St. Christina Catholic Church 111 th & Christiana, Chicago, IL 60655 First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion Handbook 2017-2018 2018 Sue Carter, CRE St. Christina Sacrament Coordinator 773-445-9539 scarter@stchristinaparish.org

Welcome First Holy Communion Class 2018 Dear Parents, At St. Christina, the Holy Communion Program is the first opportunity for our children to receive our Blessed Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Students typically receive their First Holy Communion during Second Grade, but we also welcome older children who have not yet received their First Holy Communion. Preparation involves a two-year commitment. The reason that we require a two consecutive year program is because celebrating a sacrament should involve becoming familiar and comfortable with our parish community and faith life. It includes class participation, Reconciliation, parent meetings, and attendance at Mass. A student must attend one year of class at St Christina School or through our Religious Education program, prior to the year they will be celebrating the sacrament. The first year of class participation is considered Level I Sacramental Prep. The second consecutive year of class participation involves more detailed sacramental preparation. This is referred to as Level II Sacramental Prep. Class participation is an important part of our program. Students who attend our classes have the opportunity to meet peers and share their faith, and take class visits to the church. They will also have opportunities to meet our priests, and develop relationships with their teachers and catechists. If you have any questions, please contact me at 773-445-9539 to schedule a meeting. Peace, Sue Carter Coordinator of St. Christina Religious Education

What is Holy Communion? First Holy Communion is one of the most important events in early life for a Catholic, along with Baptism, Reconciliation and Confirmation. The First Holy Communion is a sign of Christian unity and a symbol of a Catholic's faith and devotion. First Holy Communion is typically celebrated when a child is about seven years old. What is Reconciliation? Reconciliation offers grace and the remission of sin to whoever receives it, and at whatever age. However, each person's approach to Reconciliation is very different, depending on age, stage of life, and development as a person. In fact, people adapt Reconciliation to a particular milestone or stage of life rather than adapting themselves to the Sacrament Reconciliation. Assigned Mass Times for your Child FIRST HOLY COMMUNION MASS IS ON SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2018 AT 10:00 AM. Last name begins with: A-L FIRST HOLY COMMUNION MASS IS ON SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2018 AT 1:00 PM. If this time assigned to you does not work for your family, please let Sue Carter know so that she can accommodate the Mass that better fits your needs. Parent Orientation Information Sessions The first Parent Orientation meeting will be on Monday, October 30 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Christina Church. Kathryn McNicholas will explain the importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I will also explain how your child will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and appropriate dress attire. The second Parent Orientation will be held on Monday, February 19 th at 6:30 p.m. at St. Christina Church. I will explain all the details of First Holy Communion and also go over the importance of this Sacrament. We ask that one parent and the Communicant is present for these meetings.

Sacrament of Reconciliation The Reconciliation Service will take place on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at St. Christina s Church. Please choose ONE time that best fits your family s schedule. We ask that you please sign in your child as you enter the back of Church. The children and their parents will meet in the Church at the time they have chosen and we will have a communal celebration. This will include a welcoming and a reading from the bible. We will do an Examination of Conscience and say the Act of Contrition as a group. The Communicants will then go to the priest for individual confession of their sins and receive absolution. After all the children have received their First Reconciliation, each family member is encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation to be an example of their faith for their child. After you and your child have completed your penances in your pews you may leave. There will not be a formal dismissal or final song. Each child will receive a certificate of Reconciliation in class next week.

Practice the Sacrament of Reconciliation with Your Child 1. Explain to your child that Reconciliation is a Sacrament of healing in which our sins are forgiven and in which we are reconciled with God and the Church. 2. Teach your child that God is a loving merciful Father who is waiting for us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. 3. Explain that Jesus granted the apostles and their successors (priests) the authority to forgive and retain sins. 4. Teach your child how to make an examination of conscience and have them make it at the end of the day as part of their night prayers. 5. Make sure your child learns and memorizes the Act of Contrition and that they understand Reconciliation as a way of preparing their soul to receive Jesus in the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist. 6. Emphasize that the priest will never tell anyone their sins. The Act of Contrition My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His Name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

