S T E WA R D S H I P N E W S 3 "What can I do to be a good steward and disciple of Jesus?" THE MANY FACES OF STEWARDSHIP AT SMG Will Thiel comes from Grand Island, Nebraska. Being an only child Will made strong bonds with a few of his cousins growing up. One cousin in particular would have a big impact on Will as the years passed. He was raised in the Methodist Church and eventually converted to the Catholic Faith. This is where cousin Stan O Brien came into play. Stan had converted to Catholicism when he married his wife, Linda. Stan gave Will a Catholic Bible as well as other reading material about our Faith. Will went through grade school, high school, and eventually graduated in the late 80 s from college at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. After graduating, he worked in retail for the majority of his career in Nebraska. Will became good friends with a former boss of his, Bob Wachowicz. Bob and his wife Betty retired and moved to Scottsdale, joined St. Maria Goretti and Bob served as an Usher at the 9:00 am Mass on Sundays. Bob invited Will to visit them in Scottsdale. After the visit, Will realized two things. One, that he wanted to move to Scottsdale and two, more importantly, was that he wanted to become Catholic. When he returned home he talked with Stan and made the decision to enroll in RCIA. Stan & Linda were his Sponsors. Moving to Scottsdale in 2010 he immediately started attending St. Maria Goretti. He felt a very strong tie and truly felt this parish was where he belonged. Bob Wachowicz and John Retkowski were Ushers at the 9:00 am Mass and they quickly convinced Will that he needed to be an Usher as well. He has since taken over as the head Usher. Will gets an enormous sense of fulfillment from greeting people as they enter church, serving during Mass, and saying goodbye to our parishioners and visitors as they leave. Putting a smile on a persons face can make all the difference in their day. He wants everyone to know that it takes very little time to be a Steward and Ambassador for our Faith! The personal rewards are tremendous. SMG 50TH ANNIVERSARY Parish Picnic - NEXT SUNDAY, December 3rd on the parish grounds. Don t miss this fun family event as we remove the time capsule encapsulated in the church during its construction. We wonder what our founding fathers and members left for us...and what will we add for future generations? See page 10 of the bulletin for more details!! STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS We celebrate today what is popularly and traditionally called the Feast of Christ the King. This is also the beginning of the last week of our Catholic Liturgical Year, as the New Year begins with Advent next Sunday. We often mention that time is a gift to us; this idea of measuring Church time is also a gift, but do we truly appreciate it? People tend to say I go to church. In reality, Christ does not call us to go to church; He calls us to be Church. We should live our lives in such a way that it is clear we are Catholic and Christian and part of Christ s Kingdom, for He is our King. Were you aware that the name Christ is a royal title in itself? In Greek it means the anointed king. St. Paul referred to the Lord as king of kings and lord of lords, a phrase with which we are familiar. If we accept Christ as our King, and if we live our lives as His disciples and followers we are certainly part of His Kingdom. Pope Pius XI instituted today s solemnity in 1925 at a time when many countries were struggling with total loyalty to secular royalty. Pius XI wanted Catholics to recognize that their loyalty was to a higher power, their spiritual king in heaven. Pius XI wrote at that time, For Jesus Christ reigns over the minds of individuals by His teachings, in their hearts by His love, in each one s life by the living according to His law and the imitating of His example. PREPARE FOR SUNDAY MASS The St. Maria Goretti Men s Club has been at the forefront of our parish service organizations for over 40 years, providing our parishioners with opportunities for fellowship, spiritual growth & service. In memory of Mike Theobald and Bill Fleming, two men who personified service at SMG, we are pleased to further serve our community by providing assistance to low-income families and seniors to help brighten their Christmas. Applicants must be registered members of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Parish. Applications are in the parish office and in the brochure rack in the back of church. Deadline to apply or to nominate a family is December 3rd. * All applications will remain confidential * If you would like to donate to the fund, please direct it to the parish office attention: Men s Club Christmas Fund.

ADOPTION GUADALUPE CAN OUTREACH BE AN OPTION For years, St Maria Goretti parish has been helping to bring the blessings of the Christmas season to 30 families in Guadalupe. We live in an affluent city but some of the families that we help still live in houses with dirt floors. Every year the food collected the first Sunday in December is given to Guadalupe Outreach. Anything you can give is welcome but each family is given certain specific items and if not donated, will have to be purchased by the Outreach coordinator. When shopping for items for the December food drive, please remember these items: coffee (3lb bag), sugar (5lb bag), flour (5lb bag), instant oatmeal, tomato sauce, hot chocolate mix, cooking oil, salt, mayonnaise, peanut butter (large), canned goods (beans, peas, carrots, corn, peaches/fruit), canned chicken, Black Forest canned ham (3lbs). Put a note on your refrigerator or on your phone and help any way you can. If you would like to sponsor a food box for an individual family, or would like to make a donation, please call Lois Lovett 480-483-3061. Thank you for your generosity toward those in need. ECUMENICAL AND INTER FAITH UPDATE Buckets of Hope supplies can be dropped off at St. Maria Goretti after Dec. 4th. The Church promotes unity among all the followers of Christ which flows from our common baptism and seeks the fullness of unity which is a condition of evangelization. The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Division damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature. Thus we are asked to pray faithfully that unity will be achieved by those separated. The Church of Phoenix is called to participate in the quest for unity by promoting ecumenical and inter-religious relations as mandated by Vatican II. The Church has urged the faithful to seek unity with her separated Christian brothers and sisters and respect the truth found in all religions. It is essential that each parish as part of its mission seek ways to further unity with all Christians and non-christians. As part of this call we at St. Maria Goretti Parish join the Diocese of Phoenix in this quest. Those interested in furthering this ministry please contact Tom Brady 480-745-5080.
