INTRODUCTION TO THE SEMINAR The seminar on The role of Religion in Promoting Peace and Harmony: Contribution of Christianity aims at promoting a culture of religion in the context of contemporary challenges. As part of a series of seminars on The Role of Religion in Promoting Peace and Communal Harmony that would look at the linkage between changing social structure in India in the light of religions (mainly the increasing individualization of the society and the complexities in social relationships amongst different faiths) and the spirit of religion among individuals. Through these seminars it is intended to invite scholars, professionals, academics and institutions who are engaged in spreading the message of peace and harmony through their writings and initiatives. Further these seminars would seek to capture trends in different religions and initiatives in India to see the emergent issues in respective communities. Another important aspect of these seminars is to look at the role of religion in promoting social cohesion, integration and mutual understanding. The scholars engagement will be on the democratic governance in the context of promoting active citizenship. 1

In the backdrop of much contention and contestation vis-à-vis the changing nature of religion, the concern of this seminar would be to look at how the mainstream religions negotiate them in the larger public discourses. Moving away from the narrow perception of religion, it is important to look at it from a broader political, sociological and community context. This is a humble initiative to deliberate on the impact of different religions particularly that of Christianity in promoting peace and communal harmony The overarching goal of the seminar, while deliberating on the above perspectives, would be to showcase the multiple religious traditions in India. It would also deliver the altruistic content of religion through the expression of the free spirit of the human being and spirituality of love. GOAL OF THE SEMINAR To deliberate and strategize the Contribution of Christianity in Promoting Peace and Communal harmony that aims to comprehensively fulfill the set objectives (given below) as envisaged in the proposed series of seminars on the Role of Religion in Promoting Peace and Harmony SEMINAR OBJECTIVES To create an environment where people will know more about how to help to prevent the spread of violence at the time of communal disturbance, and create understanding what actual role of a common man to make peace at the time of disturbance.
