The Holy Ghost Lesson 2 Forbid not to Speak with Tongues Now that we can understand the fulfillment of prophecies of the Old Testament prophets Isaiah, Joel, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel on the day of Pentecost concerning the Holy Ghost; I would like to direct our attention to the understanding of what takes place when you receive the Holy Ghost, as well as understanding the difference between divers kinds of tongues and the receiving of the Holy Ghost, and showing that the receiving of the Holy Ghost is not a one time experience. Isaiah 28:9-12 9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. Acts 2:1-4 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Just as the Prophet Isaiah prophesied, with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. We see this fulfilled when the Holy Ghost came upon each of them and they began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance! The initial sign of receiving the free gift of the Holy Ghost was the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance, just as the Prophet prophesied would be the case.

Remember: If you have not received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance, you have not received the free gift of the Holy Ghost. The Confusion: 1) Many people are under the belief that the Holy Ghost is automatically given to you at some point. Many believe the receiving of the Holy Ghost takes place after repenting and accepting Christ into their lives. However, this is in direct contradiction to scripture. 2) Some people believe that the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance is only one of the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost and not everyone has this gift. So not all people that have the Holy Ghost will speak with other tongues. The error in this belief is not recognizing that you must first receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost before you can receive one of the nine gifts of the Holy Ghost. To state this very plainly: The 9 gifts of the Holy Ghost are not the same as the initial receiving of the Holy Ghost. The 9 gifts of the Holy Ghost are gifts of the gift. You must first have the gift before you can receive any of the other gifts of the gift. Another words, the gift of divers kinds of tongues is not the same as the receiving of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance. Divers kinds of tongues is one of the nine gifts of the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is not automatically given to you because you have repented of your sins and have been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins. The scriptures state this very plainly. The Samaritans receive the Holy Ghost... Acts 8:5-18 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.

9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: 10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. 11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Here we see very clearly that these people had repented of their sins and were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins, and that none of them had received the free gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is not automatically given to you because you believe on the name of Jesus Christ. Nor is it given to you just because you repent of your sins. Nor is it given to you just because you have been baptized into Christ. 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Remember: The scriptures do not have to redundantly state over and over again, that when you receive the Holy Ghost that you will speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance. We already saw that the Prophet Isaiah prophesied that the receiving of the free gift of the Holy Ghost would come with stammering lips and another tongue and we already saw that when the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the people on the day of Pentecost they all began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. So even though it does not state here that the people spoke with other tongues, we already know from the Prophet Isaiah that this will take place when you receive the

Holy Ghost and we know that when the first people received the Holy Ghost they spoke with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. You can then conclude that what Simon the sorcerer saw was that after the Apostle prayed for the people to receive the Holy Ghost, he saw them all begin to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance, as the Prophet Isaiah prophesied and what transpired when all the people received the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost. If the Bible redundantly stated everything in it, who could understand it? And how big of a book would it be? And would not everyone that didn t have an ear to hear, be complaining of the redundancy of the book? So what is the gift of divers kinds of tongues and the gift of the interpretation of tongues? Let s first read this passage of scriptures. 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. The topic is the gifts of the Spirit. You have to have received the gift of the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) before you can have any of the spiritual gifts of the Holy Ghost. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. Right here is very important to understand. You have to have received the free gift of the Holy Ghost to have the Spirit!!! The diversities of gifts come from that same Spirit, of which you must have received prior in order for you to receive any of the gifts of the Spirit!! 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Again, you have to have received the Holy Spirit by the evidence of speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance in order to have any of the manifestations of the gifts of that Spirit!!!! 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; If you do not have the Spirit, you can not have any of the gifts of the Spirit. To receive the Holy Spirit you must seek after it!!! (I will cover this in lesson 3 of our series on the Holy Ghost) 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. The gift of divers kinds of tongues is used for the edifying of the Body of Christ. When this gift is in operation it is intended to be interpreted by the gift of the interpretation of tongues. These 2 gifts have nothing to do with a person receiving the Holy Ghost as evidenced with the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance! The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 is identifying the gifts of the Spirit and giving instructions on how to properly use these 9 gifts of the Spirit. You can t have any of these gifts if you don t have the Spirit. And in order for you to receive this Spirit you must seek the Lord for this Spirit and when your receive this Spirit, you will speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance. Just as the Prophet Isaiah prophesied would take place, just like the people on the day of Pentecost when they received the Holy Ghost, as well as all the believers who have received the Holy Ghost. This is why the Apostle Paul stated in: 1 Corinthians 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. The only time the gift of interpretation of tongues is needed is when the gift of divers kinds of tongues is in use.

