Happy Birthday Mom! by Father Michael This weekend my Mom celebrates her 90 th birthday. The family festivities will be on Saturday. On Sunday, I am hosting a group of her friends at the house. It will be a busy weekend for her, but I hope it is one in which she can celebrate life with the many people who have been part of her journey. She is a remarkable woman who has taught me so much. May God continue to bless her and shower His blessings upon her. Happy Birthday, Mom! Allow me to offer a great big thank you to all those who gave in last week s second collection. We received over $5,000 towards our Catholic Ministries Appeal goal. I deeply appreciate your support of this effort. I look forward to announcing within the next few weeks that we have reached our goal. Your generosity helps to maintain various ministries throughout the diocese. And, it will benefit Holy Cross once we reach our goal. On Wednesday we celebrated All Souls Day. There are certain celebrations in the life of the church that just naturally work well. For example, on Ash Wednesday we don t need to convince anyone to come to church; the place is packed. There is that same spirit on All Souls Day. It may not draw huge numbers, but for those who are there it just makes sense. It is a time for all of us to be united in the mystery of death and resurrection. At our special evening Mass we pray in particular for all our parishioners who died in the past year. But, for all of us it is an opportunity to hold in prayer all our loved ones who have gone before us. Needless to say, this is an important week for our nation as we will be choosing our next president along with many other elected officials. There is tremendous passion and emotion that surrounds this election. As I shared with you a few weeks ago, there is an important perspective to keep in mind whenever we find ourselves in a difficult situation. It is not ultimately useful to say who was right and who was wrong, or who is the winner or loser, but rather to focus on the problems that lie before us. No one single candidate in any election will resolve all issues. Some will be pleased with the results, others will be disappointed, angry and concerned. Regardless of what happens, there will always be a need for all people to address ongoing issues of peace, justice, and respect for basic human rights. We need to continue to offer our needs, worries and prayers to the Lord. We need to seek to grow in understanding our faith and all that God calls us to. May God bless our families. May God bless America. The Parish Office is closed on Friday, November 11th for Veterans Day. 3

We are once again requesting gift cards to local stores (i.e., Kohls, Target, Wal- Mart) to enable our families to purchase for themselves and their children the items they need. As you may know we have also helped the following agencies for the last several years and will continue to do so this Christmas: Olsen s Rest Home is a neighborhood facility for frail elderly on Gibbs Pond Rd. Mercy Haven is a provider of housing and other services for persons who are elderly, those living with mental illness, those families who are on limited income and those with special needs. Pronto is a human service agency located in Brentwood helping people in need with food, clothing and other basic necessities. They assist approximately 500 families for the holidays each year. Talbot House Chemical Dependency Crisis Center is a 24-hour voluntary chemical dependence crisis center licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to provide short-term medically monitored inpatient withdrawal services to adult men and women who are in crisis. This facility provides nourishing meals, counseling, limited transportation, support groups, and referrals.
