LESSON 4 LHM GUATEMALA Curriculum

LHM GUATEMALA Lesson 4 The Religion of Guatemala The Religion of Guatemala Guatemala officially is Roman Catholic. Spanish conquerors forced native Indians to convert, but Europeans found it difficult to supply the Guatemalans with an adequate number of priests. Consequently, many Guatemalans worship by combining traditional Indian customs and traditions with practices of the Catholic church. It is not unusual to see a person leave a church building and immediately burn incense to an ancient god. Many do not know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. God has given us an opportunity to reach out to them with our gifts and abundance. LHM GUATEMALA, CAMBODIA, LESSON 41

Lesson 3 Lesson Plan Who Loves Guatemala? (cont.) LESSON PLAN DETAILS PRE-K/GRADE 4 GRADES 5-8 God wants all children everybody in the world to live with Him forever in heaven. We are thankful to Him for our Savior Jesus who died for us. Jesus did not stay dead, but He became alive. In our baptism, God made us part of His family. We will all be with Him in heaven. (See John 14:6) There are many places in Guatemala where you can see things from long ago. The dinosaurs are extinct. The Mayan cities and their temples are ruins. The Spanish castle has been abandoned. God has promised to always be with us. He will not leave us. Today you will finish connecting the pieces of the map of Guatemala. Glue the third piece to the rest of the map before the session and the children can just add the pictures. Say, Some interesting things are in Guatemala. In Guatemala you can see places from long ago. Many fossils of many kinds of dinosaurs have been found in Guatemala. There is a museum where you can see many skeletons. Say, There are many interesting animals in Guatemala. There are monkeys, alligators, snakes, and many kinds of beautiful birds. One interesting creature is a spider that can eat a bird! Distribute copies of the blackline master. The children may draw themselves in Miguel the Cochero s horse cart. Read the clues to them to complete the picture. They may color the picture. Words for the day dinosaurio (dinosaur) araña (spider) castillo (castle) descubrir (discover) 2. Students will be able to make a dinosaur by drawing skin and body shape over a skeleton. They may also color a quetzal and brainstorm ideas for uses of a two foot feather. As students work, encourage them to appreciate God s creative genius as He formed all creatures on the earth and in the sky and waters. Encourage students to discuss what animals and plants they feel are particularly interesting. What might Guatemalan children find interesting about a visit to North America? If sugar cubes or other building materials are available, divide them between groups or teams and have some fun building contests. Each contest consists of one minute to build. Teams must stop on the signal. Who can build the tallest structure? The strongest? (Put weights on to test.) The most windows? The most unique? CLOSING PRAYER Connect your hands in a prayer circle and pray this prayer: Dear Jesus, You love us all of the time. You love the children in Guatemala all of the time. Thank you, Jesus, for your love. Amen. Dear God, Your creation is awesome. We thank You for special things like huge spiders, beautiful birds, and dinosaurs. Help us to do our part to take care of Your world, and make us good witnesses of You to others around us. Thank you for the love you shared with us through Jesus. Amen. LHM GUATEMALA, LESSON 4

If we could take a ride in my cart through Guatemala, we would see many beautiful things. We would see banana plantations and farms covering the hillsides. We would see mountains full of minerals like copper, zinc, and lead. Guatemala is also filled with beautiful people people that God made and loves. God has blessed Guatemala with many things.
