St. Mary Catholic Church, Coupeville You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 24, 2014 Second Collection Save the Chrisans of Iraq! The whole world has witnessed with incredulity what is now called The Restoration of the Caliphate (Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue). The Christians of Iraq, together with Shi ites and the Yezidi, are being forced to choose death or exile in those areas of Iraq under the control of the jihadist group Islamic State (ISIS). Their places of worship, convents, monasteries and cemeteries are being desecrated and destroyed; men crucified; women and girls abducted as the spoils of war ; priests and religious murdered. 5 Things You Can Do Now! Pray Use and reflect on the prayer provided by the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Iraq. Cards with this prayer are available in Harrington Hall. Fast and Sacrifice Follow the traditional Christian practice modeled by Jesus of joining your prayer with a fast or personal sacrifice. Pope Francis reminds us constantly of the power of prayer to change the world. Learn Keep on top of events through the Vatican news portal www.news.va, the Catholic News Service cns.org, and Catholic Relief Services emergencies.crs.org. Give Catholic Relief Services is working with Caritas Iraq to supply aid now and in the months ahead to the Iraqi refugees. Donate online at emergencies.crs.org. Contact our Polical Leaders Let them know that you want our nation to protect these threatened peoples against the violation of their human rights. The Arabic letter N is posted on the doors of our church to express our solidarity with our sister and brother Christians in Iraq. N, for Nazarene, meaning a Christian, is being painted on the doors of the houses of Christians by the jihadist group Islamic State, indicating that those living there must either convert to Islam, pay a huge fine, or be executed. St. Mary Religious Educa)on News Catechists are needed this year again! St. Mary Church certainly has the children to again have a Religious Educa)on program. But we can t make it happen without adults volunteering to be: 1) Catechists, 2) Assistant Catechists or 3) Subs)tute Catechists on a call list. We are required to have two adults in every room where there is a child. Therefore our need for Catechist Assistants is just as cri)cal as for the lead Catechist. Subs)tute Catechists are only called when a teacher or an aid can t make it: we can usually no)fy you several days to a few weeks ahead of )me. If you are on the list and called but you can t do it that specific date, that is okay. I will keep calling other names on the list. I am asking you to prayer about volunteering to work in this important field where you quite literally work as a disciple of Christ, bringing the Good News to our parish s youngsters. If you have already worked as a volunteer Catechist in prior years, I am asking you to seriously consider doing it again this year. For more informa)on, call or text me on my cell phone 514-451-3749. Thank you! Mary Rose Anderson, Religious Educaon Coordinator ********************************* Registra)on Forms will be available next week in the ves)bule and in Harrington Hall. There will be individual forms for both 1) registering your grade school Children and 2) registering your teens into St. Mary Religious Educa)on program this school year! The earlier you register the be;er idea we have for how many textbooks to order early, so every child will have his or her own textbook at the very start of classes. Note, if you can t pay right away, register now and pay some)me before classes start. There will again be a $5 discount for early bird registrants. Of course, scholarships for families in need will be given, so let Mary Rose know if you are in need of financial assistance. RE classes at St. Mary will start the first week in October, as in prior years. The RE Calendar of Dates for the young children s program classes will be available as soon as all the dates are confirmed. The same applies to the calendar of dates for the Teens program, which is led by Pat Marks and John Hartley.
