The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) November 2, 2014
All Souls Weekend How blessed we are that this year All Souls falls on a Sunday, so the entire church can celebrate and commemorate praying for the dead together. Because All Saints Day falls on a Saturday, it is not a holy day of obligation, but of course remains a feast day. The Church has always had a special devotion to praying for all the dead, especially souls in purgation on their way to the face of God! We pray for the dead at every Mass. At every weekend mass, we pray for all the dead who were called home that week. When we say and so for whom this Mass is offered, it is because that sacrificial Eucharist is offered for the remission of the sins of that person(s). There is a great intimacy between those of us here on earth and those asleep in Christ, especially at Mass. In some ways we can be closest to our deceased loved ones at Mass, since that is where we worship Him with whom they are! There is a noble practice of having spiritual bouquets and obtaining a Mass card to be sent to the family. This stems from the centuries long practice of praying for our dead and their souls. The wonderful theology of the communion of saints and the mystical body of the Church teaches us that we can assist the dead by our prayers. So while we all have memories of those who have died, when we pray for them we can still give them spiritual gifts and graces. This prayer of praying for the dead also elicits and builds charity in our hearts and in our prayers. There are two Books of the Dead, one in each of our two churches. We will pray for those souls for the month of November. Please be sure to add the names of your loved ones you would like us to remember at the altar. St. John Crysostom said, Let us help and commemorate them. If Job s sons were purified by their father s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them. May all our loved ones be purified after death so to enter fully in the presence of Christ and our Heavenly Father. May others pray for us after we return to the Father. May they rest in peace until the resurrection of the body! Fr. Taillon
