THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CROSS IN THE LITURGY W LITURGII The cross is the sign of our salvation. It is the principal symbol of Christianity, it expresses the Church and faith. Each baptized person is called to follow Christ on the way of the cross. The cross bearer prepares himself for this ministry by meditating on this sign on the basis of the Bible and mystic texts.
G E N E R A L R U L E S All liturgical servers should: remember that they participate in the mystery and lead others to it prepare themselves for their functions by praying, reflecting upon their actions, taking part in the rehearsal of the liturgy team prepare all needed things before the celebration and after it bring everything back to the sacristy (or leave it in a proper place in the sanctuary)
COOPERATES WITH the master of ceremonies, who gives detailed instructions on the ministry the sacristan, who prepares necessary liturgical items the thurifer and the boat bearer (at the entrance procession) and candle bearers (at the entrance procession and procession to the sacristy)
MINISTRY AT THE LITURGY In the sacristy the cross should be placed on the stand, not be leaned against the wall. If the processional cross is the only one cross in the sanctuary, it must have the figure of Christ crucified upon it (GIRM 308). The cross should be carried with dignity: with both hands, with the figure of Christ directed to the front. In processions the cross bearer goes between the candle bearers, and if the passage is narrow the candle bearers precede the cross bearer. If the thurible is used in the entrance procession, the thurifer and the boat bearer go at the head of the procession. As he approaches the altar, the cross bearer does not genuflect, but makes the bow of the head (usually together with the candle bearers), then he sets the cross in the appropriate place.
PROCESSION ORDER AND TAKING SEATS BY THE SERVERS The next few pages show schemes of processions orders and taking seats by the servers (there is also a separate presentation containing the following schemes). The schemes present general situations places may differ depending on the number of the faithful and concelebrants. However, this general rule should be observed each server takes his seat near the place of his function. All schemes provide for places for MB and CrB they apply to celebrations presided by the bishop.

Grant me the grace of carrying the cross in liturgical processions worthily, and grant all the faithful gathered at the liturgy the gift of following Christ who carries the cross. Teach us to bear one another s burdens. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for calling me to carry the cross in liturgical processions. Let me stand by the cross of Christ and be His witness among brothers.
CORPORATE PRAYERS OF ALL SERVERS B E F O R E A N D A F T E R T H E L I T U R G Y The priest celebrant leads prayers of the liturgy team serving within the sanctuary in the sacristy. I am about to approach the altar of the Lord, approach God who cheers my youth. I begin the sacred ministry and I want to fulfill it well. Please, Lord Jesus, grant me the grace of focusing my thoughts on You, my eyes on the altar, and let my heart be committed only to You. Amen. O God, whose kindness called me to serve You, as I am now sanctified by participation in Your mysteries, please, let me walk only on the path of salvation, today and all my life, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
