Experiencing God as Jehovah God s Path to Freedom Exodus 6:1-9 1 But the LORD said to Moses, Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land. 2 God spoke to Moses and said to him, I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD. 9 Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery. We have been meeting God by His many names though which He has chosen to introduce Himself and reveal Himself to us. From His name we learn aspects about the personality of God. Elohim - The Personality of God El Elyon - The Position of God El Roi - The Perception of God El Olam - The Permanence of God El Shaddai - The Power of God Adonai - The Place of God in our lives The names of God reveal the character and attributes of God to us that we might truly know Him. There are over 700 different descriptions of God in the Bible. Elohim God This name speaks of His Personality (He is all we need, He has all we need and He is doing all we need done.) Genesis 1 El Elyon God The Most High God This name speaks of His Position (He is both Sovereign and Supreme in Position and Power.) Genesis 14:17-20

El Roi - He is the God Who Sees. This name speaks of His Perception Genesis 16:13-15 El Olam The Everlasting God This name speaks of His Permanence Genesis 21:33 El Shaddai The Almighty God This name speaks of His Power in our Lives Genesis 17 Adonai Lord This name speaks of His Place in Our Lives Genesis 15 Psalms 9:10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You. Today we come to the name of God that is used most often in the scriptures The name Jehovah. Used 6,823 times in the OT. Over 700 times in the Psalms. Elohim, the first name we met God by is used 2,570 times. My prayer today is that this will be the day that you enter into a living relationship with Him. If there is a name by which you should know God above every other name, I believe it would be this name Jehovah. Now the name Jehovah is filled with meaning. In our English Bible it is either translated LORD or GOD when used with Adonai Jehovah (Lord GOD). It is also pronounced Yahweh. This name comes from the Hebrew verb hayah, which signifies to be or to become. When translated in the first person, it becomes as in Exodus 3:14 - I Am, said twice. I Am that I Am The name LORD, therefore, points to the God who is continuously becoming the Self-Existing One. Actually we can t really be sure of the pronunciation of this name. In the original Hebrew there were no vowel and only consonants that we transliterated into English as JHVH or YHWH. The vowels were developed later from pronunciation marks. Out of reverence to this name, this awesome and precious name of God, the devout Jews would not even pronounce it. Whenever the Jews were writing or copying the scriptures and they would come to this name they would put down the pen or the writing instrument down they were using, and pick up another one, then they would destroy that one never to be used again. So when you see the name LORD in your Bible it where they would have put these letters for Yahweh or Jehovah. JHVH or YHWH

Certainly that name which God would want you to understand the most but which most of us understand the least, is the Name Jehovah! Three Issues we learned a couple weeks ago about meeting God as Jehovah. The Importance of Knowing God as Jehovah An Illustration of knowing God as Jehovah when they would use or not use that name The Impact that knowing God by this name will have on our lives how you conduct your life, your business. What is bound up in this name? The Importance of The Name Jehovah Genesis 2 and 3 Why is it important to us to know God by this name Jehovah? Up to this point in scripture and in our study of the names of God, by and large by which of the names we have met God have to do with what He does in this world. Elohim The Creator God the One who has all and is doing all.. El Elyon The Sovereign God who rules over the affairs of nations. El Roi The God Who Sees El Shaddai The Powerful God Who Provides Adonai He is Lord, He directs the business of our lives You see what a person does springs out of what a person is and this name Jehovah speaks about the Essence of God Who God Is. Jehovah His personal name He never changes. I am the eternally self-existent one. The One Who always has been The One Who always will be And who right now is always the same God never changes Now, other s people conduct will change but God s conduct will never change Other s people s character will change but God s character will never change. Other s people consistency may change but God s consistency or dependability will never change. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever Jesus I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end It is God s way of saying I never change. Malachi 3:6 I am the LORD thy God, I change not. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

The most certain fact in all of your life The most certain fact in all eternity The most certain fact in all the world Is that God is what He always has been and will never change! And what He is right now, He always will be!!!! He is absolutely consistent He does not change And that is what the name Jehovah, Yahweh means! God is always Perfect God is always Holy God is always Righteous God is always Just God is always Love Whatever God has been in the Bible and to other men throughout history, God will be that to us! God is perfect He is perfect in His unchanging nature!!!! I Am that I Am!!!! The Eternal God The Self-Existing One When you really get to know and experience God as Jehovah you will be able to solve any problem that you face! Has to do with the unchanging nature of God! God operates according to Principle There is no need or issue that you have or face that God does not have a principle in His Word specific principle which you should follow to your response to that need. Most things we face in life we don t need to make a decision God already has a principle to follow and we can chose to follow and obey His Word or chose to disobey and suffer the consequences. Years ago I heard a message on making decisions people drive themselves crazy with a million little decisions every day But If you will make a few major decisions about God and His Word and your submission to that Word You pre-decide to obey God s Word about church Don t have to decide late Saturday night or Sunday morning if you will go to church. Family issues Financial issues Job issues civic issues (how and who to vote for) personal and relational issues. Principles in God s Word will guide you It has to do with the unchanging nature of God He will not change His principles about anything Does not matter the circumstances.. A principle is a principle is a principle is a principle! Because, a principle in scripture is that which is born out of the heart of God.

