WELCOME Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service First English Lutheran Church St. Mark s Lutheran Church Trinity Lutheran Church November 22 nd, 2017 Welcome to our celebration of Thanksgiving. Your presence here this evening makes us more complete. Thank you, for being here with us and worshipping with us. As we gather to sing praise and give thanks to our Lord, we are gifted with everyone s presence. As we gather together as the body of Christ, let us acknowledge how God has provided for us and express thanks for God s bountiful blessings. Prelude by Niki Oren & Karen Luginbuhl A Thanksgiving Prelude - Callahan GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. * Call to Worship Psalm 100 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all you lands! Serve the LORD with gladness: come into God s presence with a song. Know that the LORD is God, our maker to whom we belong; we are God s people and the sheep of God s pasture. Enter the gates of the Lord with thanksgiving and the courts with praise; give thanks and bless God s holy name. Good indeed is the Lord, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from age to age.

* Hymn of Thanksgiving #693 Come, Ye Thankful People, Come * Greeting May the peace and the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. * The Passing of the Peace * The Prayer of the Day Let us pray Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits and serve you in willing obedience, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Adult Choir Come, Give Thanks - Lojeski Children s Message THE WORD God speaks to us in scripture-reading, preaching and song. The First Reading Deuteronomy 8:7-18 A reading from Deuteronomy. 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and

barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9 a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. 10 You shall eat your fill and bless the LORD your God for the good land that he has given you. 11 Take care that you do not forget the LORD your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances and his statutes, which I am commanding you today. 12 When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them; 13 and when your herds and flocks have multiplied; and your silver and gold is multiplied; and all that you have is multiplied, 14 then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock 16 and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you; and in the end to do you good. 17 Do not say to yourself, My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth. 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today. Word of God, Word of Life. Praise to you, O Christ. The Second Reading 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 A reading from 2 Corinthians. 6 The point is this: the one who sows sparingly, will also reap sparingly and the one who sows bountifully, will also reap bountifully. 7 Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. 9 As it is written, He scatters abroad, he gives to

the poor; his righteousness endures forever. 10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; 12 for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. 13 Through the testing of this ministry, you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! Word of God, Word of Life. Praise to you, O Christ. * The Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia. * The Holy Gospel Luke 17:11-19 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 11 On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13 they called out, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! 14 When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were made clean. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. 16 He prostrated himself at Jesus feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus asked, Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18 Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this

foreigner? 19 Then he said to him, Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. This is the Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Message by Pastor Neil Brady * Song of Thanksgiving #679 For the Fruit of All Creation * The Apostles Creed Let us profess our faith using the words of the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. * Prayer of Thanksgiving Together we pray Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we humbly thank you for your goodness to us and to all that you have made. We praise you for your creation, for keeping us and all things in your care and for all the blessings of

life. Above all, we bless you for your immeasurable love in redeeming the world by our Lord, Jesus Christ, for the means of grace and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies that with thankful hearts we praise you, not only with our lips but in our lives, by giving ourselves to your service and by living in your gifts of holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit, be all worship and praise, now and forever. Amen. WE PARTICIPATE IN THE MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. The Offering Song of Praise Hal Hopson Let us now offer our tithes and gifts for the work of God s church in the world today. * The Offertory Response #182 Let the Vineyards Let the vineyards be fruitful Lord and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and the dreams of all; unite them in the prayers we offer now. Grace our table with your presence and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. * Offertory Prayer O Lord, our God, the author and giver of all that is good, we thank you for your mercy and for your loving care over all your creatures. We bless you for the gift of life, for your guiding hands upon us and for the tokens of your love within us. We thank you for friendship and duty, for the good hopes and precious memories, for the joys that cheer us and the trials that teach us to trust in you. Most of all, we thank you

for the saving knowledge of your Son, our Savior and for the living presence of your Holy Spirit. In all these things, we give thanks and praise to you, Creator God, every day of our lives, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. * Eucharistic Prayer Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise; beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God. Generations bless your faithfulness; through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. We pray for the gift of your Spirit; in our gathering, within this meal, among your people, throughout the world. Blessing, praise and thanks to you, holy God, through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit, in your church, without end. Amen.

* The Lord s Prayer Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Invitation to Communion In the bread and wine, Christ is truly present. All who seek the Living Lord are welcomed at our table. Come to the table feast, for now all is ready. Communion Hymns - #494 For the Bread Which You have Broken #689 Praise and Thanksgiving #502 The King of Love My Shepherd Is * Blessing May the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ, strengthen you and keep you in his grace.
