Items of Note: The Blessing of Animals Join us following the 10:00 am Mass Today, October 1st as we bless our beloved companions. As autumn arrives, so too does a procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even a lama or horse, are led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Animals. St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. The story is told how he and his brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God s living things. All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures. And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi s canonization that referred to her little cat! For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return. The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love. Pope Francis - the first to boldly choose the name of Francis in honor of the revered Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology and celebrated champion of the poor - surprised everyone when he famously broke ceremonial rules by allowing Asia, a guide dog for an Italian radio journalist, into the Vatican s audience hall and issued a special blessing for her. In his first homily, the pontiff said, The vocation of being a protector... means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God s creatures and respecting the environment in which we live... In the end, everything has been entrusted to our protection, and all of us are responsible for it. Be protectors of God s gifts. In Pope Francis, one hears the echo of St. Francis of Assisi himself - to respect all life, and that it is the moral responsibility of the powerful to protect the undefended, the powerless, and the vulnerable. 2
