First we will see the ayah of surah ahzab: pg. 1

Whenever we will start with new wife of Prophet صلى هللا عليه وسلم, we will read these ayahs again. It shows that the wives of Prophet.صلى هللا عليه وسلم chose the hereafter and Prophet didn t choose the worldly life but they صلى هللا عليه وسلم Today, we will talk about Sawda bintu zam a (Radi Allahu anha), the second wife of the Prophet Muhammad هللا عليه وسلم.صلى Her first husband was As-saran ibnu amru and she had five children with him. Both of them accepted Islam, and they are from early reverts. As disbelievers صلى in makkah were oppressing the Muslims and their oppression was getting severe. So nabi instructed the Muslims to migrate to Habasha. As Habasha wasn t under the هللا عليه وسلم influence of Quraysh, and their king was from the people of Book. pg. 2

So, Sawda bint Zama and her husband migrated to Habasha but they were longing for their own home country. And after sometime came the news to them that disbelievers became Muslims, and it was rumor. The rumor was based on the incident, when Prophet صلى هللا عليه وسلم recited surah Najm to the people of Quraysh, and there is sajda at the end of the surah. The disbelievers couldn t resist and they did sajda at the end, because the ayahs were overwhelming. So Sawda and her husband came back to makkah and the journey was very harsh. When they came back, they realized that the news is false. The husband and wife were above Fifty and due to the harsh environment of the journey, the husband became ill. When they reached to makkah, he passed away. So sawada radi Allahu anha became a widow. As nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم also became a widow at that time, and he had two daughters to take care of, Fatima and umm khulthoom, the other daughters were married. He was sad, but at this time no one had the courage to come to nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم and tell him to marry. صلى So khawla bint hakeem was a match-maker and she had the courage to come to Prophet was صلى هللا عليه وسلم, and she suggested him to marry. So this shows that Prophet هللا عليه وسلم never behind women. صلى هللا عليه said why don t you marry. Nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم Khawla bint hakeem to Prophet said, who, ya khawla. She said, you want a widow or divorce or un-married woman. He وسلم said, who is the one not married. She said she is the daughter of most beloved friend of yours, Ayesha binti abi bakr. He said, who is the one married prior? She said, Sawda. He said who is sawda? She said, She is the one who believed in you. We need to stop here and ponder, sawda bintu zamah was a huge women, and average looking and not beautiful. But she had very good sense of humor. Nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم didn t look at all of these things and didn t even ask about it. What made him look into this proposal that she believed in him, and she is a widow. So khawla bintu hakeem went to sawda bintu zamah. Sawda radi Allahu anha, she never thought that he صلى هللا عليه وسلم will marry her. When they were in Habasha, she and her late husband wanted to come to makkah and look at Prophet هللا عليه وسل.صلى So sawda couldn t believe that Nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم proposed to her. So sawda said to khawla that you ask my father. Although, she was very old. So, khawla went to the father, although the father was mushrik and still she respected him. And the father accepted the proposal and then both agreed and the marriage took place. Sawda bintu zamah then moved to the house of nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم, and she use to give him support and take care of the household. The Quraysh and the people were very surprised with pg. 3

the marriage of sawda, as Khadija was from good lineage and very beautiful. So this shows, he wasn t a man of desire, and this shows that age doesn t matter. Sawda bintu صلى هللا عليه وسلم zamah and Prophet صلى هللا عليه وسل were of same age. This shows that it is not about the family, money or beauty but the belief (emaan). It is about being good wife, and to support the husband. صلى هللا Sawda bintu zamah was known for her sense of humor, when she use to see prophet صلى هللا عليه وسلم sad, she use to make joke and make him laugh. Even one time, Nabi عليه وسلم was praying, and she was behind him praying. When nabi she began laughing. And he prayer, finished the صلى هللا عليه وسلم asked her, why are you laughing?. She said you صلى هللا عليه وسلم were praying for so long that I could feel the blood forming in my nose due to prolonged ruku. And he صلى هللا عليه وسلم after hearing it also laughed. Sawda bintu zamah, she was the only wife for three years.when nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم migrated to medinah, later sawdah bintu zamah with the daughters of prophet صلى هللا عليه وسلم migrated to medinah. When he صلى هللا عليه وسلم came to new house in medinah, he married Ayesha radi Allahu anha. She welcomed Ayesha radi Allahu anha, especially when she saw Ayesha is so young and she taught her, what nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم likes and dislikes. So imagine, the heart of sawdah, and her love and respect for nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم. She was very peaceful and she صلى هللا عليه وسلم never made any problem. For her, it was enough that she was the wife of nabi and that s the reason, all the wives of prophet never had problem with her. When she got older, nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم had 9 wives at one time. He was fair with all of them and he use to spend one day with every wife. But sawda bintu zamah felt like she is old, she.صلى هللا عليه وسلم isn t that interesting for nabi So many people thought, nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم will divorce her but nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم never even thought of divorcing her. Because she had those feelings; and she thought, it is a burden pg. 4

on nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم to come to her.so she went to prophet صلى هللا عليه وسلم and sacrificed her day. She gave her day to Ayesha radi allahu anha, she knew that nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم loved صلى هللا عليه Ayesha radi Allahu anha the most among all wives. Even if she was saying to nabi that I am not into intimate relation between husband and wife, and it is enough for me to وسلم see you and to be your wife in duniya and akhirah. So the above ayah of surah nisah was revealed. So, this shows sawda bintu zamah wasn t into this duniya, and she had such good heart. Of course, nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم didn t divorce her or leave her. And Ayesha radi Allahu anha was very loyal to sawda bintu zamah and she always remembered her. They had very good relationship with each other. Before, the wife of nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم use to go out with their hair covered but their faces were not veiled. So Umar radi Allahu anhu came to Prophet صلى هللا عليه وسلم, and said that why don t you tell your wives to cover their face. So Allah sent the ayah agreeing with umar ibn khattab. So the command came and the wives of nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم followed this ayah. Sawda bintu zamah also use to cover her face. Once she went outside with face vieled. And umar bint khattab saw her and recognized her. He radi Allahu anhu said, you are sawdah; I recognized you, so you need to cover more. Anyway, she came to nabi صلى هللا عليه وسلم and mentioned the incident of umar radi Allahu anhu to him. Then jibreel aley his salam came with the command that Allah gave you permission to go out, but when there is a need for it. And the ayah was revealed: pg. 5

The command came to talk to men also behind curtain, if there is a need. She lived till the khilafa of umar bint khattab..صلى هللا عليه وسلم This shows that we have a lesson to learn from every wife of the Prophet pg. 6
