African-American Firsts in Military History Presented by the CTBC Veterans Committee Brigadier General Matthew A. Zimmerman - first black U. S. Army Chaplain to attain the rank of General Warrant Officer (for mer Staff Sergeant) Jonathan Holsey, US Army - first amputee to be accepted to U. S. Army Warrant Officer School Master Chief Carl Brashear - first black U. S. Navy Diver, Master Diver and Master Chief (Movie - Men of Honor) Lieutenant Colonel Shawna Kimbrell - first woman to complete fighter pilot training in the U. S. Air Force Command Sergeant Major Teresa King - first woman to serve as Commandant of the school for U. S. Army Drill Sergeants Sergeant Major Gilbert Hashmark Johnson, U. S. Marines Corps - A notable Montford Point Marine and one of the first black Drill Instructors. He served at the (then) segregated Montford Point Training Camp at Camp Lejeune, NC. After his death, the facility was renamed in his honor; it was the first military installation named for a black person. He earned the nickname Hashmark in the Marine Corps because of the service stripes worn on his sleeves noting his previous years of service in the U. S. Army and the U. S. Navy. The Montford Point Marines The first 20,000 African-American men to serve in the (then) segregated U. S. Marine Corps from 1942-1949. They trained at a segregated Boot Camp at Montford Point, near Camp Lejeune and New River, NC. The Marine Corps was the last military service branch to fully integrate its service personnel. President Obama presented the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award given by Congress, to the men in June 2012. In March 2013, the U. S. Navy commissioned the first Mobile Landing Platform in the fleet the - USNS Montford Point - MLP 1, in San Diego, CA. In July 2016, a monument was unveiled in Camp Lejeune, NC, near Camp Montford Point, in honor of the Montford Point Marines. August 25th is National Montford Point Marines Day. In addition, production is currently underway of a movie which will tell the story of the Marines of Montford Point. The Montford Point Marine Association (MPMA) is the only veteran organization which holds an annual fundraising/promotional campaign where local Chapter Queens and a National Queen are crowned. Dr. Stacy L. Henderson was crowned the MPMA National Queen twice and crowned the Chicago Chapter Queen three times. She is a Life Member of the Montford Point Marine Association.