Procedure for Receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation 1. When your child is ready to receive the Sacrament, they will asked to step forward by an Usher or Teachers. Please remain in your pew until the Usher or Teacher has directed your pew. 2. Teachers will direct your child to an available Priest. Each child may request a specific Priest if they wish. 3. When each child approaches the priest, they begin with the Sign of the Cross and say, Forgive me Father for I have sinned, this is my first Reconciliation. 4. The Priest will guide them through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. 5. When the Sacrament has been received, your child will be given a simple penance, which they are asked to say in the pew. Examination of Conscience for Children 1. When I make choices, do I sometimes forget about what God wants me to do? 2. Do I pray every day? 3. Do I pay attention at Mass? 4. Do I try to see God in others? 5. Do I listen to my parents and teachers or do I ignore them? 6. Have I made fun of my brothers and sister or my classmates? 7. Am I selfish at school or do I share what I have with others? 8. When I am angry, do I say or do things to hurt whoever has hurt me? 9. Do I say, I m sorry to the person I have hurt and I forgive you to the person who has hurt me? 10. Do I play fair or do I ever cheat at school or games? 11. Have I taken something that does not belong to me?

St. Christina, Our Patroness July 24 th is the feast day of St. Christina. She was a martyr in the early Church. Her death in 300 A.D. is an example of those who selflessly gave their lives to defend the Faith and spread the message of the Gospel. Saint Christina was born around the year 290 A.D. Christianity was not only illegal and forbidden, but Christians were routinely rounded up and physically persecuted and executed. St. Christina was born in Tyro in the Tuscany region of Italy. The town was built on an island in the lake near Bolsena which has since sunk. Her father, Urban Anicii, was the Roman Prefect for the island. In today s terms, his position was a combination of governor and judge. The people of the Roman Empire worshipped many gods, much like Greek mythology. It was a way of life before Christianity took hold. Urban was an enemy to the Christians, and hardly a day passed when he did not call one of the Faithful into his presence and doom them to suffering and death. Christina was just a child but she was struck by how fearless and happy the Christians were during their torments. She was curious to know what kind of people these were and what gave them the strength to bear the sufferings they endured. Christina sought out someone who could teach her about the Christian faith. In time, she was Baptized as a Christian without her parents knowledge. Shortly after, she took her father s idols, made of gold and silver, and with the help of others, broke them into pieces and gave them to the poor. Her father was furious. At first he tried to win her over with kindness. He kept encouraging her to deny Christ and she refused. She is reported as saying: Do with me whatever you like, my dear father; you can take my life, but the faith of Christ you have no power to tear out of my heart. My Savior will strengthen me to suffer patiently all that you have threatened. Her father ordered all kinds of mean tortures for his daughter. Christina looked to heaven and thanked God for aiding her to bear the pain. Her father then threw her into a dungeon. While in the dungeon, an angel appeared to her and healed her wounds. The angel encouraged her to keep going and told her God would help her. When her father heard of her healing he sent an executioner to the prison to tie a large stone around her neck and cast her into the lake. The same angel who had visited her the day before carried her safely to shore. Her father was beside himself and sent her back to the dungeon. Her father was found dead the next morning. It is presumed he died from a stroke caused by his uncontrolled anger. Dio was Urban s replacement as Prefect. He was even more cruel towards Christians than Urban. He had Christina brought to him and ordered an iron cradle to be built and filled with boiling oil and tar. Christina was summoned and immersed in the cradle. She made the Sign of the Cross and said to the soldiers, you have reason to lay me like a child in a cradle; for it is hardly a year since I was born in Holy Baptism. She was not harmed or experienced pain.

Dio then had Christina taken to the temple of Apollo. She was told to make fitting sacrifice to Apollo. When Christina stepped into the temple, she made the Sign of the Cross and the statue of Apollo fell from the altar and was broken into a thousand pieces. The soldiers who brought Christina to the temple were terrified and released her saying, Truly the God of the Christians is the one true God. Many of those who witnessed this event became Christian. Julian replaced Dio as Prefect. He was even more ruthless. He gave Christina a choice: sacrifice to the gods or be thrown into a fiery furnace. She would not do it so they threw her in the furnace. She remained in it for five days unharmed much like the companions of Daniel in the Old Testament during their exile in Babylon. (See Daniel Chapter 3). Since that did not work, Julian had Christina taken to a cave with many vicious animals. She made the Sign of the Cross and none of the animals touched her. She sang praises to God and the animals listened. The guards, tired of her songs, cut out her tongue. She was finally tied to a pole and shot with arrows. With that, Christina went to heaven to meet God her Maker. Our patroness, St. Christina gives us an example of a loyal steadfast faith which enables us to grow in our Christian life. Like Christina, we may be called to defend our faith more on the grounds of personal convictions and style of life rather than actually laying down our life. St. Christina gives us a wonderful example of the opportunities to be generous and selfless.
