MANKIND AND THE SON OF MAN October 23, 2017, Linda Corrigan Intro First Module:: The Creed: The Story in Miniature Who is God Scripture God is a Trinity One God, One Nature, Three Persons Creed is Trinitarian too Part 1: Father; Part 2: The Son; Part 3: The Holy Spirit Father as Creator All things invisible and visible Invisible realm beings who are purely spiritual Visible realm the world we live in Mankind as We Were Intended to Be Visible world formed and filled by God All serve the ultimate creation man or mankind Even the sabbath (Mk 2:27) Man (men and women alike) the only creation created for his own sake Not created for the sake of anything else God created everything for man (CCC 358) Man is the link between God and his creation Earthly man (earthly symbolized by the number 4) Joined to heavenly God (symbolized by the number 3) Yields 7 Seventh day God established the Sabbath Sabbath, Hebrew sheva is seven, means oath Oath implies a covenant God wants to unite mankind to himself by covenant, to make him family He (God) destined us in love to be his adopted sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will (Eph 1:5). Man, unique among visible creation because he is in the image and likeness of God Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Gen 1:26). Image and likeness: Intellect and will 1

Capable of thinking and knowing; capable of giving ourselves and loving God had the one perfect Word or thought Jesus He and Jesus exchanged a love so palpable it generated a third person Holy Spirit the result of their spiration of love Created to live in a state of holiness and justice (CCC 375) We were intended to share in the divine life; to live giving their due to all creation (justice) Adam and Eve formed to live in original holiness and justice That results in a triple harmony: 1) within self (integrity) 2) with others (communion) 3) with creation (dominion) Harmony/integrity within ourselves Not divided or at war within enlightened intellect ruling an informed will We share the world with others Need to give them their due live in communion (good relationship) Man has authority/power over the rest of the created world (dominion) have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth (Gen 1:26). To live in harmony with creation exercising responsibility and care for it Living in harmony with self (integrity), others (communion) and creations (dominion) allows for harmony with God Beings of the invisible realm also created in his image and likeness An intellect and a will, but pure spirit no body Our intellect and will housed in a body we are physical and spiritual beings Our soul We are given life (animated) by God He sustains us in every moment of our existence If God stops thinking about us, we would cease to exist The innermost aspect of us the spiritual principle by which we exist (CCC 363)/ Body and soul so closely united: our souls are the forms of our bodies (CCC365). Instilled in us by God then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Gen 2:7). God made us to perfect Creation has its own goodness and proper perfection, but it did not spring forth complete from the hands of the Creator (CCC 302) Universe created in a state of journeying (statu viae) 2

The God who created you without you, will not save you without you. (Augustine.) We are on a journey coming from blessing and moving to eternal blessing Souls will be reunited with the body at the Resurrection of the dead The memory is a part of the soul per Augustine 1 It enables us to know truth and to seek it. 2 God is truth so memory draws us back to God Being made in the image and likeness of God we can create Male and female he created them (Gen 1:27b). We are made to live in communion or intimate relationship with others As God shares an intimate relationship within the Trinity He desires us to live in an intimate relationship within that Trinity (CCC 375) Mankind Fallen The Fall or original sin Sin: an offense against truth i.e. against God Opposed to love of God A choice to separate ourselves from God Breaks or damages relationship with him and with others Destroys original justice (harmony within self, with others, with all creation and God) Sin entered the world through Satan, the devil, a fallen angel As angel, Satan was created with a free will Chose against God against God s plan Not sure why Perhaps because God s plan involved becoming an embodied creature Original sin Disobedience, lack of trust in God, pride Opposes humility acknowledging who God is, who we are in relation to God Pride a self-love, places us in competition with God, ahead of him. Satan, out of jealousy schemed to deceive Eve Made her view God and herself wrongly Made her think that God was holding back, not wanting to share his knowledge of good and evil Satan made her think that it was hers for the taking Made her feel she could BE God vs. being happy to be in his image and likeness, sharing his divine life of blessing Ironic in that she was trying to gain the knowledge and wisdom of God, but not wise at all Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom 1 http://faculty.georgetown.edu/jod/augustine/sheri Accessed 10.15.17 (See Augustine, Confessions, Book 10.6.7.8.12) 3

Said several times in Scripture (Dt 10:12; Judg16:15; Job 28:28; Ps 10:3, 19:9, 34:7,9,11, 103:11, 111:10, 119:38, 128:1, 147:11; Prov1:7, 9:10, 14:2, 15:24, 16:6; Wisd 6:17; Sir 1:12,14,18; Is 11:3; Jer 32:40) A sense of awe or reverence for the Lord (acknowledging who he is) Eve convinced Adam to do the same From then on things changed Harmony within self, with others, all creation and so with God was destroyed The effects of sin entered the world Free will A gift from God Given out of love God wants us to be respond freely, by choice (free will) to him with love God is not responsible for bad things, but allows them Love has to be a choice Adam and Eve fell for the lies of Satan: That ancient serpent, who is called the devil (Rev 12:9) What did that mean for them? The devil was right, they did not die immediately but they would Something did die in their heart They were made to be: 1) immortal (no death no longer 2) impassable (no sickness or suffering) no longer 3) integral (an enlightened intellect ruling the will) no longer (weakened by disobedience, lack of trust and pride) What does that mean for us? Adam and Eve: parents of the human race Given the gifts of original holiness and justice or all of us to pass it on to us They lost original holiness and justice for everyone As parents, they pass on to us We contract or inherit from them that sin, tendency to sin, (disobedience, failure to trust God, pride) the exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator (Rom 1:25) The Remedy God could have just blotted them out and started over That is not God His love knows no end God did not blot Adam and Eve or the Israelites that worshiped the golden calf (Ex 32:10) Sin does have consequences They exist in today s world as they always have 4

