The Holy Spirit Speaks to a Listening World Part 1 Good morning. We are at the tail end of a sermon series in which we are looking at what it means to be part of the answer to Jesus prayer for unity here at the Barn and beyond so that the world would know Jesus. Three weeks ago Dan introduced the three key components of revival Prayer, Repentance and HS. We have looked at the prayer and repentance components. The next two weeks we are going to look at how the HS speaks to a listening world. Introduction As I became a follower of Jesus, I began to notice that I began to adopt an us vs them mentality those that were saved and those that were not saved / the believers and the unbelievers / those who were on the outside of the faith and those who were on the inside. And there is good foundation for these distinctions. Follower of Jesus are not just those who adopt a set of beliefs, Jesus uses words like this to describe His followers. They are those who: Have passed from death to life Were part of the Kingdom of darkness and are now part of the kingdom of light Had their names written in the book of life whereas others had their names erased from the book of life Were going to heaven / not going to heaven Had the indwelling of Holy Spirit These are stark and very real black and white distinctions. You are either in the kingdom of darkness or the kingdom of light there is no kingdom of gray. So it is easy for us to get caught up in a us vs. them mentality. Maybe you have found yourself thinking in this way, It s understandable. But as we generate labels or we start separating ourselves from those who are not followers of Jesus, we can become isolated from the very people we want to know Jesus. Imagine in my business if I labeled my customers as the good customers / bad customers. Now there are some real things that make the customer bad - those that keep changing their specs or try to nickel and dime our every move but it is not helpful to label them in this way. It wouldn t encourage them to become a good customer by posting a list of our good and bad customers on the web site. This doesn t deny the realities but is just a way to be more winsome. Okay that s my disclaimer. With that in mind I am going to violate that principle over the next two weeks because we are going to talk about one of those very real distinctions. Almost every church / every denomination / Catholic / Orthodox / Protestant world wide believes that the Holy Spirit takes up residence in the believer 1

and that is a black and white distinction. The Holy Spirit does not dwell in someone who is outside the faith. He doesn t partially dwell in others. Jesus made this distinction when he told his disciples. The Holy Spirit is with you but will be in you. 1 Jesus is making a distinction here. Over the next two weeks we are going to look at that distinction. Next week we will look at how the Holy Spirit speaks to those who have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This week we will ask: Does the Holy Spirit speak to non Christians? If so how does he speak? And what are His talking points? Jesus answers to these question may seem simple but I know that as I have reflected on these truths the last few weeks, I know that they will change forever how I look at non-christians. Let s look at our passage today and ask Jesus to speak to us through His word. Let s pray. Scripture John 16:4 The Work of the Holy Spirit I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, Where are you going? 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. Does the Holy Spirit speak to the world? Jesus in our text today tells us that He is sending a Helper who later in vs 13 He calls the Spirit of truth. The Helper is the Holy Spirit. This is a radical transition in the history of man. Jesus is drawing a line in the sand here. I am sending If I do not go away, the Helper / the Holy Spirit will not come to you. Jesus is saying that something brand new is coming your way. And it is a good thing for you. Look at what He says about this Helper. He will convict the world of certain things. Let s just stop there and make sure we know what He is saying. The word that is used here is translated in the New Testament as: He will Convict / expose / reprove / show / rebuke the world of certain things. The definition is - to convince with solid, compelling evidence, especially to expose (prove wrong, correct). So Jesus is saying that He is sending the Holy Spirit / this Helper to convince the world with solid compelling evidence and to expose the things the world is doing wrong. 1 John 14 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 2

Who is the world that He is speaking about? The word John uses here is the Greek word from which we get our English word Cosmos. It is as broad of a word as John could use. Jesus is telling us that the Holy Spirit is sent to speak to the entire world. Peter confirms this on the day of Pentecost when he says that the promised Holy Spirit is poured out on all flesh 2 not just the church. The coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost is such a big deal for the church some call it the birthday of the church it is the day that the Holy Spirit came to dwell in His people it is such a big deal that we forget that the Holy Spirit was sent to speak to non-christians as well. Imagine with me that your boss gave you an assignment to go to someone and to convince with solid compelling evidence that they had done something wrong. But you cannot speak to them or communicate with them in any way. That would be impossible. In the same way, the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus and the Father to communicate to and speak to the world with solid compelling and convincing evidence. Perhaps we get hung up with the word speak if we think it means talking to us with an audible voice. It is rare for the Holy Spirit to speak in an audible voice to Christian or non-christians. I have never heard an audible voice but He does speak to me. And that leads to the question, how does the Holy Spirit speak to the world? Our text doesn t answer the how question. How does the Holy Spirit speak? Here we have to look to other places in the scriptures to find that answer. But rather than giving you a number of scriptures that help us discover the answer, I want us to look to the Westminster Confession. The Westminster Confession attempts to restate what the Bible teaches about a number of important issues. Here at the BARN, we believe that the Westminster Confession faithfully represents what the Bible teaches and we use it to help us understand what the Bible says on these different issues. There are a few areas that we take exception and thankfully in our denomination that is not just acceptable but encouraged. But on the big issues, the Westminster Confession gets it right. Here is what it says the Bible teaches about how the HS speaks He is the Lord 3 and Giver of life, everywhere present, and is the source of all good thoughts 4, pure desires, and holy counsels in men. 5 2 Acts 2 17 I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, 3 2 Corinthians 3 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 4 Ephesians 5:8 Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), Galatians 5 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 5 1 Corinthians 2 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 3

