Blacks at a Glance On June 19, 1910, a Father's Day observance was celebrated through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a church sermon in 1909 about the newly rerrecognized Mother's Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition, as well. It took many years to become official, but in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers and designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day became a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. On this Father s Day, it is important to lift up all fathers who are doing what is right in the sight of God for their children, families, and communities. So many great dads are strong providers, nurturers, and loving fathers and we applaud you. In 2014 a Study reported that Black American fathers were in many instances more involved with their kids on a day to day basis than fathers from other racial groups. And for the last two decades, the trend of more responsible and accountable Black American fathers has been steadily growing. Let s take the time to salute and celebrate our fathers, grandfathers, greatgrandfathers, father-like mentors and role models who have given and done so much toward the advancement and empowerment of us all. We Love You and May God Bless You All!
