The Coming of the Holy Spirit The Day of Pentecost June 8, 2014 Theme for the Day: God pours out his Spirit on his people. Scripture Lessons: Joel 2:28-29 Psalm 51b Acts 2:1-21 John 16:5-11 Hymns: 179; 176; 723; 184; 183, st. 1 and 5

4200 Shenandoah Drive Louisville, KY 40241 Steven Lange, Pastor (502) 423-1211 www.hopelouisville.net WELCOME to all our guests. It truly is a pleasure to have you with us today. In order to make your visit as enjoyable as possible, please allow us to answer some common questions about our church and our worship services. Our Mission: Love the Lord. Love each other. Study and spread his Word. Our restrooms are located off the church entryway on either side of the drinking fountain. Baby changing stations are available in both restrooms. We encourage children of all ages to participate in our worship services. So, please don t be afraid to bring them into the service. However, we also realize that children can become restless. We have a nursery room with toys, books, chairs, and other items that you can use to help calm your child. Our ushers will be glad to direct you to the nursery room at any time. Our entire worship service is printed in this booklet. The order of service that we use is a version of the historic liturgy that the Christian Church has used for centuries. Explanations of the various portions of the service are enclosed in square brackets within the service. Red hymn books containing the hymns for the service are located in the racks on the pews. If at any time in the service you have a question, please feel free to ask someone sitting near you for help. We are more than happy to assist you in any way we can. Headsets are available for those who desire assistance hearing the service. Please speak to an usher to obtain a headset if you would like to use one during the service. Before you leave today, please sign our guest register. It is located on the lectern in the church entryway. If you have any other questions, please feel free to speak to our pastor. Our ushers and greeters also stand ready to assist you. God bless your visit. We hope to see you again soon. 2

A Note to All Our Guests During this service, we will celebrate the Lord s Supper. Since this sacrament is the Lord s Supper and not ours, we are careful to follow our Lord s instructions. In particular, we take to heart these important truths: 1. In the Lord s Supper, Jesus truly gives us his body and blood together with the bread and the wine. Jesus says, Take and eat; this is my body Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood (Matthew 26:26-28). 2. In the Lord s Supper, we express a unity of faith with one another. Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf (1 Corinthians 10:17). 3. Our Lord urges us to practice this unity with great love and care. Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself (1 Corinthians 11:27,29). Because we take these truths seriously, we invite all communicant members of our congregation or of a sister congregation in the Wisconsin Synod (WELS) or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) to commune with us today. However, we ask that those who are not members of a sister congregation refrain from taking the Lord s Supper with us at this time. In doing this, we are not judging anyone s faith. Out of love for our Lord and all people, we simply desire to discuss the Bible s teachings with our guests before communing together. We want all who commune to receive the Lord s Supper for their benefit and in a way that follows our Lord s instructions. If you have any questions about this or any other teaching of the Bible or if you would like information about how to join our congregation please feel free to speak to our pastor. PREPARATION Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front part of the hymnal. A Personal Preparation for Holy Communion is found on page 156 in the front part of the hymnal. Out of courtesy to your fellow worshipers, please silence all electronic devices before the service. Thank you. 3

HYMN Hail Thee, Festival Day Hymn 179 4

Please stand. INVOCATION [We are standing in the presence of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in whose name we have been baptized.] M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: (spoken) Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS [As we enter God s presence, we confess our sins and receive his forgiveness.] M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PRAYER AND PRAISE [God s forgiveness moves us to offer him our prayers and our praise.] LORD, HAVE MERCY (Kyrie) [We pray for the needs of all people, asking God to hear our prayer and grant us his help.] M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord. M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ. M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord. 5

M: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in your tender care: M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise. O LORD, OUR LORD [Our Lord s name indeed is glorious. We praise him in this song for all the glorious things he has done for us in Christ Jesus, our Savior.] 6

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever. Please be seated. THE WORD [We gather at Jesus feet and hear his Word in Lessons from the Old and New Testaments and in the sermon.] FIRST LESSON Joel 2:28-29 The prophet Joel prophesies about the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. 28 And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 7

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 51b Setting from Christian Worship: Supplement 8

SECOND LESSON Acts 2:1-21 The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: Aren t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. VERSE OF THE DAY M: Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. Please stand. [Out of respect for the words of Jesus, we stand for the reading of the Gospel.] 9

GOSPEL John 16:5-11 Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit on his disciples. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, Where are you going? 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. After the reading of the Gospel, the Minister will say: M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Please be seated. HYMN OF THE DAY Come Holy Ghost, God and Lord Hymn 176 10

