Five years ag the ELCA jined wrldwide effrts t fight malaria by launching the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Our gal: $15 millin by 2015 t supprt the malaria prgrams f ur Lutheran cmpanins and partners. Tday, we re 94 percent f the way there. Tgether, ur wrk has stretched int 13 cuntries thrughut Africa. We have fully funded ur cmmitments t 10 cuntry prgrams with psitive results underway, but cmmunities in three cuntries still are depending n yur supprt. Diacnal Minister Jessica Nipp Hacker shared the stry f Ester Akirr, a resident f rural Uganda. Ester lst her first child t malaria. She said, Befre the Lutheran malaria prgram came t the Katakwi District in Uganda, many children were dying frm malaria. Nw, in Ester s cmmunity, vlunteer health teams have received training n hw t prevent malaria, recgnize the signs and symptms and even test and treat the disease. This brings malaria prgramming t the lcal level - and tgether, we are seeing psitive results. One part f the malaria prgram is a savings and lan prgram. Members f the savings grup cntributed t buy a savings bx and bkkeeping materials. The members started saving, sme members did the bkkeeping, and mney was lent t members fr businesses. The mney is paid back after 3 mnths and members share the prfits. Ester has participated, and nw if a child is sick, Ester has the mney fr testing and medicine. Malaria has been ne f the leading causes f death fr children under five in sub-saharan Africa. Malaria is preventable and treatable. With the help f individuals and cngregatins, the ELCA is helping t reduce the death rate, and give the peple hpe fr a malaria-free future. If yu wuld like t cntribute, yu may give thrugh First Lutheran, with an indicatin f malaria.

It is inspiring t hear all the different ways peple give at First Lutheran Church and Schl. I recently read an article in Thrivent magazine abut learning t let g. A man was asked Shuld I tithe based n the grss r net? The respnse was, That depends. D yu want t be blessed by Gd n the grss r n the net? Why is it s hard fr us t trust that Gd will prvide? Fr me it is because I have a hard time nt being in cntrl. I frget that I need t let Gd d the driving, and remember that my steering wheel cntrls nthing. If I can learn t give with a cheerful heart, then I can pen myself up t receiving Gd s blessings. I like what Jillene said in her stewardship temple talk; If Gd gave us His nly Sn, what wuld He nt give us in ur time f need? There is nthing He will nt share with us if we trust in Him. 2 nd Crinthians 9:6-8 says Remember this: Whever sws sparingly will reap sparingly, and whever sws generusly will als reap generusly. Each f yu shuld give what yu have decided in yur heart t give, nt reluctantly r under cmpulsin, fr Gd lves a cheerful giver. And Gd is able t bless yu abundantly, s that in all things at all times, having all that yu need, yu will abund in every gd wrk.
