The OPEN DOOR LAKEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) An Open Door to a Vital Faith Democracy Langston Hughes Democracy will not come Today, this year Nor ever Through compromise and fear. I have as much right As the other fellow has To stand On my two feet And own the land. I tire so of hearing people say, Let things take their course. Tomorrow is another day. I do not need my freedom when I'm dead. I cannot live on tomorrow's bread. Freedom Is a strong seed Planted In a great need. I live here, too. I want freedom Just as you. CWF/DW CORNER Watch for your Silent Tea letter this month! DID YOU KNOW? Well, as most of you know, Brandi, our Administrative Assistant is expecting her first child July 29, 2016. We will be looking for Sawyer to be arriving on that date if not before. This is an exciting time for Brandi and she will be taking 8 weeks maternity leave to be with that precious baby boy. During Brandi s absence some of our wonderful ladies have volunteered to do office duty until such time as Brandi is back at work. Valetha Ermoian will take on the job of preparing our weekly church bulletin and also our church newsletter. This is a BIG job and I know that Valetha will excel at this job as she does at all her other church duties. Thank you so much Valetha. The following is a list of the ladies who have volunteered to do phone duty during Brandi s absence. Sue Lowry, Pat McFerrin, Marilyn Jackson, Janice Kriegel, Jean McAtee, Jean Vestal, Alice Young, Margaret Holley, Wanda Morgan, Janda Hill, Billie Jorda and me. We will have the church office open from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm each day. I would ask that in Brandi s absence you please limit your emails to the church. If you have information you need to share, please give Richard at call at 722-9927 or email him at rhrol@aol.com or Linda Ferguson 776-1658 email lferguson@grandecom.net One of us will see that all pertinent information gets shared with our church family. WHAT YOU DO IS A HUNDRED TIMES MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT YOU SAY. Linda Ferguson

Minister s Insights and Inspiration Thanks to everyone who helped plan and participated in our Independence Sunday worship service last week. I have heard great reports about Steve Mansen and Jeffrey Arnold and their pulpit and music presentations. Our attendance was excellent for a summer holiday weekend. Jean and I had a wonderful holiday weekend. Our Pastor s is now scheduled for three sessions on Thursdays July 14, 21 and 28. Young people attending are Ella Cromie, Aiden and Calvin Forehand, Peyton Roach, and Stevie Strickland. Others are welcome. Please call Brandi in the church office or me and let us know your young person would like to be included. We look forward to a baptismal service on a Sunday morning following the completion of the. The Christian Flag on our chancel is in tatters. We have a new one to replace it. Flags have been symbols of great importance for centuries. Rather than just take the old flag off the flagpole and put the new one on, we plan to include this important event as part of one of our worship services soon. Watch for more information. Young people preparing for ministry need the support of and inclusion in the activities of local congregations. They need secure places to practice their skills. On Sunday, July 24, Travis Jones, a friend of Dick Taylor s, will preach for us for a second time. He did a fine job with his first presentation. On Sunday, August 14, our own Logan Fraser will fill our pulpit. When we invited Logan to preach for us, she responded enthusiastically and asked if she could also do our Children s Moment that Sunday to fit in with her sermon. We responded, Absolutely, yes! I will preside for our worship on July 24 and August 14. A topic that surfaces frequently in our discussions and various meetings is having new people in our worship services who become interested in our church. Seventy (70) to (90) percent of the people who attend worship for the first time in any congregation are invited by the people who attend, not the minister. Who are they? Neighbors; relatives; close personal friends; newcomers to the community; persons moving into, building or buying new homes; hobby, hunting or fishing friends; families with new babies; and contacts in organizations and clubs. Who in these groups can you invite to worship? Give it a try. They might come and stay! Richard
