Knights of Columbus Winnipeg (St. John Brebeuf) Council #1107 Volume 14, Issue 10 JUNE/JULY 2010 Grand Knight s Report My Fellow Knights As we approach the end of our year, (even though we do continue over the summer), I am inviting everyone to a yearend wind up on June 16 th, at 7PM. Come early to socialize. We will have a brief meeting with games to follow. The meal is $10, beverages $2, and soft drinks are FREE! With weather permitting, we will venture outside for lawn darts, or bocce. Anyone having any of these games please let me know. The more games, the more people can play! This is a great time to mingle with brother Knights as we head into summer There are a few things that are coming up in the future plans of fund raising and we need your input. We are planning to raise funds through Sobey s, and Omar will be asking for your support, as it needs to be voted on by the members. Omar is also planning an ART SHOW in the spring of 2011. We will also hear about the money we have raised and who received donations. Over the past few weeks at mass, we have heard from various people asking for support for different appeals. Here we are as a charitable organization also asking for parish support with all our fund raising events, and one asks are we doing enough to support our parish, and our council? We all have busy lives, with things to do and people to see. Our church and council would not survive without financial and moral support. Continued on Page 4 Chaplain s Report Dear Brother Knights, Greetings to you all in the Lord! As I write this the priest assignments effective August 3, 2010 have just been announced. I m on the list as I told you the weekend of May 29/30. I would like to spend a few moments and words to reflect on this with you. My first reaction was surprise. Why, I don t know; my six year appointment is up as are several others on the move list. Changes happen it s certainly not unfamiliar to me. Why surprise? Well, I thought since I have only a few more years before retiring that I might have been asked to stay on for that time you know you re there already, things yet to complete, path of least resistance, etc., etc. Besides which, moving is scary What will the new place be like? Will they like me? What will I find when I go there? and, not least of all Where will I live? You get the drift. Change is disturbing, and more so as you age. Now look at the prayer beside this article, A Stewardship Prayer. It is a beautiful prayer. You could use it to make a retreat, reflecting on every line of it. In that prayer I ask that my heart will be open to continued conversion in my life and that I may be a good steward: that I will follow faithfully, serve joyfully, give generously, live responsibly and possess sensibly. Chaplain s Report Continued from Page 1 A Stewardship Prayer Almighty God, I give thanks for all that I have and all that I am. Most of all, I give thanks for the great gift of Your Son, Jesus. I pray that through a personal relationship with the Risen Christ, my heart will open to continued conversion in my life. I pray that I may be a good steward: that I will follow faithfully, serve joyfully, give generously, live responsibly and possess sensibly. In gratitude for the abundant gifts You have so graciously given to me, I return to You the first fruits of these gifts, through acts of service and by generously sharing all that You have entrusted to me. Heavenly Father, by Your Holy Spirit, help me to be a gift to others, in Your name. Amen As I reflect on those words when faced with this change in assignment I realize that this calls from me openness to God s grace, the work of the Holy Spirit in my life to grow in the Lord. I have as have we all been gifted in my life. I m called to share these gifts with others. I promised the Bishop who ordained me that I would do as he asks me to do this from time to time. I promise in this stewardship prayer to follow faithfully, to serve joyfully, and to give of myself generously wherever the Church needs me. Therefore, with deep faith and trust in God I go to my new assignment. For my part I have deeply enjoyed my fellowship with you, my brother Knights of Columbus of Council 1107. I am profoundly grateful to you for your commitment and determination to do all you can for the hospitality and community building in this family of St. John Brebeuf. I will treasure the memories of serving with you. Fr. Mark Tarrant, who will succeed me, will, I know, take his part in going forward with you as I, in turn, will do at St. Mary s Cathedral. In all of this, God is at work. If we commit ourselves and trust in Him then we have nothing to fear, for He has promised to be with us always! Bless you, God love you, and the peace of the Lord be with you always! Vivat Jesus! Reverend Monsignor D. Ward Jamieson, V. G. Pastor, St. John Brebeuf Parish Chaplain, Council #1107 On behalf of all the Knights at 1107 we thank Msgr. Jamieson for all his support over the years as our chaplain. You will be sadly missed by all of us and as a gift to you we will attempt to emulate the example of Stewardship that you have given generously and with so much love to our council and our parish. Knights of Columbus 3