How does the Holy Spirit speak? He puts in our minds / he is the source of all good thoughts. Whenever we have a good thought it is the Holy Spirit who is sourcing that within us. Would you call that speaking? You are thinking about someone and a thought pops into your head about how well they did a particular job. You want to write them a thank you note. The Westminster Confession would say that the source of that thought is the Holy Spirit. I would say that it was the Holy Spirit speaking. When godly and pure counsel comes from a good friend Christian or not, the Westminster Confession says that the Bible teaches us that this comes from the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit speaking. Westminster goes on The dispensation of the gospel is especially committed to him. 6 In other words, the dispensing of the good news about Jesus is His responsibility. Any time a person hears the good news about Jesus, it is the Holy Spirit who is bringing that. It goes on He prepares the way for it, accompanies it with his persuasive power, and urges its message 7 upon the reason and conscience of men, [and women] The Holy Spirit is at work in our neighbors and friends preparing the way for God s good news. And He works through both our neighbor s reason and their conscience. And He does this in power. Let me invite Nick Ciotti up to share how the Holy Spirit prepared the way for God s Good News in his life. Come on up here Nick. Example Nick s Testimony I didn't always believe in God, in fact I considered myself an atheist and thought that there was no God. Now my best friend Sam was a Christian, and he grew up as a Christian, and he wanted me to find God, and God definitely used Sam to help me find him. For probably about 5 years me and Sam would discuss, argue and talk about God. Then one day in February 2010 I went to his house for spring break and he asked me to go to church with him for a "Seek Week", and that was where they just prayed and sought out God a few hours each day for the entire week at the church. So I told him I would go and thought "What's the worst thing that could happen? I find God?". 66 John 16 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 7 John 16 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 4

So I went on Monday and they gave a quick sermon and sang praise, but other than that not much happened. Then we went back on Tuesday February 18th, 2010, and when I went into the church my mind was racing. I was wondering what the people there thought of me, and I felt like I didn't belong there. And I kept asking questions in my head like "How can God know everything? And be everywhere at once?" So I decided to sit down and try and just listen to the music to clear my head. That didn't work. So then I thought "What the heck" and decided to put my hands together, close my eyes and pray. I prayed "God, if you are real, please calm my mind and answer my questions." And I prayed that over and over again, I don't know how many times. Then all of the sudden in my head I saw the room that I was in, and the walls, ceiling and floor just fell away, and the worship music that was playing was gone, and all that was left was white, and my mind was CALM and clear. Then in front of me was this bright golden light in the shape of a person, and I just knew that it was God (later to learn that it was the Holy Spirit). He then reached forward with his right hand and placed it on my chest, and I FELT his hand on my chest. And the second he touched me, all of my questions were answered, and I understood how God knew everything and how he was everywhere at once. I opened my eyes and I could still feel where He touched me, and I knew beyond a doubt that God was real, and my life has never been the same since. When ever I doubt all of this, and wonder "Can this truly be real?" I remember that day, and how I felt God's hand on me, and I know that without a doubt that yes, this is all real! Does the Holy Spirit speak to our non-christian friends and family and co-workers? Absolutely! The Holy Spirit s talking points with the world But Jesus has more to teach us in our text today. Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit s talking points: He tells us that there are three main topics on the Holy Spirit s heart when He speak to our friends and neighbors: About Sin About Righteousness About Coming Judgment About sin When we first read this that Jesus is sending the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin I don t know about you, but my immediate thoughts go to all the areas where we fall short morally, relationally, establishing justice. But look at what Jesus says the Holy Spirit is saying. Because they do not believe in me 5

This isn t just convincing the world to align their set of beliefs with some doctrinal creed it isn t convincing the world to believe a set of facts. As is almost always the case in the gospels, the phrase believing in Jesus is literally believing into Jesus. That is what the text actually says. If you remember my sermon on Easter, when John talks about believing in Jesus he always use the same Greek preposition eis which we normally translate as into. Eis always signifies movement from one place to another just like our preposition into. In every one of the over 1700 cases where the preposition eis is used in the New Testament, it denotes a movement from one place into another place. So for Jesus to say that the Holy Spirit would convince the world about believing in Jesus it is not just convincing the world to believe some facts - He s calling for a movement from one place to another. From a place of independence from God to dependence upon Him. From the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. From death to life. He is saying the Holy Spirit is trying to convince the world to put their whole life / their entire thought patterns / their attitudes into the life of Jesus. About Righteousness The second talking point that the Holy Spirit has with the world is righteousness. In our neighbors and friends, the Holy Spirit is constantly pointing them to the standard of right the standard of goodness the standard of holiness. The Holy Spirit is constantly pointing people to look at Jesus. While Jesus was here on Earth, he was that standard. Now He is going away and so it is the Holy Spirit s job to point people to the pure standard of right Jesus. It is in the face of total goodness and perfection that we are convicted of our own unrighteousness. He doesn t need to point out what we are doing wrong. A few years back, one of our employees said to me: Bob, you have the gift of telling others what they do wrong. Ouch. Is that what I do? Don t answer that. Unfortunately I have seen the unfruitful nature of this particular gif. People don t like to be told when their wrong. I don t. You don t. I cannot remember when I have ever done that and then a Touched by an Angel moment happened when the person saw the error of their ways and turned away from them. Just last week I was biking and a car pulled right out in front of me. I decided to practice my gift and called out to him to watch where he was going and he of course graciously responded. O certainly, fine sir. I will do that from now on. Actually, he looked back and yelled You watch where you re going you BLANK hole. What a great gift to have. I think Jesus is telling us that the Holy Spirit points us to the righteousness of Jesus and let s our conscience connect the dots. I find that the Holy Spirit s way is much more effective. Declare the holy standard of goodness and allow our conscience to moved. About Judgment 6

