YOUTH-HOSTED CHILI COOK OFF IS OCT 27... 2 October 2013 MEET MH YOUTH LEADER ROBBI FREDERIKSEN!... 3 MH HARVEST FESTIVAL COMING UP!... 4 Two Churches One Gospel A NEWSLETTER FOR TWO PILGRIM CONGREGATIONS DOING OUR BEST TO FOLLOW JESUS IN A SPIRIT OF LOVE, JOY AND PEACE A Few Thoughts From Pastor Steve A few weeks ago I got an email from a good friend and mentor of mine. Ron is a newly-retired Episcopal priest who was for several years a kind of spiritual guide for me someone who helped me listen for the voice of God in the cacophony of other voices that filled my life. Ron is not only wise and insightful, he s also very creative. In the email I received Ron included a simple little guide for prayer and reflection that he s been working on. One part of the guide showed a sketch of a cafetière à piston a French Coffee Press, and next to the drawing was this little poem: Brewed: when the grounds of my being are pressed through the living water bubbling up, I taste my true flavor! There are lots of ways that we can be pressed in life. Sometimes being pressed can be hurtful or destructive or exhausting, and other times it can bring forth unexpected creativity or joy. Jesus was pressed constantly. He was pressed by his friends for wisdom and insights. He was pressed by those desperate for love and forgiveness and healing and bread. As a boy he was pressed by his parents for answers: Why did you wander off from us and scare us half to death!? Jesus was also pressed by Satan in the wilderness after his baptism, and by scribes and Pharisees and other religious authorities who demanded explanations from him and accountability for his scandalous behavior. He was pressed by crowds who wanted more from him, by a synagogue full of angry people who wanted him punished, and by a soulless politician named Pilate who just wanted to be left alone. Jesus was pressed by his Father in a dark and comfortless garden, and pressed on a cross by a dark and deluded world. And underneath the drawing and the poem were these two simple questions: When are the times in your life when you felt pressed? How would you describe your true flavor? A few days after I received this from my friend, I sat down for coffee with another friend. When I arrived at the coffee house, my other friend had ordered his coffee in a French Coffee Press, and immediately I was reminded of the image, poem and questions I had just received in the email. What, after all of this pressing, was Jesus true flavor? Life. Love. Resurrection. Easter How are you being pressed? What is coming out? What is your true flavor? How does your flavor change when the water you re immersed in for brewing is the cool, pure living water of Christ instead of the poisoned and murky water of fear, suspicion, and hard-heartedness? I ve been asking myself these questions quite a bit lately.

Robbie has many "jobs" to balance in his life as he adds us to his list. He is the Director of Children's and Youth Ministries at the Fremont UMC in Portland and he is the Portland Regional Coordinator and Site Director for the Sierra Service Project. The future is now! Kelly and Connie will continue as Youth Directors and will host youth group meetings and activities at least once a month, typically on Sundays. Robbie, our Youth Group Leader, will host the youth once a month on Fridays beginning October 18th from 6 to 8 (supper included). We will coordinate as a team so that our efforts are seamless and supportive of an enriched and fantastically fun youth group! Come share youth group with Robbie on Friday October 18th (6-8pm) at Mt Home UMC. All youth 6th - 12th grade are invited to attend. We encourage youth from both churches to attend. We hope to plan an activity that connect Mt Home UMC Youth with Fremont UMC Youth - Robbie has two great groups he leads and getting together sounds like a very fun. Hello Mountain Home UMC! My name is Robbie Frederiksen and I am so excited to be joining the incredible youth ministry team here at Mountain Home! In meeting with members of your leadership teams, I am confident that God is working through the amazing work that this church is doing. I would like to introduce myself briefly to give you an idea of where I am coming from in my life. I am 24 years old and I grew up on the Central Coast of California with my two older sisters, wonderful parents, and fantastically crazy chocolate lab. I moved to Portland, Oregon in 2009 in hopes of furthering my education and to see what different parts of our country have to offer. I am in the final semester of my junior year at George Fox University. Currently I am working on obtaining my bachelors degree in Christian Ministries with a double emphasis in Youth Ministry and Church Recreation. For the last 2 years I have been working as the Director of Children and Youth Ministries for Fremont United Methodist Church in NE Portland. Through this position, I have been offered the ability to explore my calling into ministry and just this past Spring I began the candidacy process for ordination with the United Methodist Church. In addition to working with Fremont UMC, I also hold a position with the Sierra Service Project in organizing youth and young adult service trips around the west coast. For the last 6 summers I have worked with 5 different Native American reservations and I currently work on organizing trips here in Portland and Vernonia. I am very excited to be here and I look forward to getting to know this congregation better! Warmly, Robbie Frederiksen Youth Leader Mountain Home UMC/Fremont UMC rafrederiksen@yahoo.com (805) 264-3375
