Temple Emanuel of Marlborough Chai Line January 2010 15 Tevet - 16 Sh'vat 5770.hha, yca -,cy Volume 11 Issue 6 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: From the Board School News Dates & Donations Sisterhood News Important Dates Calendar CANDLE LIGHTING TIMES SERVICES 1 2 3 4 6 7 Dear Congregants, At the end of this month, we will be celebrating the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shevat, known as the birthday of trees. In Israel, Tu BiShvat marks the beginning of the spring season. Often, we give money to the Jewish National Fund to support the planting of trees in Israel and we have a special seder where we eat many of the fruits from Israel. To the Jewish people, this concept of honoring trees carries a great deal of meaning. The tree denotes new life and strength. In fact we call our Torah, our holiest possession, Etz Chaim, which means the tree of life. Rabbi Solomon Ibn Gabirol once said, "the world is a tree and human beings are its fruit." This month, Temple Emanuel will be celebrating more than the holiday of Tu BiShvat. We will also be welcoming our new Rabbi, Tom Alpert, to our congregation. I think that it is very appropriate that he joins us at this particular season as, just as the tree brings us strength, I am very confident that, under Rabbi Tom's leadership, our temple will grow, flourish, and strengthen. Please join me in welcoming Rabbi Tom Alpert and his family to our temple community. "Bruchim Habaim" welcome. B'Shalom, Joan Perlman
Page 2 Volume 11 Issue 6 together. I hope that everyone enjoyed some holiday and school vacation time Although, I know that Kristine Kestenbaum has graciously volunteered to write about our school trip to New Horizon's, I would just like to share a couple of words as well. I am so proud of our students. They not only sang beautifully, but each student made a personal impact on the residents of New Horizon's that attended our Chanukah program. We have an open invitation to return based on the quality of programming and the student's maturity. Yasher Co-ach to each of you who did this Mitzvah of Kibud Zkenim, Honoring the elderly. Parent Teacher conference dates will soon arrive in your e-mail. They are scheduled for Sunday January 24, after Hebrew school ends. This is an opportunity to meet one on one with your child(ren)'s teachers to discuss progress. Meetings are scheduled for 10 minutes; additional time can be set up for another day, if necessary. Please schedule the extra time directly with the educator. IF YOU CAN NOT COME AT THE TIME SCHEDULED OR ON THIS DATE, PLEASE TRY TO SWITCH WITH ANOTHER FAMILY OR E-MAIL ME TO RESCHEDULE. We want to thank Arianna Herson and Elizabeth Fine for their unconditional assistance on Sundays this past semester. We welcome both Michael and Amy Aisenberg to work for the next few months. "Knei Lcha Chaver," find for yourself a study partner, from Ethics of our Father are words that define the partnership that our school assistants provide. Their work is indispensable. The children opened the festivities with songs, then met with individuals in the New Horizon's community to ask them some questions. They learned how others celebrated Hanukkah when they were young. The day ended with yummy desserts, hot chocolate, and a new found appreciation for the young and the old. A wonderful time was had by all! ~Kristine See you at Tefilah.
