A child might tell the story this way: Noah built a boat and put lots of animals inside; then God sent gallons of rain to cover the earth but Noah and his family and the animals lived happily ever after. While this may be a child s sweet synopsis of the story there are greater treasures in this flood story for both child and adult to discover. To find the treasures, let s go way back, long before Noah was even born. After Adam and Eve left the garden of Eden, God made their son Cain a wanderer on earth because he had killed his brother Abel (see Gen. 4:10-11). Cain married, and his line of children, sadly, continued to reject God. Adam and Eve, however, had another son, whom they named Seth. According to the Bible Seth and his descendants revered God, for after reporting that Seth had a son, Scripture says, At that time people began to call on the name of Yahweh (v. 26). Genesis 5 traces Adam s descendants through Seth. One descendant was Enoch, who walked with God (5:24). Enoch fathered Methuselah, who fathered Lamech. Lamech fathered Noah. Noah means deliverer. It appears Lamech wanted his son to bring hope to their corrupt world (see v. 29). The population increased according to God s plan, and by God s grace men lived to an old age. But evil also increased on the earth. Human wickedness so grieved God s heart that He was compelled to destroy life on the earth. What God had so wonderfully created had ceased to reflect His glory. God would warn the people and give them time to repent, but men still would reject Him. Yet, even in this time of spiritual darkness, not everyone had forsaken God: Noah found favor in God s sight (6:8). Lamech s apparent desire for his son would be fulfilled. Noah was a righteous and blameless man, for he walked with God (see 6:9). God revealed to Noah that He no longer would put up with people s rebellion and wickedness, but would use Noah to deliver a remnant of people and animals who would survive. Surely Noah walked closely with God; he had to, since he heard and responded by faith and obedience, even to the point of constructing the enormous ark that was part of God s plan. It was God, Noah and his sons, seemingly a minority building this cradle for life. But God alone was all they needed. God asked Noah to do a huge thing, something that seemed ridiculous at times. Still, Noah did everything that God commanded. (6:22) Treasures abound in this beloved story. We see God s sovereignty over the generations, grace amid contempt, and salvation arriving through one man s obedience to God. Preschoolers can t yet understand all these truths, but they can know that Noah obeyed God and that good things happened as a result. Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Puzzle Center: Work Puzzles Offer a variety of non-fantasy wooden or cardboard puzzles for the children to work. What to Do: Encourage each child to finish a puzzle before leaving the center. Offer guidance rather than working the puzzle for the child. Link to the Bible Story: As children work, take advantage of opportunities to say the Bible Phrase or to briefly tell the Bible story. Home Living Center: Role Play Small rocking chair, sink and stove unit, small table and chairs; plastic dishes, child pots and pans, plastic food items; and doll items such as baby doll, doll bed, doll bag, blanket, clothes, bottles, and diapers. What to Do: Provide home living items. These will encourage children to role play home activities such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for the baby. Link to the Bible Story: As children play, look for opportunities to engage in conversations about the Bible story, Bible Phrase, or Bible truth. Center Time Art Center: Finish an Ark White construction paper (1 sheet per child) Brown strips of construction paper Washable markers and crayons What to Do: Print today s Bible Phrase, Noah obeyed God (Genesis 6:22), on each paper. Sketch the outline of an ark on each paper. Show preschoolers how to take the brown strips and glue them to finish the ark. Link to the Bible Story: As children work, call attention to the Bible Phrase. Express that God asked Noah to build an ark because He was going to send a flood. The ark would keep Noah, his family, and the animals safe. Comment that Noah did exactly what God asked him to do. Bible Learning Center: Bible Story Match Copies of Activity Page: Bible Story Match (Reproducible) Crayons or washable markers What to Do: Invite each child to use a marker or crayon to connect the matching objects in the Bible story. Link to the Bible Story: Talk with preschoolers about each object on the left side of the paper and its part in the Bible story. Read the Bible Phrase at the bottom of the activity page. Block Center: Build with Blocks Wooden blocks Painter s Tape or Masking Tape What to Do: Provide a small carpet if possible. Blocks are best located in a corner of the room away from the traffic flow. Tape an outline of an ark in the Block Center. Encourage children to use the blocks to outline the ark. Assure them that the real ark was, of course, much, much larger almost the length of 11/2 football fields! Link to the Bible Story: As children build, listen for opportunities to share the Bible Phrase or to tell a part of the Bible story. Clean-up Time Encourage preschoolers to help at clean-up time. Assign specific tasks for preschoolers to do such as placing all the crayons in the basket, throwing away the trash, gathering all the glue sticks, etc. Guide children to the Bible Story Time area. Bible Story Time Bible Teaching Picture God Guided Noah (Reproducible) God s Unfolding Story Cube (Reproducible/Cardstock) Introduction Show the God s Unfolding Story Cube. Express to the boys and girls that even though we find many stories in the Bible, the Bible really tells one big story, and all the little stories are a part of the big one we can call God s Unfolding Story. Tell children that each picture represents a part of God s Unfolding Story. Turn the cube and talk about each point of the story. (Refer to page 1.) Express that every story from the Bible is from one of these main points in God s Unfolding Story. Today s story is from the second point; People Disobeyed God. Express the following in your own words. Has anyone ever built something with wood using a hammer and nails? Talk about some things the children have built, or you might use an example of something you yourself have built. Continue: Our Bible story today is about a man who used lots of wood and woodworking tools. The man s name was Noah. God asked him to build something very important. Listen to hear what God asked Noah to build. Listen as well to learn why God asked him to build it. Bible Story God Guided Noah (Genesis 6:5-22) Our story begins many years after Adam and Eve left the garden of Eden. There were many people living on the earth at this time. Sadly, they did not love God or love each other. This made God very sad. In fact, people were so disobedient to God that God decided to destroy life on the earth. God found only one man who was good. His name was Noah. Noah loved God and did what was right. God talked to Noah and said, Noah, I am sad people do not love me or follow my ways. I am going to destroy the whole earth with a flood. All the people and all the animals will be gone, but because you love Me and follow my ways, I am going to keep you and your family safe. God explained to Noah exactly how He would protect his family. He gave Noah instructions to build a big ark. An ark is a boat or a ship. The boat would keep Noah and his family safe when the rain came and the waters rose. God also told Noah that He would send two of every kind of animal into the boat. He asked Noah to bring enough food for his family and for all the animals. Can you imagine all that food and all those hungry animals? Noah obeyed God and got to work building the ark. Picture in your mind Noah and his three sons getting out their saws and cutting down trees to make the boat. Back and forth went their saws! Chop, chop, chop went the chisels! Bang, bang, bang went their axes and hammers! Noah and his sons worked long and hard to finish the boat, just as God had instructed. Noah did everything God told him to do. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture for today s Bible story. Here are some suggested questions. Why was God sad? What did God decide to do? God found one person who loved Him. Who was that individual? What did God ask Noah to build? Did Noah obey? Why do you think God wanted the animals on the ark? 2. Say today s Bible Phrase together: Noah obeyed God (Genesis 6:22). Talk about how hard it may have been for Noah and his family to obey God and build the ark. Express that perhaps the people laughed at Noah and tried to get him to disobey God because they didn t believe He would destroy the world. Comment that God helped Noah as he worked on the ark and gave him everything he needed to finish it. 3. Close the Bible Story Time in prayer, thanking God for Noah. Ask God to help each boy and girl obey Him. God s Unfolding Story for Older Preschoolers, Copyright 2013 - SundaySchoolZone.com OT02 Lesson 1 Hour A Page 3

Craft Time Noah Sack Puppet Copies of Noah Sack Puppet (1 per child) Crayons or washable markers Lunch sacks (1 per child) Glue What to Do: Cut out the parts of the puppet. Give each child the puppet parts to color. Instruct each child that the head of his or her puppet should be glued to the flap of the sack, and the clothing glued just under the flap. The Bible Phrase can be glued at the bottom. Link to Bible Story: As children work, remind them of Noah s obedience to God. When puppets are complete, demonstrate the way it works by placing your hand inside one of the bags and moving the puppet s head. Children can say the Bible Phrase together using their puppets. Snack Time Be sure to wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Say a thank-you prayer to God for the snack. When snack time has ended, encourage preschoolers to help with cleaning up. Game Time/Dismissal Flip Flop Rain Drops Plop! None What to Do: Ask each child to join you in a circle in the game time area and to find a partner. Ask partners to face each other. Give a direction such as elbow to elbow. Demonstrate to children how to touch elbows together. Tell preschoolers you will give several directions for them to follow. Express that at some point you will say, Flip, flop, rain drops plop! When you do, they should scatter, and each one should find a new friend. Some directions might be: toe to toe; foot to foot; head to head; knee to knee; finger to finger; back to back; hand to hand; kneel down and touch knees; make a bridge with your arms and hands; make a circle by holding hands. At the close of the activity, talk about the importance of following directions. Remind boys and girls that Noah followed God s directions, obeying Him even when he didn t understand why God had instructed him as He had. Dismiss the children when their parents arrive. Be sure to follow your church s security guidelines. God s Unfolding Story for Older Preschoolers, Copyright 2013 - SundaySchoolZone.com OT02 Lesson 1 Hour A Page 4
