WEEK THIRTEEN October 9th 15th Sermon Outline 1 Peter 3:18 22 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God s right hand with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. I. INTRODUCTION A. When you love someone you want to be with them. B. God loved us so He made a way to bring us to Himself and guaranteed our future with Him. C. That s why Peter said that Christians have a living hope. Christians have a living hope that because of Jesus they will live together with God. II. WHY CAN WE HAVE THIS HOPE? A. We have the hope of living together with God because Jesus sacrifice was sufficient to save us. (1 Peter 3:18 21a) 1. There is no hope of eternal life without Jesus. 2. Jesus suffered once for sins to bring us to God. (Hebrews 9:26 28) 3. Therefore we can draw close because the way to God has been opened for us in Christ (Hebrews 10:19 25) 4. Those who are in Christ are saved from sin and judgment just as surely as Noah and his family who were saved by being in the ark. a. Jesus proclaimed His victory to those who rejected Him and were imprisoned. b. Those who entered the ark by faith were saved in Noah s day. Those who enter the ark who is Christ by faith will be saved. c. Our baptism symbolizes this salvation. The water doesn t save. We pass through the water as a symbol that we are truly in Christ. (Romans 6:3 4) B. We have the hope of living together with God because Jesus resurrection is sufficient guarantee of our victory. (1 Peter 3:21b 22)
1 Peter WEEK THIRTEEN Sermon Notes 1. All our hope is rooted in the historical fact of the resurrection. 2. After His resurrection Jesus ascended to the right hand of God with all powers and authorities submitted to Him. (1 Peter 3:22) 3. Therefore, Peter said, we don t need to be afraid or lose hope because Jesus sovereignly works in all circumstances to accomplish His purpose for our good. (Romans 8:18 39; 2 Corinthians 4:13 18) 4. Jesus resurrection is the guarantee that in Christ we are victorious over death and will live with Him forever. III. CONCLUSION 1 Thessalonians 4:16 18
1 Peter WEEK THIRTEEN WA R M U P God, in His perfect justice, cannot just shrug off our sin. But He took our sin and put it on Jesus Christ, the righteous, to bear the penalty we deserve. The purpose was that Christ might bring us to God. The word was used by the Greek writer Xenophon for an admission to an audience with the Great King. You just didn t stroll into the presence of a great king and say, How s it going? You had to have someone to introduce you properly. Because the righteous Christ bore our sins, He can bring us into an audience with the Great King. Who was the most famous person you ever met in your life? Was it a chance meeting or did someone help set it up? DIG I N Read 1 Peter 3:18 22 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
1 Peter WEEK THIRTEEN REFLECTIONS 1 Peter 3:18 22 What does it say about the love of God that He would sacrifice Jesus in order to bring you to God? What does it say about your worth to Him? Every detail in the Bible is packed with significance. How does Peter s use of the story of Noah and his family in the ark help you to understand the importance of your need to be in Christ? In 1 Corinthians 15:15 22 Paul describes the importance of the resurrection. Describe what he says is the reality if there is no resurrection. In your own words describe what the truth of 1 Corinthians 15:20 22 means to your life now and eternal future. TAKE IN Ask Yourself How does it help you to live and to trust God in your current circumstances to know that Jesus has gone into heaven, and sits at God s right hand with angels, authorities and powers in submission to Him? (1 Peter 3:22)
1 Peter WEEK THIRTEEN PRAY UP Ask God Jesus, thank you for Your willingness to suffer on my behalf. Help me realize this week the price that was paid so I can live. Holy Spirit, as I go forward this week, help me live my life for the glory of God. Prayer Requests
