NEW MASS TIMES Beginning Sunday, October 6, 2013, the Sunday Mass schedule will be 7:00am, 9:00am Children and Family Mass, and 11:00am High Mass. No change to Vigil Mass. Along with a small adjustment to Mass times there will also be some mild changes to how Mass will be celebrated especially the 7:00am and the 11:00am High Mass, the latter celebrated ad orientem for Liturgy of the Eucharist only. More will be presented on this in upcoming editions of the bulletin. All Masses should have music and Mass parts are to be sung or chanted by all in the worshipping Assembly. In the event that Mass will be celebrated sans music, it is still necessary that full, conscious and active participation on the part of the laity be present at all times, which means that all prayers and responses by the people are to be prayerfully and audibly prayed as outlined in the Pew Cards. Please use them. In Articles 1157 and 1158 respectively in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is noted: Song and music fulfill their function as signs in a manner all the more significant when they are "more closely connected... with the liturgical action," 22 according to three principal criteria: beauty expressive of prayer, the unanimous participation of the assembly at the designated moments, and the solemn character of the celebration. In this way they participate in the purpose of the liturgical words and actions: the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful: 23 The harmony of signs (song, music, words, and actions) is all the more expressive and fruitful when expressed in the cultural richness of the People of God who celebrate. 25 Hence "religious singing by the faithful is to be intelligently fostered so that in devotions and sacred exercises as well as in liturgical services," in conformity with the Church's norms, "the voices of the faithful may be heard." But "the texts intended to be sung must always be in conformity with Catholic doctrine. Indeed they should be drawn chiefly from the Sacred Scripture and from liturgical sources." 26 The days of cafeteria-style Catholicism and hurry in and hurry out are gone at least here at St. Martin de Porres Roman Catholic Church! Each Mass will be a true Eucharistic Celebration whereby we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life (CCC, 1326). And each and every Mass, allowing for prescribed silence and meditation along with singing, should be at least a full hour from Procession to Recession. It is necessary for me to comment here again that to leave Holy Mass right after reception of Holy Communion is both wrong and irreverent and if blatantly and repeatedly done can also be sinful. While recognizing there may be the occasional situation that may necessitate this decision or that someone may need to leave prompted by duty to an ill loved one or one s profession, it is inconceivable that so many people week in and week out have this imminent need. I ask that you please bring this to prayer and ask that God s Spirit of All- Truth alight upon your mind, heart and soul as you search within for what may remain as an obstacle to Grace! It is always the attitude and motive behind our choices and decisions that God cares most about thus will we be held accountable and liable to judgment. Remember the First and Greatest Commandment: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and with all your strength! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU! FR. JAMES

Prayer to Avert Hurricanes God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

Groveling in the Dust Contemplating the joy of faith, I found myself thinking about the many ways in which the word joy is used in contemporary language. Colloquial use may cause a misunderstanding of true joy. The word Joy is often associated with something pleasing to the senses. Joy can be a tasty chocolate covered coconut and almond candy, or a product to make dishes squeaky clean. It can be the name of someone you know, or a description of the way someone makes you feel. It can be a word prominently displayed in Christmas decoration, or a thoughtful wish expressed to someone during the holiday season. But for me, the joy of faith is not always so superficially delicious, delightful or quite so squeaky clean. Reading an old prayer, I was drawn to a particular segment; words that helped me put the joy of faith in a better light: Faith casts my anchor upwards where I trust in thee and engage thee to be my Lord. Be pleased to live and move within me, breathing in my prayers, inhabiting my praises, speaking in my words, moving in my actions, living in my life, causing my to grow in grace. Thy bounteous goodness has helped me believe, but my faith is weak and wavering, its light dim, its steps tottering, its increase slow, its backslidings frequent; it should scale the heavens, but lies groveling in the dust. Groveling in the dust are not the words most of us would use in connection with the joy of faith. But the absence of weakness and wavering, dim light, steps tottering, frequent backslides and, yes, some hardy groveling, could indicate that I m not engaging myself fully. A recent article in a Catholic newspaper quoted Pope Francis using the term decorative faith. He warned against using faith simply to make oneself appear to be a good person. The Pope reinforced the need to live our faith. Like any pursuit in life... career, marriage, parenting, art, sports... success never happens without failure along the way; the greatest heights require enduring persistence that involves stumbling amidst the progress. The greatest joy that comes from faith is found not only in the moments when we do our best, but in the moments when we fail, placing all trust and hope in Jesus. To stand tall in a moment of holiness is incredibly wonderful; to be lifted by Jesus when we fall is amazing grace. Perhaps true joy embraces the entire richness of our journey as sinners groveling to become saints accompanied by a Lord who stands in waiting to lift us from the dust, knowing we cannot scale the heavens on our own. EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Shake off the dust and keep climbing, trusting that Jesus will never let go. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions for EVANGELISM IN ACTION to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith Thompson at 772-631-2080.

September 25-November 3. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their neighborhoods, friends and families. A desire to cooperate with God in carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America. The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection. It s clear that God sees the transformative value of His people in meeting a 40-day challenge. 40 Days uses a 3-pronged effort: Can't you spend 1 hour with me? *Prayer and fasting: Christ told us that some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God's will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God's help. Fasting is not a Christian diet; it is a form of physical prayer. You can fast from food, TV, alcohol... anything that separates you from God. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? *Constant vigil: The most visible component of 40 Days for Life is a constant prayer vigil outside Planned Parenthood It is a peaceful, prayerful, safe witness to the clinic's patients and staff, and to the entire community, that evil is in our midst and with God's help, it will be defeated. We need people to sign up for WEDNESDAYS 3-5 and FRIDAYS 8-10 Emerald Plaza US Route 1.
