As we grow closer to the cross we know that someday our Lord will call us home. In an ever growing and changing climate of medical research, technology, and advancements, often it can be difficult to understand what everything means. When it comes to our lives and embracing the gift of others, we certainly want to cherish every moment and hold each and every stage, from conception to natural death sacred. In the flurry of carrying for ourselves and loved ones though, it can be difficult discerning decisions in an ever growing secular world. As everyone will at some point in their lives be making these decisions, the Wisconsin Bishops have wanted to aid us ensuring that our wishes and values are carried out. To help us, they have composed an addendum that we may add to our Power of Attorney for Health Care forms that many of us have routinely filled out prior to major medical experiences. This addendum tries to do is to provide clarity and distinction to uphold our human dignity as made in God s image and likeness. I would encourage anyone who has filed a POAHC form or has helped someone else complete one to prayerfully consider adding this addendum to uphold the dignity and sacredness of life. This is meant to legal protect the dignity and the sacredness of your life which we all deserve being God s sons and daughters. Like any legal document, we encourage you read it thoroughly and ask questions about it. After all, the Bishops in their letter state: No one tool can provide certainty, nor replace the vital conversations that must occur between loved ones. However, this addendum, designed for use with the Wisconsin Power of Attorney for Health Care (POAHC) document, can help you communicate your desires in a manner consistent with our Catholic faith. While this document incorporates the principles of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, any Catholic utilizing the addendum should read through it and the Wisconsin POAHC carefully so as to fully comprehend what each provision asserts. You can view the addendum online at www.wisconsincatholic.org, click on the link for Power of Attorney for Healthcare Addendum link or stop by our office and pick up at printed copy.