Election of Officers 2010-2009 Columbian Year Elections were held on May 12 th. The following were elected to serve a one year term (July 1, 2010 June 30, 2011) Grand Knight Lawrie Caron 885-1047 Deputy G.K. Jack Blair 488-2201 Treasurer Aurèle LeClaire 489-6996 Recorder Gordon Danylchuk 475-8330 Advocate Omer DeWandel 261-8256 Chancellor Roy McPhail 231-2040 Warden Alan Simeons 488-8987 Inside Guard Norm Barnabe 231-2031 Inside Guard Ray Senez 895-1577 Outside Guard Pat Gobenciong 488-2226 Trustee 1 yr. Bob Girouard 488-2968 Trustee 2 yr. Dan Shepherd 488-4636 Trustee 3 yr. Grant Nazarko 489-3748 Congratulations to all who have agreed to accept the nomination and who were subsequently elected to the various positions. Grand Knight s Message Continued from page 1 We are called to be Stewards! Each of us has different talents and gifts, which should not be hidden, but shared! Our council, as does the church, requires members to become active. At our last State Convention, we were told that the average age of a Knight was 59! Where are the young people? Without young members in our church, the membership of the parish will dwindle, and there will be no one to carry on. The church is in need of repairs, and we still need to support the Archdiocese s Annual Appeal. When you are called, think! Am I doing all I can, or can I do more? You may not be financially able to support everything, but don t be afraid to volunteer. I look forward to seeing you on June 9 th. Vivat Jesus, Lawrie Caron Grand Knight, Council #1107 GOOD OF THE ORDER: Please keep brother Leonard Schmidt in your thoughts an prayers as he awaits bypass surgery scheduled for Monday, July 5 th at the St. Boniface Hospital. If you know of a Knight or family member who is sick or has passed away, please contact Grand Knight Lawrie Caron who will arrange to send a getwell or sympathy card. PROGRAM REPORTS o THE SOBEY S GIFT CARD PROGRAM The program would entail having members of the council selling Sobeys gift cards after each of the Saturday and Sunday masses. The principle of the program is to purchase these cards from Sobey s at a discount price for resale to the parishioners. The higher volume of cards we purchase the greater the discount. Council has decided to purchase the $15,000.00 volume and subsequently receive a 9% discount. The $15,000.00 would be obtained from: 1) $6,000.00 from operating reserve 2) $9,000.00 in the form of loans solicited from council members Approval of this evening s motion has given us the first $6,000.00 of seed monies required. We will be issuing a letter to all council members sometime in June to solicit loans for the balance of seed monies. We have also received approval from parish council to use the church facilities to transact our sales. We are also going to approach our financial institution for obtaining the necessary electronic merchant machines in order to transact our sales. We are hoping that we will have everything in place for the start of our 2010-11 fraternal year. Vivat Jesus Omer DeWandel Community Director ART EXHIBIT AND SALE FUNDRAISER This planned fundraiser would take place in the St. John Brebeuf School Gymnasium and kitchen facility over a three day period. The proposed dates of the art sale would be May 13 th, 14 th and 15 th, 2011. Our council would be completely responsible for the logistics of operating the project. This would be securing the artists, managing the venue, displaying the art and to manage the financial aspects of the project. All net profits realized from the sale of the art would be turned over to the parish. The standard arrangement for such a sale is that the artist would turn over 25% of their profits to the organizer. In return, the parish will issue a tax receipt to each individual artist for the amount that he or she has returned to the organizer for the sale of their art. In conjunction with the show the council would organize a bistro and would set up an art raffle. The profits of these to companion projects would be retained by the council. Our council will be requesting Parish council approval to undertake this project by letter sometime this week. It is to be noted that both these projects would be ongoing, annual events and will require significant manpower from our council. VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME! IT IS ALL ABOUT CHARITY AND STEWARDSHIP. Vivat Jesus Omer DeWandel Community Director Knights of Columbus 6

PROGRAM REPORTS (continued) ICCD Report The Council experienced a record year in sales for the 2009-10 ICCD campaign. Our sales of ICCD tickets totalled $5380.00. Most of the tickets were sold by our volunteers at the kiosk located at the Grant Park Shopping Centre. Also a good number of tickets were sold at the Price Choppers Grocery store at the corner of Stafford and Pembina Highway. Also about a dozen members personally sold or bought tickets. At the State Convention, ICCD chairman Claude Comeault reported that total Manitoba sales this year surpassed last years sales. Thank you to all members of the Council who helped out by selling tickets, buying tickets or who helped out in other ways to make this year a success. This combined effort will give our charitable account a much needed boost. Bob Girouard and George Ferris Lawrie and Mateusz Majkowski, seminarian, receiving his $500.00 cheque from the Council. Donations Committee Report This year we saw some new and unique events in our council with regard to our charitable donations. First, we formed a donations committee that was given the mandate to review requests for donations as well as identifying other charitable organizations that were felt worthy of consideration for support from our council. The committee took these recommendations to the council for review and approval. In addition to our main fundraising effort of selling ICCD tickets, our council also had great success with a few new fundraising events. First we hosted the Manitoba State Golf tournament. This event was a terrific success and it contributed to our fundraising. Early in the new year we also successfully ran a Super Bowl pool where we soldout all tickets. Finally, we organized a night with the Manitoba Moose where we raised $2000 for Haiti relief. Our donations this year included: Culture of Life: $200.00 Caritas Dinner (tickets) $160.00 Serra Club Dinner (tickets) $150.00 4 th Degree Dinner (tickets) $100.00 Philippines Relief $315.00 Chez Nous $200.00 Rossbrook House $400.00 Pregnancy Family Support $400.00 League for Life $400.00 Development & Peace $400.00 Villa Rosa $400.00 Mateusz Majkowski $500.00 St. John Brebeuf Bursary Fund $500.00 Haiti Relief $2,000.00 Total $6,125.00 Joe Brekelmans Knights of Columbus 7