All peoples since Adam and Eve have original sin and the tendency to sin (concupiscence) (CCC 1264) We are wounded or weakened by this tendency, but not completely destroyed Sin begat sin Adam blamed Eve; Eve blamed the serpent; no one took responsibility Murder entered the world Cain and Abel Sin, deflecting responsibility took hold (CCC 401) God takes responsibility He knows the damage and he knows who is responsible He allows them (and us) to experience the consequences Eve will have to endure great pain in bringing forth life She will long to be united with her husband Adam will no longer till and keep the garden in a spirit of cooperation with God Will reap the fruits of the earth and live by the sweat of his brow The Good News That ancient serpent, the devil God will send a remedy for him This is the first good news (Greek: euangelion) I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. (Gen 3:15) There is one to come who will save us from a permanent death God had introduced life into the world, the devil had introduced death The devil has a certain hold or dominion over us, but the ultimate hold or dominion is God s (CCC 407) The Seed of Gen 3:15 is the one who is sent Jesus (God himself) God talks responsibility he takes on our sin himself He will save us God, almighty (omnipotent), all-knowing (omniscient) all-present (omnipresent) MOST OF ALL, all-loving or omnibenevolent The Son of Man And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord Second part of the Creed the Son He is the good news, the heart of all that we know, teach and share in the faith At the center of our faith is a person Jesus, the Son of Man Four ways Jesus is referred to: 1) Jesus; 2) Christ; 3) Son of God; 4) Lord Jesus The One Word which sums up all Scripture (CCC 102) We know him in Scripture God sent his Jesus so we would know him If you had known me, you would have known my Father also (Jn 14:7). Jesus says it all: Hebrew meaning is God saves 5

Like Moses Jesus accomplished an exodus to save us all from slavery to sin he took Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem (Lk 9:28-31) Israelites/Jews invoked the name of God once per year to save them from/in atonement for their sins (through the High Priest) We invoke the name of Jesus (God saves) in our prayer Jews asked for mercy at other times as well Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner (Lk 18:9-14). Source of the Jesus Prayer a way of meditating on the love and mercy of God The rosary: a meditation on the life of Jesus Includes many Hail Mary s all centered on the name of Jesus We close prayers in the name of Jesus Christ A title anointed one Priests, prophets and kings were anointed Priest: Aaron by Moses as High Priest (Ex 30:30; Lev 8:12) To intercede for the people with God, to make that annual invocation of the name of God atonement for and forgiveness of sin Prophets: And Jehu the son of Nimshi, you shall anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeolah (a bel meho lah) you shall anoint to be prophet (1 Kgs 19:16). Prophets sent by God to speak for him (telling the people what God wants them to know) Kings: Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his bothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward (1 Sam 16:13). Jesus is THE High Priest (Heb 4:14) Anointed by the Holy Spirit at his Baptism (Mk 1:10) Intercedes for us with God asking for mercy and forgiveness Jesus is THE prophet. Sent to tell us about God s love and show it Prophets often LIVED the message of God in their own lives He speaks for God For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak (Jn 12:49). All of Jesus life was doing and saying the will of the Father (Jn 6:38). Jesus is THE KING 6

The heir of David who was to sit on the throne forever (2 Sam 7:13; Ps 89:29, 132:11). Son of God David and other kings known as son of God Israelites known as sons of God Jesus is THE Son of God Revealed to Peter You are the Christ, the Son of the living God (Mt16:16). Jesus knew he was THE Son of the Father. He distinguished between God as our Father and as his Father (Mt 7:21; Mt 5:48, 6:6) go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father (Jn 20:17). Lord The name God gave himself I am who I am (Ex 3:14) In Hebrew YHWH Hebrews would not pronounce it Used the word LORD (Greek: Kyrios) Jesus used the phrase I am to identify himself Seven times in the Gospel of John: 1) 6:35 the bread of life; 2) 8:12 and 9:5 the light of the world; 3) 10:7 the door; 4) 10:11,14 the Good Shepherd; 5) 11:25 the resurrection and the life; 6) 14:6 the way and the truth and the life; 7) 15:1 - the true vine Showing he was truly one with the Father or LORD The Son of Man and The Sons of Men Jesus often referred to himself as the son of man Daniel s vison: There came one like a son of man and to him was given dominion and glory and kingdom (Dn 7:13a,14a). Jesus was also fully human a son mankind, born of a woman Jesus is the fullest revelation to man of who God is Jesus is also the fullest revelation to man of who we should be Came to make of us ADOPTED sons of the Father. God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons (Gal 4:4b-5). Jesus is the first-born born from the Father before all ages With the Father he is an eternal being (always was, is and will be) We are sons of men Jesus desires to be family with us the siblings he wants to bring to the Father That they may all be one, even as you Father are in me and I in you (Jn 17:21). The Father sent Jesus, Son of God and son of man, to bring us into a new and eternal covenant making us his family 7

God wants to adopt us AND return us to the state we were intended to live in as sons of God. he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature (2 Ptr 1:4). Always God s plan for us: to be in his image and likeness and in his nature In perfect justice and holiness Be perfect as my heavenly Father is perfect (Mt 5:48). As sons, we are to inherit the kingdom We are to be priest, prophet and king (by the power of the Holy Spirit at our baptism) We are anointed, too The beginning of the remedy for us In baptism original sin is removed from our souls We are enlightened to better understand/respond to God, his graces To be restored to the original holiness and justice (harmony within, with others, with all creation, with God) We still suffer the effects of sin a wound that never quite heals until we come face to face with God In the meantime, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint for God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (Rom 5:3-5) Closing Psalm 8 a vision for mankind and how we are able to come to this vision through the Son of Man. 8
