THE BOOK OF ISAIAH THE GOD OF OUR SALVATION ISAIAH CHAPTER 28:1-29 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER WN-672 AUGUST 17, 2016 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: This Is Going To Hurt Me More Than It s Going To Hurt You Discovering the Salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Prophecies of Isaiah Part 2 SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Israel s Hope, The Millennium, King Jesus, Israel, Restoration. Introduction to the Text; Isaiah 28:1-29 Here in Chapters 28 to 33 makes up a new section of both historical judgments and future judgments regarding Gods people, Israel. In the chapters ahead of us we will hear of the opening warning from God when He announces His Woe s. Isaiah 29:1 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! The Hebrew word is Howy or hoh-ee Matthew 11:21-23a Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, (Woe) Capernaum, ouai, oo-ah -ee; grief be on you. condemnation be on you. But there are also some comforting verses here 1

in chapter 28, As God is reminding His children that His discipline is specifically reserved for His own children. God never disciplines children that are not His. Which should cause us to be encouraged whenever God disciplines us as believers. Hebrews 12:5-8 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives. :7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. God s Love is not a weak, enabling kind of love. Psalm 118:18-20 The LORD has chastened me severely, But He has not given me over to death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them, And I will praise the LORD. 20 This is the gate of the LORD, Through which the righteous shall enter. This Is Going To Hurt Me, More Than It Is Going To Hurt You. 1.) guilty of being intoxicated vv. 1-8 1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim (the northern tribes), Whose glorious beauty is a fading flower which is at the head of the verdant valleys, To those who are overcome with wine! historians and archaeologists have confirmed that; the area of Ephraim (Samaria) was quite possibly the most fruitful, beautiful and wealthiest regions in all of Israel at that time. It was this productivity that made Israel wealthy and desirable in the ancient days, and now again today these are modern pictures from last year truly amazing! But they allowed their prosperity to deceive them. They believed that they had become invincible. They believed they had God on their side no matter what. They believed that they had become responsible for all of the good that had come to them in a word, they have forgotten God! 2

Tragically, that s an easy cycle to get lost in because; Prosperity fathers leisure. Leisure births complacency, and complacency s siblings are resentment & apathy. Verse 2-6 2 Behold, the Lord has a mighty and strong one, Like a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, Like a flood of mighty waters overflowing, Who will bring them down to the earth with His hand. 3 The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, Will be trampled underfoot; 4 And the glorious beauty is a fading flower which is at the head of the verdant valley, Like the first fruit before the summer, Which an observer sees (some stranger walking by plucks it off) ; He eats it up while it is still in his hand. (Insert of Hope) 5 In that day the LORD of hosts will be For a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the remnant of His people (Israel), 6 For a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, And for strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate. 7 But they also have erred through wine, And through intoxicating drink are out of the way; The priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink, They are swallowed up by wine, They are out of the way through intoxicating drink; They err in vision, they stumble in judgment. 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filth; No place is clean. 1 Samuel 2:30b NIV Those who honor Me I will honor, but those who despise Me will be disdained. God would have to discipline them because they were guilty of being intoxicated This Is Going To Hurt Me, More Than It Is Going To Hurt You. 2.) guilty of being unteachable vv. 9-13 9 Whom will he teach knowledge? (they say will Isaiah teach us again?) And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts? 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little. (they say will Isaiah teach us again?) 3

Isaiah was told by them to stop talking to us like we were little kids But in reality, they were spiritual pygmy s (Africa). Since Israel refused to simply listen to God, they will be placing themselves in the way of an on-coming invasion as the strange language of a foreign people would soon be speaking to them, the voice of the Assyrians would unsettle and confuse the jews. Verse 11-13 11 (now Isaiah speaks for God) For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, 12 To whom He said, This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest, And, This is the refreshing ; Yet they would not hear. 13 But the word of the LORD was to them, Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little, (again Isaiah, really another chapter of this) (now Isaiah speaks for God) That they might go and fall backward, and be broken And snared and caught. Luke 13:34-35 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! The Tender Heart of God toward Teaching us His Word. He bears up with us / He waits for us / He sends us word and warning This Is Going To Hurt Me, More Than It Is Going To Hurt You. 3.) guilty of being self-confident vv. 14-29 14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scornful men, Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem, 15 Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol (Hell) we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge 4

passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves. You think that by appeasement, he will leave you alone? You think that by making a deal with the devil that he ll leave you alone? Israel s Covenant with Hell Some see here a veiled rebuke to Israel in the future when they will do exactly what s written here. In Daniel Chapter 9 was see Satan s Man engineer the 7 year policy of peace engineered by the Anti-Christ, Satan s Mini Me Verse 16 :16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. Isaiah 8:14 He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem 1 Peter 2:4-9 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame. :7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone, 8 and A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense. They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. :9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 5

Matthew 21:42-44 Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD S doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes? :43 Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. 44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder. Verse 17-19 17 Also I will make justice the measuring line (My Judgment), And righteousness the plummet; The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters will overflow the hiding place. 18 Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it. 19 As often as it goes out it will take you; For morning by morning it will pass over, And by day and by night; It will be a terror just to understand the report. Verse 20-21 20 For the bed (like lies) is too short to stretch out on, And the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in it. Verse 21 21 For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim, (david routs the philly s) He will be angry as in the Valley of Gibeon (josh routs the amorites as the sun stood still) That He may do His work, His awesome work, And bring to pass His act, His unusual (strange) act. unusual (strange) zoor; an odd or queer or foreigner act, a strange, not native work. To not be normal as God would be. (He does not desire the act. He loathes the act) Verse 22-23 22 Now therefore, do not be mockers, Lest your bonds be made strong; For I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts, A destruction (pre)determined even upon the whole 6

earth. (here is the call to hope) 23 Give ear and hear my voice, Listen and hear my speech. Verse 24-29 And Here is a Parable Tucked into a Prophecy. 24 Does the plowman keep plowing all day to sow? (Yep) Does he keep turning his soil and breaking the clods? (Yep) 25 When he has leveled its surface, Does he not sow the black cummin (Yep) And scatter the cummin, Plant the wheat in rows, (Yep) The barley in the appointed place, (Yep) And the spelt in its place? (Yep) 26 For He instructs him in right judgment, His God teaches him. 27 For the black cummin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, Nor is a cartwheel rolled over the cummin; But the black cummin is beaten out with a stick, And the cummin with a rod. 28 Bread flour must be ground; Therefore he does not thresh it forever, Break it with his cartwheel, Or crush it with his horsemen. 29 This also comes from the LORD of hosts, Who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in guidance. So when each of us, when we go out to share the Lord with others, We need to be Spirit-led because One size does not fit all Some people need to hear the grace and the love of God. Some people need to hear of the mercy and tenderness of God. Others need to hear of the wrath and judgment of God. Life measured off from the chief cornerstone!!! Come Upon Us Dear Holy Spirit - Come!!! End of Study Copyright Wednesday, August 17, 2016 by Jack Hibbs 7
