SCRIPTURE REFERENCE NOTES Fellowship Bible Church Women in the Word Spiritual Warfare: terms of engagement Study Book by David Jeremiah Chapter 7 - The Helmet of Salvation Ephesians 6:15 October 28, 2014 This study has been targeting one of our three enemies. We have three enemies; the world, the flesh and the Devil. 1 John 2:15-17, Galatians 5:16-21, 1 Peter 5:8 In review -We do have Satan as one of our enemies -We are engaged in a war -The outcome is already decided -God has equipped us with armor -We are told to put it on and stand firm to keep us from getting wounded in the battle -It is by faith that we put it on We have the Belt of Truth - Jesus is the way the truth and the life. (Jn. 14:6) We have the Breastplate of Righteousness - Jesus is our righteousness. (Phil 3:9) We have the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace - Jesus is our peace. (Eph. 2:14) We have the Shield of Faith - Faith is not our own faith, it is a gift of God. (Eph. 2:8-9)

Today we are looking at the Helmet of Salvation. There are three parts to Biblical salvation. 1) We are saved from the penalty of sin - Justification 2) We are saved from the power of sin - Sanctification 3) We are saved from the future presence of sin - Glorification The armor, including the helmet, is a gift from God. We were born an enemy of God. Col. 1:21-22 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight We were all born sinners and separated from God. Rom. 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Rom. 5:12...just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned. God says that sinful people will spend eternity separated from Him. Sin must be punished because God is holy and just. Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death. God already had a plan in place before Adam was even created. 2 Tim. 1:9 He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, Christ willingly was sacrificed on the cross and endured separation from God his Father while the sins of the whole world were placed upon Him. Jn 3:16-18 For this is the way God loved the world: He give his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the wold to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. God wants everyone to know Him and the way of salvation. 1 Tim. 2:4-6 since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity,

Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God s purpose at his appointed time. A person does not spend eternity in hell separated from God because of their sin. A person spends eternity in hell because they do not accept God s provision of salvation freely offered to everyone who believes. At the moment of salvation we are given among other things, the armor needed for warfare. We can put it on, or we can just posses it, but it is ours and it cannot be taken from us. At the cross Christ said, it is finished He did a complete work. He took care of the penalty, the power and the future presence of sin in one act. We struggle with the power of sin on a daily basis, and until we are ushered into the presence of God, we will battle with it with varying failure and success as we walk the Christian life. This helmet protects the mind. Satan can easily wound a warrior by attacking the mind. When we put on the helmet of salvation we identify our sin for what it is and we lay it at the cross. In other words we draw upon the life of Christ given to us at salvation to rescue us from the reign and control of sin in our lives. Romans 6:6 We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 6:10-12 For the death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. so you too consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. 6:14 For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace. We are saved from the future presence of sin. When we do not put on the helmet, our minds are unprotected and we can become discouraged with our present circumstances. 1 Thes. 5:8-10 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

The hope of salvation is an expectant kind of hope. Hope gives you reason to push through. Like wise this hope of salvation is our deliverance. It gives us endurance in hardship. Phil. 1:18b-20 Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. My confident hope is that I will in no way be ashamed but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die. Romans 8:28 says And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. David and Saul Jesus was our perfect example. And we are to look to Jesus having hope in the same thing that He had hope in. Heb 12:2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. God knows what is best for us, and we can trust Him in the process and also in the outcome. His salvation awaits us. How about you and me? Do we continue to hope in God when a family member is treating us wrongly? Or do we come up with our own way to deal with them that is not glorifying to God? As we watch the news today do we trust God s plan when things on this earth all seem to be heading for disaster?

Do we have hope in God s best for us in a scary diagnosis from the Dr.? Or do we worry and fret and become unconsolable and irrational? Do we rejoice always because we know He is good, and our salvation (glorification) is sure? God has provided the solution for victory over the power of sin. We are set apart for God and are to walk in a manner worthy of our calling. God has given us everything we need for life and Godliness. (2 Pet. 1:3) We have the power to live the Christian life; glorifying Him through it. TO GOD BE THE GLORY
