IN THANKSGIVING by Father Doughty While stationed so many years ago in St. Thomas St. Joseph parish on Staten Island as a seminarian, I went along on the eighth grade class trip to Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. A working model of the original settlement established by the Mayflower pilgrims stands there and appears upon arrival to be inhabited still by those early immigrants to these shores. Actors dress the part of Myles Standish and George Soul, John and Priscilla Alden and others who made their way across the ocean in a dangerous voyage. You might find it difficult to believe that they are only actors. They speak in a similar manner to those whose part they play. They know the history as if it were their own. They are experienced in preparing and cooking the very meals the pilgrims ate, in constructing simple homes with thatched roofs, in planting crops and tending to the livestock. They know what the pilgrims believed about God too, and they speak with a refreshing openness about matters of faith that would be nice to hear in our days when we are told that such topics would be better left alone in polite company. While exploring a replica of the Mayflower with the eighth grade boys, we met an engaging young woman in period dress knitting quietly in a corner of the ship. She called us over and introduced herself. She said she had arrived on the Mayflower with her husband and was waiting for the settlement to be built before she disembarked and joined him on land. History tells us the wait was long for those who remained on ship, but she gave no hint of any of the tiredness or anxiety that we might expect from the ordeal that they all endured. She talked of her dreams for a big house and a happy household. She invited to boys to come and apprentice themselves to her husband and work in and around their house. The boys were captivated by her hope and joy and they left the Mayflower with an experience, I think, of what moved these people to such an extraordinary undertaking. Later, I browsed the bookstore nearby, and found a book that listed the names of the pilgrims with a brief biography for each. The entry for the young women said that she had not lived out the year but had died on board the ship. The boys were troubled when I told them. The sacrifice and faith of this young woman made a deep impression on them and if anything, I hoped they would understand that nothing in her life could be taken for granted or regretted, the very reason the first pilgrims celebrated the first thanksgiving feast with sincerity after a difficult year full of sadness. As much as our hearts and minds turn toward our families and to those who are in any kind of want this Thanksgiving, we also look back at those in our history whose sacrifices and faith have enabled us to live despite what s reported in the news in so wonderful a country. They teach and inspire us, but above all, they show us that no blessings in life come to us apart from God s goodness. Above all, we give thanks to the Lord because He does not regret or take our lives for granted either.