SERMON Please stand. NICENE CREED [This statement of our biblical beliefs was formulated in 325 A.D. and states what Scripture says about our Triune God and about Jesus Christ, true God and true man, our Savior.] C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated. OFFERING [In response to God s love, we bring him our offerings.] Please stand. 11

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH [We go to God with our prayers and requests, confident that he will hear and answer us in the way he knows is best.] M: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. M: Lord of our life, as Your Son, Jesus, ascended into heaven, He told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they had received power from on high. On this day You poured out Your Spirit upon all flesh. We rejoice that in Baptism, You have also poured Your Holy Spirit upon us, forgiving our sins and saving us. Renew us with the Holy Spirit so that our tongues may continually sing Your glory. C: Open our mouths to proclaim Your mercy. Make us all Your prophets as we proclaim Your salvation through Jesus to the world. M: God of our salvation, through Your Holy Spirit in Baptism, You have grafted us into the Body of Christ. Continue to pour out Your Holy Spirit upon all pastors of the Church. Empower their words, that they may speak Your Word. C: By the Holy Spirit, use their faithful preaching and teaching to work faith in Jesus in hearts hardened by sin, death and the world, that all who call on You shall be saved. M: Light of this dark world, You have sent the Holy Spirit to Your Church as the comforter. Soothe the wounds of Your people. C: According to Your will, bring restoration to broken families, heal the sick, uplift the depressed, provide for the poor, uphold the forgotten and answer the prayers of all who call out to You for aid. M: Hope of every nation, in these last days, send Your Spirit of wisdom upon our earthly leaders: our president, governor, and all elected and appointed officials who bear authority over us. Grant that we may live in peace. Guard those who protect us by serving in the armed forces. C: Preserve our freedoms of worship and speech, that Your Word might remain unfettered in our nation. M: Advocate and Defender whose light never wanes, we bless You that on the great and magnificent day, You will raise all of the dead and give unto those who believe in Jesus eternal life. We remember with thanksgiving those who have gone before us and are at rest. C: Comfort those who mourn, and bring us all with them into the light that knows no darkness. M: Spirit of unity and peace, as we approach the table of grace to receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus, make us of one heart, mind and confession. Fill our mouths with the forgiveness won by Jesus on the cross. C: Strengthen us with this holy meal, that we may continue to serve You faithfully. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: All honor and glory are Yours, Almighty Father, with the Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER [We pray the prayer that Jesus taught us.] C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 12

THE SACRAMENT [Having been fed by Jesus Word, we prepare to feast on his true body and blood in the sacrament of Holy Communion.] M: The Lord be with you. M: Lift up your hearts. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, he empowered his Church to be witnesses of Christ to the ends of the earth. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Sanctus) [We join the thousands of angels and all Christians who have died in the faith in their heavenly song of praise to our God, who loves to be worshiped.] 13

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (Agnus Dei) [In this ancient song of the church, we poor sinners come to Christ, the perfect Lamb of God, pleading for his mercy and peace.] 14

PRAYER OF PREPARATION [Jesus wants us to be properly prepared to receive his Holy Supper. Therefore, all those intending to commune today join in praying the prayer of preparation.] C: Lord Jesus Christ, we lift up our hearts with thanksgiving and praise. Through the blood of your covenant, you have made us worthy to receive your Holy Supper. In this sacrament, time and eternity meet as we celebrate a foretaste of the feast now enjoyed by all who are in heavenly glory. As we receive your true body and blood, we rejoice in our salvation through you, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit are one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. DISTRIBUTION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Guests, please read and take note of the explanation of our communion practice on page 3 in this worship folder. If you have any questions about this or any other Bible teaching, please feel free to speak to the pastor after the service. We thank you for your help. 15

THANKSGIVING [We give thanks to God for the tremendous blessings he has given us his Word and Sacrament.] Please stand. THANK THE LORD [We break forth in songs of praise and shouts of thanksgiving to the God who has so blessed us here and now is leading us out into the world to tell everyone what he has done.] M: Hear the prayer of your people, O Lord, that the lips which have praised you here may glorify you in the world, that the eyes which have seen the coming of your Son may long for his coming again, and that all who have received in his true body and blood the gift of your forgiveness may be restored to live a new and holy life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION [We close our worship service with the blessing of our Triune God, the same blessing he gave to his Old Testament people thousands of years ago.] M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another Serve the Lord with gladness. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. 19
