commemoration of all faithful departed The Solemn Holy Eucharist November 2, 2016 7:30 pm Washington National Cathedral

about today s commemoration The observance of All Souls Day is an extension of the Feast of All Saints. From very early times, the word saint was most associated with persons of heroic sanctity, whose deeds were recalled with gratitude by later generations. By the tenth century, it became customary to set aside another day on which the Church remembered that vast body of the faithful who, though no less members of the company of the redeemed, are unknown in the wider fellowship of the Church. It then became a day for particular remembrance of family members and friends. In keeping with this practice, we will recall by name those who have been a part of the broader Cathedral community who died over this past year. 2

The Entrance Rite organ voluntary Psalm-Prelude, Set 1, No. 2 Herbert Howells (1892-1983) The people stand at the procession. introit and kyrie Maurice Duruflé (1902 1986) Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion, et tibi redetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn befits thee, O God in Zion, and to thee a vow shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, for unto thee all flesh shall come. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. the collect for the departed The presider sings the collect and the people respond by singing Amen. The Word of God The people are seated. the first reading Wisdom 3:1-9 But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

psalm 130 plainsong Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared. I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; With him there is plenteous redemption, and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. the second reading I Corinthians 15:50-58 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing and remain standing through the Gospel. hymn 357 Jesus, Son of Mary Adoro devote the holy gospel John 5:24 27 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life. Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. 4

The people are seated at the invitation of the homilist. homily The Very Reverend Randolph Marshall Hollerith necrology Gracious God, we pray to you for our sisters and brothers, and for all those whom we love but see no longer. The necrology is read. pie jesu Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem; dona eis sempiternam requiem. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest, rest everlasting. The people stand. the prayers of the people After each intercession, the people respond, Amen. Silence is kept. the peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. the offertory The people remain seated while an offering is received to support the Cathedral s ministry of sharing God s love with the world. anthem at the offertory Domine Jesu Christe, Rex Gloriae, libera animas defunctorum de poenis inferni, et de profundo lacu; de ore leonis, ne absorbeat Tartarus, ne candant in obscurum. Hostias et preces tibi, Domine, laudis offerimus; tu suscipe pro animabus illis quarum hodie memoriam facimus; fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam, quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus. Amen. O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the hand of hell, and from the pit of destruction; deliver them from the lion s mouth that the grave devour them not; that they go not down to the realms of darkness. Sacrifice and prayer do we offer to thee, O Lord: do thou accept them for the souls departed, in whose memory we make this oblation: and grant them, Lord, to pass from death unto life: which thou hast promised in ages past to Abraham and his seed. Amen. 5

The people stand. The Holy Communion the great thanksgiving The presider offers thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available in Christ, and in response the choir sings: sanctus & benedictus Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Saboath. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory: Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The presider gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ s passion and resurrection and prays over the bread and wine. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. 6

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Libera me, Domine, libera. Deliver me, O Lord, from death eternal, on that dreadful day: when the heavens and the earth shall quake, when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire. I am seized by trembling, and I fear until the judgment should come, and I also dread the coming wrath. O that day, day of wrath, day of calamity and misery, momentous day, and exceedingly bitter. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Deliver me, O Lord, deliver me. 7
