St. Anselm s Parish is a Catholic community formed by families, individuals and clergy that worship together, celebrate the sacramental life of the Church, and seek to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ everyday. We welcome, serve, and educate.

Dear Parishioners, Epiphany is a beautiful celebration. For the first time Jesus is revealed to people who are not Jews. This celebration brings everybody together. It tells us that every human being shares in the same inheritance as a son or daughter of God. The celebration tells us that Jesus was born for everyone. That does not mean that the barriers that divide people have disappeared. We still see divisions in the world, divisions that are based on race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, gender and wealth. All these divisions reflect also the separation that exists between people and God. As Christians we are all called to bring about love and healing. May all of us work to build a world free from all division, exploitation, war and violence. Next weekend Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will be making his pastoral visit to our parish. He will arrive on Saturday 9 th of January and will confirm our young people at the 5.00 pm Mass. He will celebrate the Sunday morning 10.00 am Mass and during the Eucharistic Celebration he will install me as the Pastor of St Anselm Church. On Monday he will celebrate a School Mass at 9:00 am and will visit our School. Please offer him a warm welcome! I am sure that you all had a wonderful Christmas, that you were able to celebrate it with your family and friends! I would like to thank you for your generosity to your church during the Christmas season! Let me wish you all a Happy New Year! May the New Year be a year of many blessings! Fr. Jose Shaji, Pastor LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES Appearances can be deceiving, as the saying goes. As we celebrate the epiphania, the appearing of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is still true. What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives. We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. What Can You Do to Help End Human Trafficking? Sr. Judy Lu McDonnell O.P. and Ms. Lyn Kirkconnell, members of the Stop Slavery Coalition and veterans in the fight against human trafficking will be here in Centennial Hall on Weds., Jan. 13 th, 7:30pm to help answer that question. They will share reflections on their fight against the broad issue of human trafficking which encompasses forced labor in restaurant operations, hotels, domestic help, sweatshops as well as sexual exploitation. The Super Bowl will be in Santa Clara in 2016. Large sporting events likely give rise to an increase in human trafficking for labor as well as for commercial sex. As of 2012, over 40% of California s human trafficking occurs right here in the Bay Area. Their current efforts include working to help hotel managers and staffs in Bay Area cities learn to identify and report incidents of human trafficking. Join us to hear how you can help to end human trafficking in our community. LITTLE MINUTES Little drops of water, little grains of sand, make the mighty ocean and the pleasant land; so the little minutes, humble though they be, make the mighty ages of eternity. Julia A. Fletcher Carney Stop by the parish office in January to pick up a copy of the Pope s Encyclical, Laudato Si. If you are interested in joining a group to discuss it, come to a meeting on January 4 at 7:00 pm in Centennial Hall. To help launch the extraordinary Year of Mercy, Deacon Bob Meave will be leading a group reading and discussing Pope France s book The Church of Mercy. An initial meeting will be held on January 11 at 7:00 pm in the parish office. On January 13 we will have two extraordinary speakers address the issue of Human Trafficking. The month concludes with a presentation by Fr. Joe Eagan, who will be speaking on developments during Pope Francis papacy, including what may be expected from the Synod on the Family. More info to come.

Our Adult Faith Formation Class Begins Again on February 1 st! We will be using: Jesus is the Anointed One the ultimate priest, prophet and king foreshadowed throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. Join us as we deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ through Bishop Robert Barron s DVD-based Study Program: Priest, Prophet, King. Explore the biblical archetypes of priest, prophet and king and see how Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of each one. Throughout this experience, you will better understand who Jesus really is and also realize your own priestly, prophetic and kingly mission. News of St. Anselm Parish St. Anselm Confirmation Program Pope Francis recently said, Confirmation unites us more firmly to Christ. It strengthens our relationship with the Church, and it gives us a special strength from the Holy Spirit to defend the faith and confess the name of Christ. It is this grace from Christ that our Confirmation Program at St. Anselm prepares our young people to receive. The Program at St. Anselm is designed specifically for freshmen, but open to all in high school. Candidates for Confirmation begin their year-long preparation in February of their freshman year of high school. Classes and preparation last until January/February when they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, conferred by a Bishop. The core of our Program consists of home lessons where children are broken up into small groups and attend catechetical lessons at parents homes, usually including a dinner. These home lessons occur following the 5PM Mass where the candidates attend together. They also attend two Day of Reflections as well as an all-day retreat that is run by a Capuchin priest, Fr. Christopher Iwancio. This year we have 34 confirmandi and on January 9 th, at the 5PM Mass, they will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation by Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone. We are also blessed to have three amazingly talented catechists in Lisa Leavitt, Elena Barbagelata and Cheryl Newell. These three women, who are also parents of confirmandi, devote their time and talent in preparing our candidates and sharing their faith with our parish youth. Simply put - without their generosity of faith and energy, there would be no Confirmation Program. We are truly blessed by their ministry. -Nicholas Case, Director of Religious Education Most Rev. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone at a Confirmation in April, 2015.
