Mustard Seed Children s Lesson Summary for November 8, 2009 Released on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 A Chosen People Lesson Text: 1 Peter 2:1-10 Background Scripture: 1 Peter 2:1-17 Memory Verse: Shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). 1 Peter 2:1 10 1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. THE OBJECT IN VIEW: As God's chosen people, believers have received rich blessings. TRUTHS TO STRESS: 1. The Lord is good to us. 2. We should desire to learn about Him. 3. God has saved us so that we can tell others how good He is. PLANNING LESSON AIDS: For Helping to Remember, for each child bring a half sheet of dark construction paper. Also provide a "spotlight" shape made by drawing a 3-inch or larger circle at the right side of a piece of yellow or other light-colored construction paper. From

a point about 4 inches to the left of the circle, draw a line to the top of the circle (tangent) and another to the bottom. Cut out one for each student. Also bring pencils or markers and glue. TEACHER S NOTES: Time: A.D. 63 Place: from Babylon (most likely Rome) First Peter 2 reminds us of our blessings as God's chosen people. As babies desire milk, Christians should desire to learn the Bible's teachings about God and how to live for Him so that their spirits can grow. We are living stones in God's church, and Jesus is the church's cornerstone, its first and best part. Jesus fulfilled His part superbly. Our hope in Christ will not be disappointed; but are we fulfilling our responsibilities to Him? Like a builder who rejected a cornerstone but then tripped over it, those who refuse to accept Jesus as their Saviour will not receive blessings from God now or through eternity. God has chosen us to tell about the wonderful things He has done for us so that others will receive eternal blessings. God has remedied our ignorance and saved us in His mercy! BEGINNING THE LESSON "I like being in the spotlight," Lee said after practicing for the school Thanksgiving play. "Everybody will be looking at me; so I have to memorize my lines." "You are good!" said Lee's brother, Thomas. "At practice I almost forgot that it was you and not Governor William Bradford declaring that there would be a day of giving thanks and three days of feasting in Plymouth Colony." "Thank you, Thomas," Lee replied. "I really want to make people remember William Bradford. He was a great and godly man." TELLING THE LESSON The Apostle Peter wrote a letter that praises God and helps us remember our blessings as people whom God has chosen. Peter wrote that those who have recently trusted in Jesus are like babies, who desire to drink milk that makes them grow. Like them, new Christians should desire to learn all that the Bible tells them about God and how to live for Him so that their spirits can grow. They have to learn to stop doing things that God would never do things like hurting people, tricking them, and saying bad things about them. Christians are also like stones. It takes many stones to build a big church building where God is worshiped. Likewise, it takes all those people who have ever believed in Jesus to make God's church. The cornerstone is the first and greatest stone in many large buildings. Jesus is like a cornerstone because He is the first and best part of God's church. We could say that God's church is alive because it is made up of living people. That is why Jesus is called a living stone. Since God's church will never be destroyed, believers will never be ashamed to be part of it. Jesus will do good things for them, and He will indeed take them to heaven. Once there was a builder who threw away a cornerstone, but then he tripped over it and hurt himself. That is like people who do not want Jesus and do not obey what God says. Because they refuse to accept Jesus as their Saviour, they do not receive blessings from God and do not go to heaven. God has chosen us His church to be like a nation of people who belong to Him. He chose us because He wants us to tell about the wonderful things He has done for us. He

loved us and made us His people. We deserved to be punished, but He had mercy and forgave us. How wonderful God is! TELLING HOW TO LIVE God has saved us so that we can tell others how good He is. When they hear about Him, some of them will believe in Him too. Then they will have joy in their hearts on earth and life forever in heaven. What could be better than that? You can teach younger children what you have heard in Sunday school. You can ask adults to listen to the Bible verses that you have learned. You can do what the Bible tells you to do, and that will show people that Jesus has changed your life and can change their lives too. HELPING TO REMEMBER Give each child a half sheet of dark construction paper and a prepared "spotlight" shape. Have the children glue the "spotlight" onto the paper and draw a stick figure of Jesus in the spotlight. Print or have the children print "I can show Jesus to others." Remind them that their words of praise and acts of obedience can help others come to know and love Jesus too. EXPLAINING THE MEMORY VERSE "Shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light" (1 Peter 2:9). There was a time when we could not see or understand anything about God, as if we were in a very dark place, but now it is as if Jesus turned on the lights. He gave us the ability to know Him and understand why He created us. God is wonderful and deserves to be praised. You can show others how wonderful He is by telling who He is and what He has done for you. Then be like Him. Do good things to show Him how thankful you are. PRAYER: Dear God, we thank You for chosing us on the basis of Your mercy. Thank You for giving us hope as a new people who can display Your nature to the world, in Jesus name. Amen. ANTICIPATING THE NEXT LESSON: Next week s lesson is A Suffering People. Peter denied Christ out of fear but later told believers to glorify God when they suffer for His sake. Study 1 Peter 4:12-19.
