St. Odilo Parish Religious Education Policies PHILOSOPHY At St. Odilo Parish we believe that Jesus is true God and true man and that He gave us the Catholic Church to help guide us to heaven. Therefore in St. Odilo s catechism program we teach unashamedly that the Catholic Church is the true Church. Our children learn all the teachings of the Church including the seven Sacraments and Ten Commandments and all the prayers. MASS ON SUNDAY All Catholics are obliged to attend Mass* every weekend (Saturday evening or Sunday) under pain of mortal sin. Attendance will be taken. *Any child who does not regularly attend Mass will be asked to leave the program and will not be able to receive their sacrament. SUNDAY MASS SCHEDULE Saturday: 4:00PM (English) Sunday: 7:00 AM (Spanish), 8:00AM (English), 9:30 AM (Traditional Rite/English sermon), 11:00AM (English), 12:30PM (Spanish) ELIGIBILITY FOR REGISTRATION Your child/children may be enrolled in our religious education program provided you are a registered and active member of St. Odilo Parish. Registration must take place before your child can be accepted into the program. Active membership means attending Mass at St. Odilo every weekend. Attendance will be taken. We will dismiss from the program any child who does not attend Mass weekly. FIRST DAY OF CLASS Students asking to receive their First Communion/ Confirmation* this year, must know their prayers before the first day of class (see Required Prayers on pages 11-12). On the first day of class, 2nd-4th grade students will receive an oral quiz, while 5th-8th grade students will receive a written quiz. Moreover, weekly/monthly quizzes will also need to be passed, in addition to a test that will be administered the last week of January. If your student does not pass the exams he/ she will not be eligible to receive his/her sacrament this year. CONTINUITY OF PROGRAM This is a Catholic program. Therefore, we teach the Catholic Faith, the religion founded on the Apostles by Jesus Christ. This program is intended for faith formation and not just sacramental preparation. The program is designed to have continuity from first through eighth grade. Skipping of years in between sacraments does not allow for adequate faith formation. Every family is encouraged to return each year for further faith formation. +++++++++++ *Please note that our Confirmation program is now a 2-year program. Only those students that were in our 5th grade program last year, will be eligible for Confirmation this year. 3 4
CLASS ATTENDANCE Your child is expected to attend all the sessions for the entire year. A child may be excused only for serious reasons. A child with more than two absences may be dismissed from our program. As one session builds on another, much will be lost by missing even one class. Students will be required to make up any missed work by the next class time. Please contact your child s teacher. If a child is absent, it is the parent s responsibility to call the Religious Education Office at 484-5321. This must be done anytime before the class session. We expect the children to be on time and remain for the entire class session. Please note that two tardies will equal one absence. Also, no child will ever be permitted to leave class early without a written note and a call from the parent. GOOD CONDUCT For the sake of all involved in our program students, teachers, parents appropriate behavior and modest attire are required of all students. Should a discipline problem arise the following procedures will be taken: 1 st offense Catechist and Religious Education Coordinator will speak to student. 2 nd offense Catechist will contact parent. 3 rd offense Religious Education Coordinator and Pastor will schedule a meeting with parents, teacher and student. If there is no improvement, the child will be asked to leave the program. REQUIRED MATERIALS On the first day of class all students will need to bring 5 sharpened pencils and a Composition Notebook. Students from grades 2 nd - 4 th will also need to bring a small (8 count) box of crayons. Please place all these materials in a Ziplock bag marked with your child s name. All students will be given a folder and a text book at the beginning of the school year. Students are required to bring these materials to class each week. The folder will contain the students work, homework for class, and a parent signature sheet. If there is any information to be sent home to parents, it will be distributed in class and given to the students to place in their folders. Please check and sign your child s folder EACH WEEK. Parents should not enter the building to pick up their children. Children will be escorted to the door by their teachers and/or teachers aides. Any child who is not picked up immediately will be brought to the catechism office to wait for his/her parent(s), or responsible adult(s), to pick them up. While class is in session, the parking lot will ONLY be used as a drop-off / pick-up zone. REQUIRED PRAYERS ON 1 ST DAY OF CLASS Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our Father Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory Be Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Act of Contrition O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins, because of Your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my God, Who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen. 11 12
