The Coming of the Holy Spirit The Day of Pentecost May 15, 2016 WELCOME TO ST. JOHN S We re thrilled that you are here today. Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Schroeder or Pastor Maglietto. They would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way they can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY The fifty days have passed and the promised Holy Spirit is poured out upon the Bride of Christ. The once-hidden gospel is no longer the possession of a chosen few. For the Spirit enables the message of salvation to enflame hearts for bearing witness to the ends of the earth. THE DAY OF PENTECOST May 15, 2016 PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O Lord - our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter - we are assembled in your presence to hear your Holy Word. We pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus sake. Amen. St. John s Evangelical Lutheran Church Baraboo, WI 1

V SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT V page 26 of Christian Worship THE RINGING OF THE BELLS and WELCOME TO GOD S HOUSE HYMN O Holy Spirit, Enter In Christian Worship, 185 PLEASE STAND INVOCATION M: The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. OPENING DIALOGUE FOR PENTECOST M: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. C: The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. M: Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? C: If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. M: The Lord said, My Spirit will not contend with man forever. C: O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. M: Jesus said to his disciples, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. C: No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. M: The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. C: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. M: Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. C: Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia! 2 3

HYMN Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest Christian Worship, 177 SONG When Speaking Has Ceased Senior Choir, 10am Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, And make our hearts your place of rest; Come with your grace and heav nly aid, And fill the hearts which you have made. To you, the Counselor, we cry, To you, the gift of God most high; The fount of life, the fire of love, The soul s anointing from above. Drive far away our wily foe, And your abiding peace bestow; If you are our protecting guide, No evil can with us abide. Praise we the Father and the Son And Holy Spirit, with them One, And may the Son on us bestow The gifts that from the Spirit flow! When speaking has ceased and the room has grown still, When solitude creeps over valley and hill, The Spirit of God finds a place to alight And puts our vain fears and trembling to flight. O Spirit of God, fill the earth with Your joy, Give voice to our song that our praise may employ You wellspring of peace to fill ev'ry bare space With sweet notes of gladness and fair tones of grace. When clamor and noise fill the world with their sounds, When harmony flees and loud tumult abounds, The Spirit of God is not driven away; He quiets our heart and forever will stay. O Spirit of God, rising lighter than air, Lift high to the Lord all the weight of our prayer, No burden we carry is ever unknown; No friend of the Spirit is ever alone, never alone. THE WORD PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. C: Amen. PLEASE BE SEATED Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever. 4 FIRST LESSON Genesis 11:1-9 1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, Come, let s make bricks and bake them thoroughly. They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth. 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The Lord said, If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will 5

not understand each other. 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. (NIV84) SONG Holy Spirit, Light divine, Shine upon this heart of mine; Chase the gloom of night away; Turn the darkness into day. Holy Spirit, Love divine, Cleanse this guilty heart of mine; In your mercy pity me; From sin s bondage set me free. Holy Spirit, Light Divine CHILDREN S MESSAGE The young children are invited to come to the front of church for a message just for them. Holy Spirit, Pow r divine, Dwell within this heart of mine; Cast down ev ry idol throne; Reign supreme and reign alone. See, to you I give my heart; Cleanse my life in ev ry part; Your own temple I would be Now and for eternity. SECOND LESSON Acts 2:1-21 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (NIV84) 6 7

VERSE OF THE DAY HYMN Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord Christian Worship, 176 PLEASE STAND GOSPEL John 15:26,27 26 When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. (NIV84) C: Praise be to you, O Christ. BE SEATED SERMON Genesis 11:1-9 8 9

PLEASE STAND The Spirit s Power Trumps the People s Tower Pastor Nick Maglietto PLEASE STAND OFFERING PRAYER NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING During the offering in the 10am service, the Senior Choir sings Veni Sancte Spiritus 10 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Gracious God and Father, we praise you for the countless blessings, which we receive from your hand: the beauties of creation and the bounties of the earth, the joy of life and the pleasure of friendship, the good of work and the gift of rest, the privilege to share happiness and sorrow with one another. Above all we praise and thank you for your saving Word and for your Son s body and blood, which you give us to eat and to drink in the sacrament. Through these means of grace, you send the Holy Spirit into our hearts and unite us to Jesus and to the whole Christian Church on earth. C: Strengthen us through this heavenly food; increase our trust in Christ and our love for one another. M: Great God and Lord, without your continuing help we easily waver in our faith, lose courage, and grow careless in our watchfulness. The times and days are perilous. Give us strength to face the evils of each day with fresh confidence. Open our lips to speak of your grace, and move us to use the gifts that you give us to share your Word of salvation with all people. Protect and prosper the family, the school, the government, and all good institutions that you have established for the benefit of society. Remember in mercy those who are sick and suffering, and bring your healing to troubled homes and lives. C: Move us to pray for those in need and to help them with deeds of kindness. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Now, eternal God and Father, keep us in the saving faith and so enable us to overcome all things through our Lord Jesus Christ. 11

LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus) THE SACRAMENT M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. In the past he spoke to us through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, who is the radiance of his glory. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever: WORDS OF INSTITUTION 12 M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 13

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (Agnus Dei) DISTRIBUTION HYMN We Now Implore God, the Holy Ghost Christian Worship, 190 PLEASE BE SEATED DISTRIBUTION Our Congregation practices the biblical practice of Close Communion. The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness that does not exist. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are not a member of St. John s or a sister WELS or ELS congregation, that you do not commune with us today. If you have any questions, please speak with either of the pastors and they will be happy answer them. 14 15

DISTRIBUTION HYMN O Spirit of Life, O Spirit of God Christian Worship, 186 PLEASE STAND THANK THE LORD M: Hear the prayer of your people, O Lord, that the lips which have praised you here may glorify you in the world, that the eyes which have seen the coming of your Son may long for his coming again, and that all who have received in his true body and blood the pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 16 17

BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. C: Amen. Amen. Amen.
