Eglise Sain-Lauren (vers 1830). Sepia one poscard feauring arisic rendering of he early façade wih brief hisory of he church prined a righ edge. Vinceniana Collecion, DePaul Universiy Special Collecions, Chicago, IL In 583, Gregory of Tours menioned his monasic church, begun as a chapel. I overlooked a Roman road, now he Rue du Faubourg Sain Denis. The presen church, whose choir was dedicaed in 1429, replaces an earlier one. Only he old ower remains from he welfhcenury church. The fifeenh-cenury church has been d and reconsruced several imes. During he revoluionary period, i was used as a Temple of Reason, hen a Temple of Old Age (1798). I was resored o he Caholic Church in 1802. The monasic enclosure was removed when he Boulevard Magena was pu hrough in he nineeenh cenury, and is neo- Gohic façade daes only from 1865, buil o fi he building o he new sree. A mid-nineeenh-cenury phoo of he Eglise Sain-Lauren aken by renowned French phoographer Charles Marville; and a modern day phoo of he façade. Public Domain Sain-Lauren was he parish church of Vincen de Paul from 1632 o 1660, and of Louise de Marillac from 1641 o 1660. Alhough she had requesed burial a Sain-Lazare, he pasor overrode Louise s wishes, and she was buried in he chapel of he Visiaion in his church where she came o pray and o make her Easer Communion wih he oher sisers. Her remains lay here for 95 years, unil 1755, when her body was ransferred o he moherhouse. Marking he spo is he simple wooden cross wih he words Spes Unica [ (Hail, O Cross, our) Only Hope ], from he hymn Vexilla Regis, he monumen she requesed in her will.
The wooden cross which marks he spo where Louise de Marillac was once buried; and several of he sained glass windows honoring Sain Vincen and Sain Louise. Couresy S. Vincen de Paul Image Archive Online Several modern painings and sained glass windows show Sain Vincen blessing Sain Louise and he firs Daughers of Chariy, and Sain Vincen performing works of mercy (galley convics, slaves in Algiers, ec.) A small plaque also reads: 1660. Sain Vincen de Paul, founder of he priess of he Mission and of he Sisers of Chariy, ofen visied he Church of Sain-Lauren, his parish church. Vincen de Paul Image Archive Online; Public Domain Guillaume de Lesocq (d. 1661), pasor of Sain-Lauren from 1627 o 1661, came wih Adrien Le Bon (1577?-1651), he prior of Sain-Lazare, o offer he propery of Sain- Lazare o Monsieur Vincen. Afer repeaed and lenghy discussion and discernmen, hey succeeded. Lesocq assised Louise on her deahbed and celebraed her funeral, since Vincen de Paul was ill and confined o his room. Lesocq would also send confessors from he parish o he Daughers moherhouse. A laer pasor, Nicholas Gobillon (1626-1706), revered Louise de Marillac and wroe her firs biography. To he righ of he church is a small park, he Square Sain-Lauren, which marks he sie of one secion of he parish cemeery. Many of he earlies Daughers of Chariy were buried, however, on he norh side in anoher secion opened in 1662, adjacen o he chapel where Louise herself was inerred. Their remains were removed beginning in 1804 and placed in he caacombs of Paris. This removal was occasioned by public healh concerns all hrough he ciy in he lae eigheenh and early nineeenh cenuries. During he sack of Sain-Lazare, revoluionaries burs ino is house chapel. Finding a reliquary of Sain Vincen, four of hem brough i reverenly o Sain-Lauren for safekeeping. They hen reurned o he ask a hand looing and pillaging.
