1 Samuel 8:4-5
So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came 5 to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have. 1 Samuel 8:4-5 (NIV)
But when they said, Give us a king to lead us, this 7 displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but 8 they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so 9 they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights. 1 Samuel 8:6-9 (NIV)
He said, This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will 12 run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment 13 for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 1 Samuel 8:11-13 (NIV)
He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage 16 and give it to his officials and attendants. Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and 17 donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 1 Samuel 8:14-17 (NIV)
But the people refused to listen to Samuel. No! they 20 said. We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles. When Samuel heard all that the people said, he 22 repeated it before the Lord. The Lord answered, Listen to them and give them a king. 21 1 Samuel 8:19-22 (NIV)
There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of 2 Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else. 1 Samuel 9:1-2 (NIV)
1 Samuel 9-10: Saul Becomes King 9:15-17 Selection by the Lord 10:1 A secret anointing by Samuel 10:2-16 Confirmation by signs 10:17-24 Public selection 10:24 Received by the people
Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed 16 this to Samuel: About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me. When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people. 1 Samuel 9:15-17 (NIV) 17
As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, Tell the servant to go on ahead of us and the servant did so but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God. Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul s head and kissed him, saying, Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance? 1 1 Samuel 9:27-10:1 (NIV)
Saul s Kingship affirmed by fulfillment of three signs: 1. Two men meet him at Rachel s tomb to tell him his father s donkeys are safe (I Samuel 10:2) 2. Three men meet him at Bethel to offer him bread (I Samuel 10:3-4) 3. A group of prophets will meet at Gibeah with whom Saul will prophesy (I Samuel 10:5-6)
Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord 18 at Mizpah and said to them, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt 19 and all the kingdoms that oppressed you. But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, No, appoint a king over us. So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans. 1 Samuel 10:17-19 (NIV)
They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, Do you see the man the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people. Then the people shouted, Long live the king! 1 Samuel 10:23-24 (NIV)
They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others. Samuel said to all the people, Do you see the man the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people. 24 Then the people shouted, Long live the king! 1 Samuel 10:23-24 (NIV) Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against 5 him. When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, Here is the man! As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, Crucify! Crucify! John 19:4-6 (NIV) 6
Jesus is the only King that can satisfy our longing hearts.
