A NOTE FROM FATHER LEN Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We also begin the period of anticipation of the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia this coming September. There are so many things that need to be done for this meeting, as well as for the visit of Pope Francis, that we can forget the reason for this event. It is to remind us of how important the Family is in our lives. Whether one s is traditional, blended, single parent or even a single person, we need to lift them up and acknowledge the gift that God has bestowed on each one. Even though we hold up the Holy Family as role models, remember that they had issues which they needed to address, such as an unwed pregnancy, a precocious child that stayed a bit too long in the temple, and a son that in adulthood challenged the norms of society. Each of us has our quirks, but that is what makes us unique and God-filled. As we remember all families in prayer this weekend, and the families of our parish throughout the next nine months, please pray that our God might strengthen the ties that bind them. And in a special way, once in a while, take a moment to remember in prayer the family of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Community. Your gift to the Bishop s Annual Appeal supports these vital ministries for our families and communities. MAKE AN ENDURING GIFT TO OUR PARISH Express your commitment to the principles of Christian Charity and Stewardship by making a legacy or planned gift to Our Lady of Lourdes. There are several ways to structure your gift to support our Parish and/or a ministry while simultaneously improving your financial and tax situation. For example: You can designate our parish as a beneficiary of a gift bequest of any size in your will. By naming our Parish as a life insurance policy beneficiary you avoid potential estate taxes if you own the policy on your own life. A gift of appreciated stock, bonds and/or mutual fund shares that you have held more than one year provides you with a federal income tax charitable deduction for the full appreciated value and you do not incur capital gains tax on the transaction. Through a Charitable Gift Annuity you can make a gift and receive income for life. You establish an agreement with the Diocese whereby you irrevocably transfer a gift of cash, appreciated stock or other capital asset to benefit our Parish (through the Diocese) and in turn, the Diocese guarantees you specified income for life based on your age and a fixed rate you lock in when the annuity is established. You receive an immediate tax deduction for a portion of the asset and part of the annual annuity payment is tax-free. As you consider how to make a planned gift to the Church, you should consult your financial advisor and/or your estate attorney on how best to structure your Legacy Gift to determine how your assets, estate or taxes may be affected. For more information call the diocesan Stewardship & Development office at 732-562-2433, www.diometuchen.plannedgiving.org. PAGE 4

FAMILY PRAYER God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, pray for us! PAGE 5