So how do you know the difference? This answer may be difficult when you first hear it, but when someone begins to use the gift of divers kinds of tongues, the whole Body of Christ present, knows it. Immediately the Spirit of God will quicken inside of you, and you will know to be quiet to listen to what God has for the Church. Now if an interpreter is not present or if the person speaking in divers kinds of tongues is unable to interpret the message, then they are to remain silent. For how is the Body of Christ edified if the message intended for the Church is left without an interpretation? But this has nothing to do with the receiving of the Holy Ghost!!! For the receiving of the Holy Ghost and the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance is how one receives the gift of the Holy Ghost. Thus why the Apostle Paul said, forbid not to speak with tongues! The Gentiles receive the Holy Ghost... Acts 10:34-48 34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and showed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. How did they know???? 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Notice... that was not the end of the Bible study. These people had repented of their sins and while hearing the Word of the Lord received the Holy Ghost and the Apostle Peter knew that was not the end of how you receive salvation s plan. As he was the one who preached the first message. He spoke... 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. He did not command them to be baptized in the titles of the Lord. He commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord!!! Remember the plan of Salvation fulfilled is: (Acts 2:38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The way you are baptized matters!!!!!! To fulfill being baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: you must fulfill what the Apostle Peter has spoken in Acts 2:38. For the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost... is Jesus More evidence of the Holy Ghost not being automatic and the importance of being baptized correctly... Acts 19:1-6 1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Here again we see that they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and it was not until after the Apostle Paul laid hands upon them, that they received the free gift of the Holy Ghost. And again the initial sign of the receiving of the Holy Ghost was the speaking with other tongues, as the Spirit gave the utterance. Even Jesus Christ tells us... Mark 16:17 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; This is because when you receive the Holy Ghost, you will speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gives the utterance. Many false doctrines teach that the Holy Ghost is either a gift only for the early church believers or that the Holy Ghost is automatically given unto you either upon confession of Jesus Christ as your personal savior, or when you repent, or when you are baptized; but as you can now see, the Holy Ghost is a free gift that does not automatically happen, but comes in with the evidence of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. So is the Holy Ghost only a one time experience? Acts 4:1-10; 21-24, 31 1 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. 4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. 5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, 6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; 10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. As the counsel came to a close... 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. 22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was showed. 23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. 24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: And then... 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. We can see clearly here that these believers, which included the Apostle Peter and the Apostle John, who already had been filled with the Holy Ghost; that after they came together and prayed that they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. So,

since they already had the Holy Ghost, we know that they were refilled with the Holy Ghost. The Apostle Paul shows us again that the Holy Ghost is not a one time experience... Titus 3:4-6 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Finally, we also see in Jude... Jude 1:20-21 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. So it is very important to remember that after you receive the Holy Ghost, that you continue to renew this gift of God through prayer and your worship unto God. Now that we better understand what takes place when you receive the free gift of the Holy Ghost, and that the receiving of the Holy Ghost is not a one time experience, as well as the difference between the gift of divers kinds of tongues and the receiving of the Holy Ghost, we will continue our study in our next lesson entitled, How to Receive the Free Gift of the Holy Ghost.
