Thanksgiving Eve ~ November 26, 2014 Opening Hymn: Great is Thy Faithfulness LSB 809 Stand Invocation P God the Father, C we thank You for creating the world and everything in it, P God the Son, C we thank You for living a perfect life, dying for our sins, and rising to life again. P God the Holy Spirit, C we thank You for calling, gathering, and making holy the whole Christian Church on earth. P We enter into our worship this evening in the name of and in praise to C Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. Confession and Absolution P Heavenly Father, we have been so richly blessed by You. C Yet we confess, Father, that we easily forget all the blessings of this life that You shower on us each day. P We get caught up in this life and forget that You are the giver of all good things. C Forgive us, Father, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ. P Dear Jesus, thank You for coming into the world to be our Savior. C Yet dear Savior, we so often forget the agony You suffered on our behalf, P and how You willingly took the punishment of our sins upon Yourself to give us forgiveness and life. C Forgive us, Lord Jesus. P Holy Spirit, You have called us to faith in Jesus Christ, and have continued to work in our hearts and lives to mold us into the people You have called us to be. C We must confess, however, that we often forget our calling as Your holy people, P and live as if it did not matter. C Forgive us, Lord. Continue Your sanctifying work within our hearts and lives. [Silence for remembrance and personal confession to God.] His mercies are new every morning; Great is Thy faithfulness. ~ Lamentations 3:23 P Although we often forget that every blessing comes from God, God still remembers His covenant, in which He promises, For I will forgive their wickedness, and remember their sins no more. [Jeremiah 31:34] Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, I announce the grace of God to all of you, and speaking for Him and at His command, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Thanks be to God! 0
Sit Hymn of Praise: This Is the Feast 1
First Reading Deuteronomy 26:1 11 1 When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. 3 And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our fathers to give us. 4 Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God. 5 And you shall make response before the LORD your God, A wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. 7 Then we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. 9 And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O LORD, have given me. And you shall set it down before the LORD your God and worship before the LORD your God. 11 And you shall rejoice in all the good that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Second Reading 2 Corinthians 9:6 15 6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 9 As it is written, He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever. 10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your 2
contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