If God were to ever change, his principles might change but He is never going to change! Every principle that God shares with us in the Word of God is valid for all eternity!!!! So, if you have an issue or problem facing you, be assured in the Word of God there is a principle you can follow to deal with that issue!!!! You don t have to wonder if that principle will work it will always work!!!! Because the Holy God always stands as the enforcer of His principles and the blessor of those who obey and live by them!!!!! The Importance of knowing God as Jehovah He is an unchanging God absolute righteous and just and holy and perfect in all His ways forever!!!! Exodus 6 Notice two things.. 1. Jehovah God Always Protects His Name We are talking about the perfection of God He is always going to do what He has promised and what is right! 1 But the LORD said to Moses, Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land. 2 God spoke to Moses and said to him, I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. Now here is what we know from Scripture. Adam and Eve had met God as Jehovah. Genesis 3 and 4: I have gotten a son by Jehovah When they rebelled against God the vision of Jehovah begin to wain to vanish There are certain conditions by only which He will reveal Himself to you as Jehovah. As sin progressed in the history of man. But God as Jehovah withdrew this revelation of Himself to men, even to Abraham, Issac and Jacob They knew God as El Elyon, El Shaddai Why, Because knowing God as Jehovah has certain requirements. Remember when Exodus 6 was written about Moses after 40 years in desert and has been sent to deliver the people of Israel who are in bondage in Egypt. Pharaoh did not let them go

Now in Exodus 6 even the leaders of Israel And then God makes this statement that the people of Israel have never know Him as Jehovah. Two observations: The requirements to know God as Jehovah You will never know God as Jehovah if you have no desire from personal and moral holiness You Must have a desire to be Holy God says, Be Holy for I Am Holy! And some of us want to be Holy. Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: But it is possible that many of us have never really considered what it means to be a holy person of God and is willing to pursue that! Doesn t brother you to do things that dishonor the Word of God cussing, telling dirty jokes You will not know God as Jehovah you will not have the freedom to live a holy and Godly life that brings glory to His name More than just moral purity More than that to have a desire to be shut up to God Great movements that changed the course of history started with men like John Wesley Martin Luther. Men who were consumed with a desire to know God and please Him Men like Jim Elliot A desire to be God s man, God s woman I want to be Holy!!!!! Separated living.. Something that is missing today.. If you are not changed you are not saved. Not just backslidden or carnal God spanks His children Hebrews 12 Separated living Holy living. A heart for God!!!!! A desire to please the Lord more than anything else. God has called us to be different!!!!!!! You will never know God as Jehovah without a desire to be holy. 2. You must have a determination to be Holy

Some of us are willing to be holy if God would just give it to us.. We are not willing to fight the battle gain the victory over the world the flesh and devil!!!!! We just want to wake up one day and feel like that God has made us holy. It took Moses 40 years in the wilderness.. It took the nation of Israel 40 years in the wilderness. Do you have a desire and a determination to be holy? No matter what the cost is. God protects His name.. Next: 2. Jehovah Proves His Name. The other names of God has to do with what God does This name has to do with who God is.. Exodus 6: 1. He proves it by the precision by which He keeps His covenant. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. Genesis 15:13-14 13 Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 400 years later, God is speaking to Moses Exodus 6 God said, I have remembered my covenant God proved His name by doing exactly what He said He would do. God does His will He fulfills His Promises He keeps His word You agree with Him that His word is right and believe. Other 2. By the persistence by which He convey His concern. He is perfect in His righteousness. But He is also prefect in His mercy and love When God heard the groaning of the people. He provided a way of redemption and reconciliation

Question: Do I know God as Jehovah.. What His declares He is, is exactly what God is!!!! Some final Issues Do you possess the name of Jehovah? Must have a determination to be Holy Jehovah Proves His Name This name has everything to do with Who God Is. He is not a two-bit god with the pagan gods He Proves it by the Precision by which He keeps His Covenant Some here today are insensitive Some here today are indifferent Some here today are interested Founding Fathers Were willing to die to give their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. to be free. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The pursuit of happiness. Or blessedness. They knew came from Matthew 5 Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are the meek Meant to pursue God!!!!!!! You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed!!!! Some here today are desperate to really know the Lord tired of being a slave to sin, to self and the devil!!!! You want to be free to worship the Lord You want to be free
