Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and John up into a high mountain to pray. Vs. 2 Mark 9:2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. Vs. 3 Mark 9:3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. Matthew 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.: Luke 9:29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. E. Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus. Vs. 4 Mark 9:4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. Matthew 17:3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Luke 9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: F. Moses and Elijah talked to Jesus about his crucifixion. Luke 9:31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

Page 3 of 9 G. Peter wanted to build three tabernacles. Vs. 5-6 Mark 9:5-6 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid. Matthew 17:4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. Luke 9:32-33 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. H. A bright cloud covered them, and God spoke to them. Vs. 7 Mark 9:7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. Matthew 17:5-6 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. Luke 9:34-35 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

Page 4 of 9 35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. I. Moses and Elijah disappeared in the cloud. Vs. 8 Mark 9:8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves. Matthew 17:7-8 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. Luke 9:36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. J. They were not to tell what they had seen till after Jesus was raised from the dead. Vs. 9 Mark 9:9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. Matthew 16:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. K. The disciples did not understand about the resurrection of Jesus. Vs. 10 Mark 9:10 And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

Page 5 of 9 II. What is the purpose of the transfiguration? A. That the disciples would see an illustration of the kingdom of God come with power before they died. Vs. 1 Mark 9:1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. Matthew 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Luke 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. B. Peter, James and John would see an illustration of the power of the resurrected body of Moses and the transformed bodies of Elijah and Jesus. C. The transfiguration is an illustration of the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:16-18 16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

Page 6 of 9 D. The transfiguration is an illustration of the Rapture. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. E. Moses illustrates the resurrection of the saved at the time of the Rapture. 1. Moses was buried by God. Deuteronomy 34:5-6 5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day. 2. Michael the archangel got the body of Moses as it was raised by God. Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. F. Elijah illustrates the transfiguration of the saved who are alive at the Rapture. 1. Elijah did not die, but was taken by God. 2 Kings 2:1, 11 1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and

Page 7 of 9 parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 2. The saved that are alive at the Rapture will be changed (transfigured). 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. III. What about Elijah? A. The disciples asked Jesus Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? Vs. 11 Mark 9:11 And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? Matthew 16:10

Page 8 of 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? B. Jesus answered that Elijah shall come. Vs. 12 Mark 9:12 And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. Matthew 16:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. C. Elijah will come twice. Malachi 4:5-6 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. 1. Before the great day of the Lord which is the first coming of Christ. Malachi 4:5 2. Before the dreadful day of the Lord which is the second coming of Christ. Malachi 4:5 D. Elijah is already come before the great day of the Lord. Vs. 13 Mark 9:13 But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. Matthew 16:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. E. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. Matthew 16:13 1. Jesus said that John the Baptist is Elijah.

Page 9 of 9 Matthew 11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. IV. The powerlessness of the disciples. Vs. 14-29 A. The disciples could not cast out a dumb spirit out of a man s son. Vs. 14-18 B. They brought the man s son to Jesus. Vs. 19-22 C. Jesus told the father that all things are possible if he would believe. Vs. 23 D. The father said he believed and wanted Jesus to help his unbelief. Vs. 24 E. Jesus cast the dumb spirit out of the man s son. Vs. 25-27 F. The disciples asked why they could not cast out the dumb spirit. Vs. 28 G. And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Vs. 29 V. Jesus speaks of his death. Vs. 30-32 VI. Who is the greatest? Vs. 33-35 VII. Whosoever receives a child in the name of Jesus receives Jesus. Vs. 36-37 VIII. Who is on the side of Christ? Vs. 38-41 IX. Do not offend a child that believes in Jesus. Vs. 42 X. Horrible torment in Hell. Vs. 43-50 A. Avoid any sin that would put you in hell. 43, 45, 47 B. Eternal fire in hell. Vs. 43-48 C. Eternal worms of decay in hell. Vs. 44, 46, 48 D. Everyone in hell will be salted with fire. Vs. 49-50
