Centreville United Methodist Church 6400 Old Centreville Road Centreville, VA 20121 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Jesus says the greatest commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself (Luke 10:27). Centreville United Methodist Church s Adult Christian Education Program, Journey - Growing in Faith provides opportunities to deepen our understanding and love of God and others through growth and study. Journey - Growing in Faith is designed with each of us at CUMC in mind as we seek to faithfully live and fulfill God s commandment through a commitment to Worship+2: Worship, Grow, Serve. This fall, CUMC s Journey program will kick off its third year with new classes, lectures and special events to help you GROW in your faith. There are short-term and long-term opportunities offered on a variety of days, at a variety of times, led by gifted and dedicated teachers. These include studies on books of the Bible, prayer, fruit of the Spirit, Christian books more. We invite you to read through this catalog, designed to support and engage you, as you take the next step on your faith journey. CUMC is grateful for the many hearts and hands whose dedication and hard work, through prayer, teaching, leadership, visioning and planning are bringing the Journey to CUMC. Class Journey Fall 2015 Day, Time, Start date, and Duration Teacher Class Material Room Living Beyond Yourself Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit, A Beth Moore Study Through this study participants will look at the supernatural aspects of the fruit and that you cannot grow, learn, or produce the fruit on your own. Beth challenges you to develop the fruit by maintaining an intimate relationship with the Spirit of God. A Spiritfilled life truly results in living beyond yourself. Tuesdays 12:30-2:30 PM September 29 11 Weeks Carol Engelbrecht Participant Guide $16 218 The Christian Faith and the American Civil War The American Civil War is perhaps the most significant formative event to date in our nation's history. The War played an important role in shaping America's Christian faith and our modern Protestant denominations, but faith also had a significant impact on the course of the war and the struggle on the home front. Join David and Rebecca Welker for an evening in which you'll learn about Christian faith during the Civil War and how the impact of this great struggle still reverberates in our faith today. Tuesday 7:30-9:00 PM October 6 One Night Class Dave and Rebecca Welker No Cost TBA Praying the Psalms The Rev. Dr. Bert Sikkelee will lead a class that engages all types of Biblical Psalms, but especially the laments (complaints) to God. Using Walter Brueggemann s categories of Orientation, Disorientation and Reorientation, Bert will involve the participants in as much discussion as the class size will allow. Wednesday 7:30-9:00 PM October 7 3 weeks Rev. Dr. Bert Sikkelee No Cost Bring your Bible, a notepad and a pen! 216 Confronting the Controversies - A Study for Youth By Adam Hamilton Youth are invited to a three week study/discussion with Pastor Felumlee on some of the controversial topics of today - such as the separation of church and state, the death penalty, euthanasia, abortion, homosexuality, and other topics as they come up. Using Adam Hamilton s book, Confronting the Controversies, we will learn how to think through complex moral issues, applying both Biblical and theological thinking; learn how to dialogue about moral issues while maintaining respect for persons on both sides of the divide, and see how the Christian faith relates to critical issues in our society. We will begin with a discussion of the death penalty and then decide which topics to discuss in our two remaining classes. Thursdays 7:30-9:00 PM October 8 3 weeks Rev. Dr. Alan Felumlee No Cost (Books are available for further reading/ study) 218 Page 6

Sundays 12:30-2:00 PM Second Sunday every other month Upcoming dates: October 11 December 13 One Day Class Rev. Dr. Alan Felumlee Rev. Jennifer Coffey Rev. Kevin Havens No Cost With the Pastors Fellowship Hall Classroom Why Paul (Still) Matters Sure, the apostle Paul was one of the formative figures in earliest Christianity, but is he of relevance today? Many contemporary Christians would say that while they love Jesus, they are more than a little wary of His servant Paul. Is Paul s bad press justified? Sunday 6:30-8:30 PM October 25 One Night Class Rev. Dr. Craig Hill Guest Lecturer No Cost Sanctuary In this short class session, we will consider some of the reasons why Paul is still important, the ways in which he is popularly misunderstood, and key teachings that are as vital and valuable today as they were nearly two millennia ago. The Christ-Centered Woman By Kimberley Dunnam In this six-week in-depth Bible study, Kimberly Dunnam Reisman helps women to find balance at every age and stage of life. Confronting the daily chaos of competing demands from a new perspective, she asks not How do I juggle my responsibilities? but How do I make choices that reflect my relationship with Christ and his direction for my life? Using chapter three of the Apostle Paul s letter to the Ephesians as a biblical foundation, the study identifies barriers to balanced living and explores what the Bible teaches about Christcentered living. Mondays 7:00-8:45 PM October 26 6 weeks Diane Pauling Participant Guide Cost: $11 218 Christianity and World Religions A Study for Youth By Adam Hamilton Are you a youth at CUMC who has questions about the many different world religions? Why are there so many different religions? How should Christians view other religions? What do my non-christian friends at school really believe? This 3-week study will use Adam Hamilton s book : Christianity and World Religions Wrestling with Questions People Ask to gain a deeper appreciation of Christian beliefs and other religions. Wednesdays 7:30-8:30 PM November 4 3 weeks Bob Turner No Cost (Books are available for further reading/ study) 216 Page 7