Finally, Jesus says that the Holy Spirit will be talking to our friends and neighbors about a coming judgment. The Holy Spirit is constantly reminding us and our neighbors that there is coming a day when we will stand before a righteous and holy judge and give account for our lives. What does that look like? Here s what it doesn t look like. You are not going to sit down at Peaburys with them and have them tell you: I m really fearing the coming judgment of God. But it manifests itself with a general uneasiness about the future. Even when things are going well there is a sense with many people that it will all come to an end. A sense that one day the other shoe will drop. You know that feeling because most of us have it. A general sense of dread of the future. That is the Holy Spirit speaking. A sense of an impending dread is a correct feeling without the hope that Jesus gives us. Bridge to Application Jesus is teaching us that He sent His Spirit to speak to the world to our friends and neighbors and co-workers - about believing into Himself / about being all in. About this incredibly high standard of goodness that He calls all men and women to. And about a coming judgment. Application If what Jesus is saying is true / and I believe it is. And if what the Westminster Confession teaches about the ways the Holy Spirit speaks to the world and I believe it does, then how should this affect us. The HS wants people to become followers of Jesus more than you do. He will take the ball and run with it if we would just hand him the ball. Have you ever worked with someone who wants the thing you are working for more than anything else. They are driven and passionate. You don t need to tell them what to do. In many respects you just need to hand them the ball. That is the way it is with the HS. Let me illustrate this. Story of Frank. My summer before my senior year in college, I had been a Christian for about 6 months. I worked as an summer engineering intern at a power plant. I worked with another intern named Frank. As we started working together, we exchanged the obvious kinds of greetings So how was your school year? That was a great opportunity for me to share that I had just become a Christian and to share what had happened to me. While I was doing this there was a janitor named Marcos who was about our age who was a lapsed Pentecostal. He struck up a friendship with Frank and they became drinking buddies. Each night they would get drunk. One night as they were both really drunk, Marcos started telling Frank about the power of the Holy Spirit. Frank responded O no don t tell me about that now. Frank told me the next day about this. I didn t know what to do about it. Here I am trying to tell Frank about a new life in Jesus and here is another guy who had found this new life but had walked away from it. About 2 weeks later, we were sitting in our office across for each other and Frank announced that he had given his life to Jesus the night before. He didn t go out drinking that night with 7

Marcos. He stayed home and in his room he got down on his knees and asked Jesus to come into his life. And Jesus did in marvelous way. What amazed me about this was how the Holy Spirit moved on His own. I am not a sales person I am not one who can close the deal. I never told Frank about getting on his knees and asking Jesus to come into his life. In fact I never said anything about the drinking. I hadn t said anything about the coming judgment but Frank knew that with his O no don t tell me about that He knew that there was a judgment coming. There are those three components of the work of the Holy Spirit. I wasn t involved in any of them. If we are really interested in being part of the Holy Spirit s work on earth today to make Jesus known to our friends and neighbors and co-workers, what can we do to join him in that work? I want to offer one simple prayer for you to offer for your friends and neighbors or coworkers who are not followers of Jesus. It is on your note page. If we really believe that the Holy Spirit is everywhere present and that He is continually at work preparing the way for the good news, continually at work placing good thoughts and pure desires in those around us, our job is to ask the Holy Spirit How you are speaking to my friend / my neighbor / my co-worker. How I can join the conversation. Then start looking for the answer. Looking for that dread - waiting for the other shoe to drop. You can tell them of how you experienced that but how the hope that Jesus gave you has helped you to face that dread. Looking for times when they recognize that they don t measure up to some high standard. You can talk about how you continually don t measure up to God s standard. Looking for times when they offer us holy counsel. Looking for times when they express a pure desire or have a good thought. Those are coming from the Holy Spirit. Ask them That s a great idea. Where do you think that came from? Conclusion Let s close by taking a minute or two to just ask the Holy Spirit these questions. First I want you to think of someone you want to come to Jesus. Then lets ask the Holy Spirit how He is speaking. Let s pray 8
