Civil Source Civil Engineers Make the Difference They Build on the Quality of Life s Message ASCE Utah Section Newsletter By Bob Davis, PE Each year ASCE holds their statewide Annual in May. This is a special April Photo: Future construction engineers learn all about what the world of construction event where has to offer at the Utah Construction Career Days, sponsored by the Southern Utah Branch members from in Washington County. This photo was submitted by Brett Jensen, president-elect. across the State meet together. An influential engineer or well known speaker is invited to address us. Newly elected ASCE Branch and Section officers are sworn into office. A field tour of an engineering project of interest is conducted after the luncheon. This year is no exception. We are excited to announce that Friday, May 18, 2007 will be the ASCE Annual in Utah. The luncheon will be held at Thanksgiving Point in Utah County at noon. We are very excited that regional and national officers of ASCE have been invited to speak with us to give us their perspective on the engineering profession. Election results for Utah Branch and Section officers will be announced and the newly elected officers will be welcomed. Following the Annual a tour of the almost completed $200 million Metropolitan Water District Point of the Mountain Water Treatment Plant will be held. This is a great opportunity to spend some time furthering your education of the engineering profession and meeting with some great people. Watch for more details on the web site and in Civil Source. I hope to see you all there. Bob Davis ASCE Utah Section

Brandon, along with a representative from Sandy City, will discuss a politically charged land development project, Quarry Bend. The project includes the development of two big-

box stores as well as parks, housing and several smaller out parcels. The project went through a very public rezoning process and is now under construction. ASCE Utah Section Newsletter Additionally, we are now accepting nominations for officers of the ASCE Wasatch Front Branch. Positions open for the 2007/2008 year are Secretary/Treasurer and Elect. If you are interested, please submit a statement of interest along with a bio to be included in the ballot. Please get your submittals to Cathy Romero by April 6, 2007. Wasatch Front Branch Central Utah Branch The Southern Utah Branches of ASCE and APWA sponsored a spring conference on February 7-9, 2007. The conference theme was "Quantum Leap". The keynote speaker for the event was LaVell Edwards. We had more attendance and more vendor participation than ever before. Proceeds from the conference will go to a yearly $1000 scholarship at Dixie State College for both ASCE and APWA (a total of $2000). The Central Utah Branch will have its April luncheon on Thursday, April 19th at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Orem. Bruce Barrett of US Bureau of Reclamation will be addressing the Willard Bay Dike Emergency Response and Temporary Repair. The Nominating Committee for next year's Branch officers have closed the nominations and candidate names and bios for -Elect and Secretary/Treasurer will be sent out for voting on April 13th in a special edition of the Utah Section Civil Source. Scott A. Olson, P.E. Central Utah Branch Secretary\Treasurer 801-763-5150 Southern Utah Branch The Southern Utah Branch is taking nominations for Secretary/Treasurer. The Southern Utah Branch sponsored a booth at the 2007 Construction Career Days held on March 20-21 at the Washington County Fair Grounds. Construction Career Days is an event that targets high school students who may not be interested in a college career. At the event, ASCE demonstrated the use of total station surveying equipment and a nuclear density gauge in conjunction with a fun activity and chocolate to spark the students' interest. Each student who visited the booth received an ASCE sticker to apply to their hard hat.

In the two days following the event, [parents] mention how every student they knew, up and down the street, was still excited and talking about what they did, and all the different kinds of things you in construction do. Vernon Parent Event Coordinator Utah Construction Career Days The Southern Utah Branch tours the Quail Lake Water Treatment Plant in March. Arthur O. LeBaron, P.E. Southern Utah Branch Geotechnical Group The Geotechnical Group does not have any announcements for April. Younger Member Forum The Southern Utah Branch is also sponsoring a local West Point Bridge Design Contest. The contest is currently open to students in the Counties of Washington, Iron, Beaver, Garfield, Kane, Piute, San Juan, and Wayne. The contest will end on May 14, 2007 at 11:59 P.M. To register go to http://bridgecontest.usma.edu/login.htm. The local contest code is WCJ16D. Prizes include a Hewlett Packard 50G Calculator, Hewlett Packard 43S Calculator, and a 1 GB jump drive. For more information, please contact an officer from the Southern Utah Branch. The month of March was filled with more than enough opportunities for anyone willing and interested to get involved with the community and the engineering field. The month of April also holds plenty of opportunity. The Younger Member Forum is holding its Spring BBQ this month on the 27 th of April at the Sugarhouse Park. We will be starting at 5:30 pm. Please plan on coming and RSVP to cmurray@jacobsenconstruction.com to help make sure there is plenty of food for all. The YMF has completed the outreach kits and they are ready to be used. As described in last months letter, these are self contained kits that have six different engineering presentations with handouts and all the necessary equipment to be taken right in to a classroom and presented. The intent is to provide you the materials needed with very little work and preparation on your part to participate. The kits can be taken to any school you would like and are probably most suitable for grades 4, 5, or 6. If you would like to participate

and volunteer in the outreach program please let us know. The kits can be shipped to anyone and anywhere in the state that is interested in outreach to the schools or other youth groups. Please contact Cable Murray at cmurray@jacobsenconstruction.com if you would like more information. Please see the updated YMF 2007 Contact Information below. Regards, James Barron, P.E. USYMF- The spring PE Exam Review Class will be finishing up the first week this month. We hope that it has been helpful to those who attended and helped prepare them for the exam on the 20 th. Good luck to everyone taking the exam. The judging of the exhibits at the 2007 Salt Lake Valley Science & Engineering Fair is complete. The Younger Member Forum presented a total of 15 awards to nine different teams, along with three $50 and six $25 cash prizes to the teams. A huge thanks goes out to Ronielle Peltier, James Barron, Bryan Schmutz, Cathy Romero, Peter Jager, Ivan Hooper, Curt McCuistion, Kiran Bhyani, and Chris Siavrakas who helped make it all happen. We continue to be in need of help with updating and maintaining our web page and e-mail list. The web page is already set up and is in a format that does not require any web page programming skills. Anyone interested in getting involved, without a huge time commitment would be greatly appreciated. Changing Your Email Address? Keep us posted!
