Second Sunday of Lent February 28, 2010 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? Psalm 27:1 THE HUMMEL FIGURINES. (Last in series.) Born in 1909 in a Bavarian village in southern Germany, Berta Hummel, later known as Sister Maria Innocentia, took her formal education in art at the State College for Art and Design. Shortly after graduation from there, she entered the Franciscan order and taught art at a girl s boarding school run by the sisters. Beginning in 1933, the German Nazi Party took over the nation s government. In 1935 Franz Goebel, owner of a china factory, saw Sister s drawings. After contacting with Sister Maria Innocentia and her convent, Herr Goebel began to produce the small statues of children and to distribute them both in Germany and, more lucratively, in the United States. Ironically, the Nazi regime, while allowing export, prohibited their distribution in Germany, since the government favored only the depiction of children as Hilter s Aryan Youth. The Goebel- Hummel figurines had failed to meet those official criteria. The government, eventually noting the volume of foreign sales, relented and proceeded to skim much of the profits until its fall in 1945. Poor living conditions in Germany during the war years led to Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel s contracting consumption, aggravated by pleurisy. She died on November 6, 1946 at age 37. Fr.
