From the Pastor s Pen Keyboard Can Christmas still change the world? I remember as a little boy getting so excited about helping my family decorate the house for Christmas! After sharing the Thanksgiving holiday with my aunt and uncle and all their family, we would return home and the next day begin getting things ready. I so wanted to put up the Christmas tree immediately, but we first had to make space for the seasonal additions to the living room. After rearranging how things had been for the past eleven months, we pulled the boxes out of the attic and the stairwell and began the process of preparing for Christmas. Precious ornaments that belonged to family members generations ago were unpacked and with them precious memories of those we love and moments we shared. The stories associated with each Christmas treasure we told once again, even though we had heard the story every year so many times before, and it made the memories and the people come to life. The lights were strung outside on the evergreen bushes and fir trees, whether there was snow or not, and candles filled the windows with a soft colored glow. I ll always remember the special Bethlehem cityscape candle holder in which a single votive would be placed, the flame casting light through the window holes and shining fully through the place for the Star. I would look at this candle every night, and I couldn t wait for the time to come! And then there was the church. Being in a minister s family meant decorating the church, too. Boxes would be pulled, decorations unwrapped, stories told, memories shared, God s house prepared... In every church I ve served, the time of preparation for Christmas has been so special and exciting for everyone. People would rearrange their schedules and make room in their lives to be a part of all the goings-on of the season. It really meant something to them, and they wanted to share that sense of deep meaning and importance with others. From Sunday School parties to caroling with the choir, clothes and canned food drives, special church dinners and outings, and worship services that were unique from the rest of the year, preparing for Christmas was worth all the extra hassle and hustle and bustle. We are once gain getting ready to celebrate the coming of the promised Christ. Sunday, November 30, marks the beginning of the season of Advent when we let every heart prepare him room. Like our own homes and like our church, we have to make some space in our lives so that there is room to celebrate. We have to rearrange how we do things and when we do things, and we have to reexamine why we do things. We have to once gain approach the gift of Christ with wonder and astonishment that God would love us and come to us in such humility and vulnerability, to share with us in our humanity and bring us hope. If you knew that God was giving you a gift on Christmas Day, what would you do to get ready to receive it? How would you prepare your heart and mind and soul to fully be a part of it? Christmas Giving and Outreach Opportunities at FCC Every year during the Christmas Season, we will look for opportunities to give and help others in need. There are many different ways to give during this season. Giving of our time and talents to help others is one of the best things you can do for others. We encourage you to look for ways to spend less and give more this season. Visit our FCC Sparkle Tree Christmas is the season of giving and at First Christian Church we want to celebrate by giving gifts of ourselves. You might remember the Sparkle Tree from last year. We hope that this year we can embrace this idea even more and give more gifts of our time and our talents. The Sparkle Tree will be filled with ideas of gifts that we can give of ourselves...or better yet, create your own! The gifts we give of ourselves are the gifts that we give Jesus. Please be on the lookout for our Sparkle Tree! It will be put up during our Deck the Halls event at church on November 23. Underneath, will be our Sparkle Box. Throughout the Christmas season, we encourage you to pick a star from the tree and fulfill what is written. Gifts of your time and talents might include helping a neighbor, volunteering at the Day Center for the Homeless or our Homebuilders Food Pantry, giving a donation of food, or anything else that helps others! You can also come up with your own ideas and write them down on a piece of paper. Then, put your star or piece of paper in our church Sparkle Box underneath the Sparkle Tree or in your own Sparkle Box. After Christmas, we will open our church Sparkle Box, as well as ask everyone to bring their Sparkle Box so that we might read the many gifts which have been given in honor of Jesus birthday. Let s all join together and give the best gifts of all. let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NIV) Page 5
