Montreat Wednesdays, Nov. 29 & Dec. 6 Exploring Advent

John Rogers and Howard Edington will lead us in exploring Advent this year during Montreat Wednesdays. This Wednesday, Nov. 29, John Rogers will lead us on a pilgrimage to the stable of Bethlehem to greet Him whose name is Immanuel - God with Us. He will help us to think together about what it means that we now have God on our hands, as it were. What might this mean as we enter our second decade as Montreat Presbyterian Church? Next Wednesday, Dec. 6, Howard Edington will present The Story We Thought We Knew focusing on Joseph as the Forgotten Man of Christmas and looking at details of the Christmas story which we may have forgotten or have never known. Please join us, 5:00-6:00 P.M. in the Allen Building. All are Welcome! Thursday Morning Bible Study Thursday, Nov. 30, 10:00-11:15 A.M. The Thursday Morning Bible Study on Paul's Letter to the Romans continues this Thursday, Nov. 30 in the Swannanoa Room (Allen Building, 304 Lookout Road). All, including new visitors, are welcome! The series continues on December 7 and concludes on December 14. Volunteers Needed for SVCM Homeless Shelter Jan. 7-13, 2018 Winter has already arrived here in the Swannanoa Valley and with it comes some very cold night. In order to address the needs of the homeless during these nights the SVCM has opened the shelter at the First Baptist Church. Our church as in past years has been asked to furnish meals for the week o f Jan. 7-13. We will be asking volunteers to help with three meals a day during this week. Within the next two weeks you will have an opportunity to

sign up. The need this year is even greater than in the past so we will need you help. Alternative Christmas Gifts With Christmas just around the corner we will be offering Alternative Christmas gift cards again this year. Starting the first of December you will have the opportunity to purchase gift cards for: SWCM HALO cards for $10, Children & Friends cards for $15 and Solar Light for Bayonnais students for $40. Sunday Worship for Advent 1: The Hanging of the Greens Our worship service on the First Sunday in Advent (December 3) will be a traditional service called The Hanging of the Greens, during which scripture, music, and spoken meditations illuminate the faithful purposes and scriptural origins of the visual ornamentation of Advent and Christmas. Those with speaking or other parts will have a practice runthrough this Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10:00 A.M. in. A chorale of voices to provide four-part harmonies for the anthem "No Wind at the Window" (Hymn 111 in Glory to God) will practice this Saturday morning, Dec. 2 after the rehearsal - around 11:00 A.M. The all-volunteer chorale is open to all singers who can join us for practice on Saturday, and will be called upon again for two anthems on Sunday, Dec. 17. Poinsettia Orders It is time once again to place orders for Poinsettias that will be placed in the sanctuary close to Christmas. As always, you may choose to give one in Honor or Memoriam of someone special. Special order forms will be available in the next two Sunday services or you may click here to download a copy. You may place the form with payment in an offering envelop on Sunday or mail to the office (PO Box 577, Montreat, NC 28757). Each plant is $10. Please fill out one form per plant and remember to designate in honor or in memoriam, so we may be sure to honor your wishes

for your Poinsettias. The deadline to order is December 16. Jesse Tree Advent Devotional The Jesse Tree Advent Activity for the Whole Family The Jesse Tree is often used as an Advent Devotional to remember the Mighty Acts of God. There is a story for each day during Advent. Please adapt the Jesse Tree Advent Devotional to enhance your participation in Advent. The Jesse Tree scriptures provide a schedule for personal and family devotions as we turn our attention to how God comes into our lives in unexpected ways. The ornaments provide an Advent activity for all ages. Many adults, as well as children, enjoying coloring the ornaments, gluing them on cardboard or felt backing, and hanging them on a tree limb or their Christmas tree. Others use the ornaments as an Advent Calendar, placing one on a felt wall hanging each day. The Jesse Tree Christmas Tradition was started in the Middle Ages. The first Jesse Trees were carvings, tapestries, or stain glass windows, used to help illiterate people learn the Bible stories from Creation to the Birth of Christ. The Jesse Tree Devotional is available from the Children's Table in worship of can be downloaded here. The ornaments can be found here. These are also available online at www.montreatchurch.org, to share with family and friends. Upcoming Worship Calendar Sun., Dec. 3 9:00 A.M.
