Dear friends and family of Plymouth, The big news as you have already heard is that we ve signed with a contractor, and are having (or have had, depending on when you read this) our groundbreaking ceremony on October 29! Many, many thanks to all the faithful leadership, talent, and dedication of our Leadership Team getting us to this point, and for their future dedication as we go through the construction process. Earlier this month I participated in the Interfaith Prayer Service, which was held at Grace Lutheran. I also offered the educational session after worship to talk about the history and traditions of the United Church of Christ, going back to our roots in the German Reformed Church and the German Evangelical Church in Germany in the 1700s, the Christian Church which began in the U.S. in the 1800s revivalist movement, and our earliest ancestors, the Pilgrims and Puritans of England, who gave us the tradition of Thanksgiving. Compressing 400+ years of history into ten or eleven minutes was a bit of a challenge, but I was able to highlight some of what makes us different and special in the history of the entirety of all church traditions. And speaking of Thanksgiving, it is almost here! As we do each year, we will gather with the other two UCC churches in Eau Claire for a Thanksgiving Eve service. This year it will be at First Congregational UCC, 310 Broadway, at 7 P.M. Gathering together on the night before Thanksgiving had never been part of my tradition until I came here, and over the years I have found it to be a very meaningful time and a favorite worship service to focus on the act of giving thanks to God for all the good in my life in the past year, and all the unexpected blessings. I also have come to appreciate making November a month of giving thanks: offer something to God every day during the month to say Thank you, God, for... whether it be your home, family, a sunset, someone holding a door for you, a surprise phone call. Whatever you are thankful for. Focusing on the blessings I have received has helped me stay connected to God far more than pining away about what I don t have. It s a good spiritual discipline, and since we as Jesus followers are called disciples, having some spiritual disciplines is helpful. May your November be filled with thankfulness: for the start of our rebuilding, and whatever is in your life that you consider to be a blessing! 4
