Following in the Footsteps of Jesus: Israel & Jordan May 17 29, 2018 Led by Dr. Jeffrey A. D. Weima

Follow in the footsteps of Jesus during the day and learn more about Jesus during evening study sessions! Travel to new Testament sites connected with Jesus life: Bethlehem, nazareth, Herod the Great s harbor in Caesarea, Capernaum, Bethsaida, Caesarea Philippi, and the major biblical sites in Jerusalem. other exciting activities include a boat ride on the sea of Galilee, floating in the dead sea, and visits to Masada, Qumran, and the Herodium. This tour also uniquely involves key sites in Jordan: Bethany, where Jesus was baptized; Machaerus, where John was beheaded; Mount nebo, where Moses viewed the promised land before his death; and the amazing city of Petra. Most days conclude with an evening study session that involves an inspirational lesson about Jesus life and ministry or the background of the new Testament. Join host Jeff Weima, professor of new Testament at Calvin Theological seminary and leading biblical scholar, for this life-impacting tour! Led by Dr. Jeffrey A. D. Weima Dr. Jeffrey Weima is Professor of New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary, where he has taught for the past 25 years. Jeff is the author of numerous scholarly articles, academic essays, and book reviews. He has published five books, including a recently completed major commentary on 1-2 Thessalonians. Jeff is an active member of several academic societies and he lectures and teaches courses around the world, leads biblical study tours, conducts intensive preaching seminars for pastors, and preaches widely in churches in both the USA and Canada. Jeff and his wife, Bernice, have been married for 34 years. They have four children and five very cute grandchildren. This will be Dr. Weima s 25th time leading a biblical study tour. Extensive study materials. Use of audio headsets (Israel only) May, 2018 Thursday, May 17 Departure from the U.S. Our inspirational tour begins! We ll meet at the Chicago O Hare International Airport to check in for our evening transatlantic flight. (D-in flight) Friday, May 18 Arrive Tel Aviv After changing planes in Europe, we ll arrive at Israel s Ben Gurion Airport. Following customs formalities, we ll meet our tour guide, transfer to our nearby hotel to check in for a one-night stay, and end our long travel day with a delicious dinner and good night s sleep. (B-in flight, D) Saturday, May 19 Caesarea Maritima, Mount Precipice, Nazareth, Sepphoris, Mount Arbel, Sea of Galilee Our first full day in Israel begins by driving to Caesarea, a majestic port built by King Herod, where Paul landed on his 2nd and 3rd missionary journeys and where he was also imprisoned for two years. We ll then continue to Mount Precipice on the edge of Nazareth for a great view of the Jerzeel Valley to the south and Nazareth to the north the region where Jesus spent much of his life and ministry. Next, we travel to nearby Sepphoris, the largest city in Galilee and the place where Joseph and Jesus may have done carpentry work. If time permits, we then travel to the Arbel National Park and Nature Reserve for an easy walk to Carob Lookout and Kinneret Lookout, where we ll be rewarded with magnificent views over the Sea of Galilee. End the day just outside Tiberias on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where we ll check into our hotel for a three-night stay, followed by our first evening study session and dinner. (B, D) Mount of the Beatitudes, Galilee View from Galilee Mountains to Sea of Galilee Hippodrome at Caesarea Cover: Jerusalem and Petra

Sunday, May 20 Tabgha, Capernaum, Chorazin, Bethsaida, Mount of Beatitudes, Sea of Galilee We ll spend the day exploring the Galilee region where many New Testament stories about Jesus took place. Our stops include: two churches of Tabgha the Church of Multiplication, which commemorates the feeding of 5,000 (Mark 6:30-44) and the Church of the Primacy of Peter, which commemorates Jesus final words to Peter (John 21:1-24); and Capernaum, where a 1st-century synagogue lies beneath a Franciscan church, and where the so-called House of Peter was discovered, along with an honorific column mentioning the Zebedees. We ll then see the remains of Chorazin (houses, ritual baths, and a synagogue), which Jesus visited and cursed for its unbelief; as well as Bethsaida, the birthplace of apostles Peter, Andrew, and Philip. Jesus performed several miracles here, including healing a blind man (Mark 8:22-26) and feeding 5,000 (Luke 9:10-17). Most of the archaeological remains here, however, date not to the 1st century but to a much earlier time period. Our full day also includes a memorable boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, as well as a visit to the Yigal Alon Museum at Nof Ginosar to see the Jesus Boat (1st-century fishing boat recovered from the mud of the Sea of Galilee). We end the day at the Mount of Beatitudes where, if permission is granted, Dr. Weima will lead a worship service. Finally, it s back to the hotel to enjoy another delicious meal. (B, D) Monday, May 21 Caesarea Philippi, Hippos (Susita), Mount Tabor, Sea of Galilee We ll travel north to Caesarea Philippi (Banias) at the base of Mount Hermon, the location of the largest springs that feed the Jordan River. Here, amid shrines to the Greek god Pan and other pagan deities, we are reminded of Jesus question, Who do people say I am? and Peter s important confession: You are the Messiah, the Son of God! Next follows a visit to Hippos (Susita) on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee a possible location for the healing of the Demon-Possessed Man living in the tombs (Mark 5:1-20). We ll end the day at Mount Tabor and the Church of Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-13), before returning to our hotel near Tiberias for another study session and dinner. (B, D) Tuesday, May 22 Bet Shean, Jerusalem Traveling south on our way to Jerusalem, we ll stop first at Bet Shean, the largest archaeological site in Israel with impressive remains dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Upon arrival in Jerusalem, we head first to the Israel Museum to see the Jerusalem model for a helpful overview of the ancient city. Here we also visit the Shrine of the Book (museum housing the Dead Sea Scrolls). We ll then take an exciting walk through Hezekiah s Tunnel (1/3-mile long) to the Pool of Siloam, which was involved in Jesus healing of a blind man (John 9:1-12). Check in at the hotel in Jerusalem for a four-night stay, study session, and dinner. (B, D) Jezreel Valley from the heights of Mount Tabor Herodium Ruins of the synagogue in Capernaum Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem

Wednesday, May 23 Herodium, Bethlehem, Jerusalem We go first to the Herodium the impressive, volcano-like palace-fortress of King Herod and the place from which he likely dispatched the soldiers responsible for slaying the infants of Bethlehem (Matt. 2:16-18). Here we see the swimming pool and surrounding portico, the rooms of the palace, synagogue, the tunnel and underground water cistern, theater, and the recently discovered tomb of Herod. We ll continue to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity. Return to Jerusalem for a visit to the Wohl Archaeological Museum, which contains the remains of several wealthy homes dating back 2,000 years. The site contains geometric patterned mosaic floors, still-vibrant frescoes, costly glassware, ceramics, and private Jewish ritual baths, all of which provide a peek into the life of the rich in the time of Jesus. Next, we visit the Jerusalem Archaeological Park and the Davidson Center to see the Temple Mount excavations before returning to the hotel for a study session and dinner. (B, D) Thursday, May 24 Jerusalem We spend a full day in Jerusalem, focusing on sites connected with the final week of Jesus life. We begin outside the city walls at the Mount of Olives, descending on the road Jesus traveled on Palm Sunday. We will stop for times of reflection at the Dominus Flevit chapel ( The Lord Wept, Luke 19:37-42), the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu ( cock s crow ), which commemorates Peter s triple rejection of Jesus. We enter the ancient city near St. Anne s church, where the Pool of Bethesda (healing of the paralytic, John 5:1-15) reminds us of how Jesus can heal us physically. We next are reminded of how Jesus in his suffering, death and resurrection can heal us spiritually, as we follow the Good Friday steps of our Savior: we walk under the Arch of the Ecce Homo Church ( Behold the Man, John 19:5), and down the Via Dolorosa ( way of sorrows ) to the two places claiming to house his tomb: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Garden Tomb. Another study session and dinner conclude this amazing day. (B, D) Friday, May 25 Masada, Ein Gedi, Qumran, Dead Sea, Jerusalem Today involves two extraordinary sites located outside Jerusalem. We ll first drive to the most famous palace-fortress of Herod the Great: Masada. After reaching the summit by cable car, we

will see the large bathhouse, massive storehouse complex, synagogue, swimming pool, water cisterns, and, of course, Herod s palace, which is spread out over three terraces. Afterward, we enjoy a brief rest at the spring-fed oasis of Ein Gedi before proceeding to Qumran, the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered scrolls that are of the greatest importance for proving the reliability of the text of the Old Testament. We then return to Jerusalem, stopping briefly en route for impressive views of Wadi Quelt, the Judean Wilderness, and St. George s Monastery. We enjoy dinner and pack for our morning departure to Jordan. (B, D) Saturday, May 26 Border Crossing, Bethany Beyond the Jordan, Jerash, Amman Early this morning we ll travel to the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge to cross into Jordan and arrive in Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the most likely site where John the Baptist lived, preached, and baptized hundreds of followers, including Jesus. We ll have a sack lunch (picnic) on site and continue north to Jerash (Garasa), the best preserved Graeco-Roman city in the Middle East and a place referred to in the Bible as region of Gerasenes (Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26). The wellpreserved colonnaded streets, plazas, temples, theaters, paved pathways and numerous Byzantine churches make Jerash the second most popular historical destination for tourists after Petra. We ll then travel south to Amman (Philadelphia) to check in at the hotel and enjoy a delicious dinner. (B, L, D) Sunday, May 27 Mount Nebo, Madaba, Umm Al-Rasas, Petra We ll travel to Mount Nebo, where Moses before his death saw the Promised Land of Canaan (Deut. 32:48-52; 34:1-8) and where we ll enjoy a spectacular view of the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley. Continue to nearby Madaba to see the famous mosaic map located in St. George Orthodox Church the earliest religious map in any form to survive from antiquity and the Church of John the Baptist. We ll then visit the archaeological site of Umm Al-Rasas with its St. Stephen Church, which contains a mosaic with images of 27 Old and New Testament cities. We ll make a scenic stop near the fortress of Machaerus (Mukawir), yet another palacefortress of Herod the Great. Here Herod s son, Antipas, had John the Baptist imprisoned for two years and then beheaded after Salome s fateful dance (Matt. 14:1-12). Drive south to Petra to check in for a one-night stay, worship service, and dinner. (B, D) Monday, May 28 Petra, Amman Petra s marvelously preserved structures are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We ll begin at the Visitors Center and enter via the Siq (narrow ¾-mile canyon that serves as an entrance to the ancient city) to see such awe-dropping sites as the Treasury (actually the tomb of King Aretas IV of 2 Cor. 11:32), the Street of Façades, the theater, the Royal Temple, Petra Church, the Great Temple, Palace of the Pharaoh s Daughter, and (if you can do the 800-step climb) the impressive Monastery. We then return to Amman by way of the King s Highway, the world s oldest continuously used transportation route. A farewell dinner and final debriefing session are planned in Amman, giving us time to repack and rest for our journey home. (B, D) Tuesday, May 29 Return to the U.S. Early this morning, we ll transfer to the Queen Alia International Airport to check in for our flights, via a stopover in Frankfurt, to Chicago. Our trip following in the footsteps of Jesus has certainly been instructive, inspirational, and memorable! (Meals-in flight) Daily activities are subject to change due to local circumstances. Jerash Tiled map on the floor of St George Church, Madaba