The sparkle box idea was inspired by the book, The Sparkle Box, by Jill Hardie. All will have the opportunity to make their own Sparkle Box at the Advent Festival on December 13. All Children, young and young at heart, will be encouraged to make a Sparkle Box and fill it with their gifts for Jesus! Board Games and Books for Families While big shiny packages cause children s eyes to sparkle, the gift of family time together lasts forever. This Christmas, we are encouraging families to spend time together playing games and reading books together. To promote this, if you would like, the congregation has the opportunity to bring games and books, of all types and for all ages, toddler to teen to church. These will be wrapped and given to local families to encourage the practice of a game or Family Night. Now doesn t this sound fun? There will be a box in the main street foyer to collect these items. Thank you in advance for your gift to these families. It is the season of giving: of our time, our talent, and our treasure. Thank you for all your giving this season! It s beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas! Deck The Halls With Poinsettias! You can help brighten our worship spaces this Advent by purchasing poinsettias; each plant is $15.00 and may be either donated for delivery to home-centered members on Sunday, December 21, or you may pick it up Christmas Eve after the 11:00 service to adorn your home for the Twelve Days of Christmas. Look for the order forms at the front desk, in Sunday school rooms, or in the business office. Thank you for making the season bright! Brrrrr!!! Winter has arrived and many of our homeless are without coats and blankets. If you have any coats, warm sweaters, sweatshirts, stocking hats or gloves that you could share with those who are less fortunate, know that they would truly be appreciated. Next time you are dashing from your car to the store and you get a little chill, remember those who are not only unable to go to the store but also have nothing to keep them warm. How cold would you want to be? Also, please bring any blankets that you no longer need so we can share with others. Church Children & Families Share Tables at Thanksgiving Meal with Adopted Grandparents! Newly Adopted children and their families came to Worship (inspite of our early snowfall) and joined in our annual Thanksgiving Meal. So nice to see not only the Adopted Children connect with their Adopted Church Grandparents, Pen Pal Friends and Mentors but the parents too were able to meet and visit with church members who are invested in their children through prayer and personal relationship. It was such a joy to have 8 visiting families worship with their children all on the same day! OperatiOn Christmas Child Thank you to all who helped support the Operation Christmas Child. The youth, due to your generous donations, were able to pack 35 plastic shoeboxes to help make a difference in the lives of children around the world. When I dropped off our Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes on Monday, November 17, 2014 I learned that our mission work would be going to certain areas of the world this year. Our shoes boxes could end up as far away as Peru and Macedonia! Thank you for your generous support of the November mission project of the FCC Tulsa youth group. Please keep our shoeboxes and the children who will be receiving them in your prayers in the coming year. Homebuilders Food Pantry Open House Sunday, November 23, between 10:00 am -12:30 pm. Drop by and enjoy a cup of hot cider and a mini-muffin as you tour and learn more about FCC s Food Pantry which is located in the former Homebuilders Classroom, on the first floor. Hosted by the Outreach Team Wasn t it fun to all be together in church? It was so nice having the kids there, too. My two daughters and I went to a wedding at FCC in Ft. Worth last weekend. It was a happy one that you could feel it was going to last! The reception was at the Stockman s Club at the Stockyards. Let me tell you, that is a happenin place. Getting to go somewhere with my two daughters just made it perfect! Sandra Lewis has asked for coats and blankets for the Homeless. We give them out with the snack packs to On the Wilder Side Blue Christmas A reflective and empowering service for those grieving a loss recent or long-lasting and dealing with all that means for this usually festive time. Harvard Avenue Christian Church 5506 South Harvard December 7 6:00 pm anyone who needs them. My most exciting news is Garth Brooks sold 111,000 tickets to seven concerts, and I got eight of them!! I had to miss Town Hall and stay home and dial the phone a bazillion times, but it only took 45 minutes. (Seventeen years ago we had to stand in line for hours!) Eight was the limit and that is just what I needed to fill my family Christmas List! If you remember, three years ago for Christmas, my grandson got me an 8x10 autographed picture of Garth, so I just put it back outside my door! I bought my cute Jazz shirt and two tickets to Jazz to the World. Have you bought yours? Get er done!!
