1 Junior Learner s Manual September 3, 2017 God s Covenant with Man Lesson Objective Bible Principle Parallel Passage I will know that God made a covenant with Noah. God gave man permission to kill animals for food, but man must never kill another man. In the Image of God Genesis 9:2-6 Memory Verse: Whoso sheddeth man s blood, by man shall his blood be shed. Genesis 9:6 The Rainbow Seals the Covenant Genesis 9:1-17 God may change the way He deals with people because they change their opinions, attitudes and lifestyles. God does what He knows is necessary to get people back on the right path. God caused a flood to cover the earth as a judgment of wickedness in Noah s time. After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah and all people who would live after his time. God promised Noah He would never again cause a flood to cover the entire earth. God guaranteed the covenant or agreement with Noah by placing a rainbow in the earth s atmosphere after rain. He promised every time people on the earth saw a rainbow that He would be remembering His covenant. The covenant God made with Noah is called the Noahic Covenant. A covenant is a binding agreement or a promise between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action. A covenant can have rules or be without rules. A covenant with rules is an agreement that requires all persons to do certain things. God promises He will do certain things if the people will do certain things. A covenant without rules is an agreement by God to do certain things without the other person or persons doing anything. The covenant God made with Noah was a covenant without rules. Before the flood, humans only ate plants as food. After the flood, God made two rules for the new diet. First, God permitted humans to kill animals, fish and birds for food. Second, people could not eat or drink the blood of anything because life is in the blood of all creatures. People could not kill each other because man is made in God s image. Following the flood, God said, At the hand of every man s brother will I require the life of man. God gave the power and the authority to end the life of a murderer to the blood avenger the nearest male relative of the dead person. Only he was responsible for taking the life of the murderer. Later, God changed these instructions. He put the authority for capital punishment under the Law that He gave His people, Israel. The murderer was stoned by all the people. Still later, God put the authority for punishing the murderer in the power of government. To day, governments have the responsibility to make laws to execute murderers. 3 Lesson 1
