S E S S I O N 13 A New Day for Men The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing for a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests.!!!!!!isaiah 9:1-6!!!!!!Midnight Mass, First Reading! 1

Bishop John Magee: Pope John Paul II is a man of profound prayer.! Pope John Paul II went to confession every Friday that he was in Rome.! The Military Leadership of John Paul II The family is placed at the heart of the great struggle between good and evil, between life and death, between love and all that is opposed to love (Letter to Families, #23).! Began Pontificate with catechesis on the meaning of marriage (Theology of the Body).! Established the Pontifical Council of the Family, the Pope John Paul II Institute on Marriage and Family, and the World Meetings of Family.! 5

The Economic Leadership of John Paul II Communism fell in the end because of the system s socioeconomic weakness (Memory and Identity, p. 48).! The primary basis of the value of work is man himself in the final analysis it is always man who is the purpose of the work, whatever work it is that is done by man even if the common scale of values rates it as the merest service (Laborem Exercens, #6).! The Political Leadership of John Paul II The pope started this chain of events that led to the end of communism (Lech Walesa).! At the dawn of the new millennium, we wish to propose once more the message of hope which comes from the stable of Bethlehem: God loves all men and women on earth and gives them the hope of a new era, an era of peace. His love, fully revealed in the Incarnate Son, is the foundation of universal peace (World Day of Peace, January 1, 2000).! 6

As an authentic leader, Pope John Paul II was willing to pay the price until the very end.! A Sacrifice for the Family I understood that I must lead Christ s Church into this third millennium through suffering Precisely because the family is threatened, the family is under attack. The Pope has to be attacked, the Pope has to suffer, so that every family and the world may see that there is a higher Gospel by which the future is prepared, the third millennium of families (May 29, 1994).! 7

John Paul II and the First Word Father forgive them, for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34).! Grant that our forebears, our brothers and sisters, and we, your servants, who by the grace of the Holy Spirit turn back to you in wholehearted repentance, may experience your mercy and receive the forgiveness of our sins (March 12, 2000).! Pope John Paul II took personal responsibilities for his actions and those of the whole Church.! John Paul II and the Second Word Today you will be with me in Paradise (Luke 23:43).! God, clearly represented by the father in the parable [of the prodigal son], welcomes every prodigal child that returns to him (March 12, 2000).! Pope John Paul II maintained clarity of thought about humanity s eternal destiny.! 8

John Paul II and the Third Word Woman, behold your son. [Disciple], behold your mother (John 19:26).! Therefore, O Mother, like the Apostle John, we wish to take you into our home, that we may learn from you to become like your Son. Woman, behold your Son. Here we stand before you to entrust to your maternal care ourselves, the Church, the entire world grant that the darkness will not prevail over the light. To you, Dawn of Salvation, we commit our journey through the new Millennium (October 8, 2000).! Pope John Paul II laid a foundation for the future.! John Paul II and the Fourth Word My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46).! Now, however, [God] seems absent, as though asleep or indifferent. He feeds the flock he must lead and nourish only with the bread of tears. Enemies scoff at this humiliated, despised people; yet God does not seem to be moved nor to be stirred up (T)his is the Psalmist's conviction that finds an echo in our hearts and opens them to hope (April 10, 2002).! Pope John Paul II felt the apparent abandonment of God. He was willing to pay the price.! 9

John Paul II and the Fifth Word I thirst (John 19:28).! I find great peace in thinking of the time when the Lord will call me: from life to life! And so I often find myself saying, with no trace of melancholy, a prayer recited by priests after the celebration of the Eucharist at the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to you (Letter to the Elderly, October 1, 1999).! Pope John Paul II maintained clarity of thought about his own destiny.! John Paul II and the Sixth Word Father, into your hands I commend my spirit (Luke 23:46).! He has surrender himself to God (Spokesman for Pope John Paul II, April 1, 2005).! Pope John Paul II lived integrity of action, surrendering himself fully to God.! 10

John Paul II and the Seventh Word It is consummated (John 19:30).! Amen. (The last word spoken by Pope John Paul II on April 2, 2005).! Pope John Paul II lived integrity of action until the end.! Remaining steadfastly united to God, authentic leaders receive the blessings of God and experience an incredible fruitfulness.! 11

The Focus upon the Great Jubilee This time, in which God in His hidden design has entrusted to me the universal service connected with the Chair of St. Peter in Rome, is already very close to the year 2000 We also are in a certain way in a season of new Advent, a season of new expectation.!!!!redemptoris Hominis #1! Crossing the Threshold of Hope But certainly a river of living water has been poured out on the Church. This is the water of the Spirit which quenches thirst and brings new life Christ whom we have contemplated and loved bids us to set out once more on our journey we can count on the power of the same Holy Spirit who was poured out at Pentecost and who impels us still today to start out anew.!!novo Millennio Ineunte #1 and #57! 12

The Triumph of Mercy To humanity, which at times seems to be lost and dominated by the power of evil, egotism and fear, the risen Lord offers as a gift his love that forgives, reconciles and reopens the spirit to hope. It is love that converts hearts and gives peace. How much need the world has to understand and accept Divine Mercy. Lord, who with [your] Death and Resurrection reveal the love of the Father, we believe in you and with confidence repeat to you today: Jesus, I trust in You, have mercy on us and on the whole world.!!!!!!april 3, 2005.! Small Group Discussion Starter Questions! 1. How can you become an apostle of the new springtime of the Church?! 2. Who are you going to bring with you to the program in January?! See you in January! 13
