During four dedicated hours to God, our time together will include the following: Sharing Morning Prayer and meditation Learning several approaches for cultivating stillness and quieting the mind Discovering the different types of prayer and piety in the life of Christ Discussing the true meaning of Lent and how to keep it holy Spending dedicated individual quiet time in stillness, reflection, and prayer Enjoying a light lunch of fellowship Closing with a contemplative Eucharist Inside this Issue Pg. 3 Men s Club Dinner/Meeting 2/23 Pg. 3 Children s Musical on 3/2 Pg. 3 59 & Holding March program Pg. 4 Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Pg. 4 Ash Wednesday services Pg. 5 Holy Baptism Pg. 6 Feast of St. David celebration 3/1 Pg. 7 Healing Prayer Ministry Pg. 8 New Member Reception photos Evensong on Feb. 23 Everyone is cordially invited to attend Evensong, sung by the St. David s Choir on Sunday evening, February 23 at 5:00 pm. NFCC FOOD PANTRY SHOPPING LIST March Shopping List North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) serves our neighbors in need through the food pantry, thrift store and through financial assistance. St. David's has a long and strong history of supporting our neighbors through NFCC. We are a founding organization and many of our parishioners volunteer at NFCC and have served on the Board of Directors. The Food Pantry is named in memory of our Rector Emeritus, The Rev Hendree Harrison. Members of St. David's are asked to contribute food throughout the year to help stock the needs of the food pantry. The need is growing and ongoing. Throughout the year, we will be highlighting most needed items just to keep you aware of the continuing need and to ask you to buy an extra item or two each time you shop. If we all do this, we will make a huge difference in the needs of our less fortunate neighbors. An item often requested and seldom given is juice REAL juice, not 10% juice or Kool-Aid or sports drinks, but REAL juice. This month won t you add juice to your list and bring it to church? It could be the larger bottles (not the HUGE ones) or individual ones or juice boxes, whatever you can afford or is the best deal at your grocery store! Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper & Parade! Tuesday, March 4 5:00 7:00 p.m., Jeffords Hall Meal cost: $4/adult, $1/child (no reservations needed just come) Children: bring your decorated wagon or tricycle or scooter to be in the Parade which starts at 6:30 p.m.! HOLY BAPTISMS One of the great joys of parish life comes when we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Baptism. In the Episcopal Church we offer this sacrament to people of all ages. If you are interested in having your child or yourself baptized, please fill out a form by following the steps below. Once the form has been filled out, you will be contacted by Sarah McVay, Assistant to the Rector for Infant and Toddler Care (sarah@stdavidchurch.org). You are also invited to speak to Ken or Anne Elizabeth. Go to St. David s website: www.stdavidchurch.org Go to the Worship tab and click on Baptism Fill out the Baptism Request Form on that page. Staff member Sarah McVay will receive this information and be in touch with you. Below are frequently asked questions when planning a baptism: Q: Do I choose the service at which I want my child to be baptized? A: Yes, families choose the service at which they want their child to be baptized. Most people choose the 9:00 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. services. In the case when a private baptism is requested, the priests will work with you about time and place. Q: How long in advance should we notify the Church about the date we ve chosen for baptism? A: You should notify the Church as early as possible. We like to prepare at least 3-4 weeks in advance because many ministries need to be notified, including the Altar Guild, the church office and the Guild of the Christ Child who will make the banner for every baptized person. Q: What is the Baptismal Instruction and what does it entail? A: The Baptismal Instruction is a brief meeting with clergy prior to the baptism on what is to be expected during the Baptismal Service. The meeting takes place in the Church to review the liturgy, the timing of when the families come into the sanctuary (inside the altar rail), photographs, certificates, banners and other details. The meeting typically takes place on the Saturday before the baptism at 11:00 a.m., but that is subject to change depending on the availability of the priests. Both parents and godparents are asked to attend. Children are welcome. Q: What is our role as parents in Holy Baptism? A: The role as parents is as written in the liturgy of Baptism. Parents agree to be responsible for seeing that the child they present will be brought up in the Christian faith and life. (BCP, p. 302) Q: What is the role of Godparents in Holy Baptism? A: Godparents are intended to be Christian role models who give support to the life of faith of the person they sponsor. It is customary for everyone who is baptized to have 1-2 godparents, male or female. They may be relatives or friends. It is a very serious commitment. In some cases, the Godparents are unable to be at the service, although this is not encouraged. To honor this relationship, the Godparents are given a certificate/prayer card to help them keep their godchild in their prayers. Q: What is the role of St. David s in Holy Baptism? A: St. David s promises to work together to provide an abundant life for all parishioners, especially children. This includes liturgy, education, fellowship and spiritual growth all centered in Jesus Christ. Q: Where may I find out additional information about the theology of the Sacrament of Baptism? A: We encourage all parents to read the rite of the Baptismal Service as found in the Book of Common Prayer beginning on page 301. The next date for Baptism is Sunday, April 27 (the Sunday after Easter). www.stdavidchurch.org 5

HEALING PRAYER MINISTRY Healing Prayer Ministry Healing of Memories Are any among you suffering? They should pray. James 5:13a On Sunday, January 26, 2014 our St. David s community commissioned Healing Prayer ministers to begin a 3-fold Healing ministry. Since then, prayer ministers have been available for healing prayer and unction at our Sunday morning services. Response has been positive as both parishioners and visitors have included healing prayer in the context of the Eucharist. This week, we begin the implementation of the second phase of our Healing Ministry - Healing of Memories. In his sermon this past Sunday, Fr. Swanson spoke to us of the need for healing of the deep woundedness that comes from living in a broken world. We may suffer from carrying the wounds of abandonment, abuse, or addiction. We may be suffering the wounds of loss through miscarriage, abortion, or sudden death of a child or loved one. These experiences can carry with them a spiritual wound; a wound that will need care, compassion, deep prayer and time in order to begin the healing process. In the knowledge that God s desire for us is fullness of life and standing on the authority given to the Church by our Lord Jesus, we, as a community, will be offering Healing of Memories for those in need. Prayers for Healing of Memories will be offered on a Wednesday evening of every month and will be on an appointment only basis. Sessions will be confidential and will include a clergy person and prayer minister. If you feel a desire for deep spiritual healing in your life, please contact Fr. Swanson, Rev. Anne Elizabeth, or Kathy Holman to set up an appointment. Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases and he sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal.
